Analysis

Eagles, as birds of prey, will sometimes kill crows as part of their natural diet. Crows, however, are known to harass and even attack eagles, particularly when defending their territory or nests. In these encounters, the eagle often responds by flying higher, taking advantage of the crow’s inability to breathe at higher altitudes, causing the crow to fall to its death. 

The crow falls to its own death, hurt by nothing more than its own actions turning inward.

Why Would A Crow Ride an Eagle?

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a….crow on the back of a Bald Eagle? The strange aerial encounter, caught on camera by bird photographer Phoo Chan about a year ago, is making the rounds online today, to the delight of many.

So what exactly is going on here? Was the crow just tired of flying, or was it intentionally trying to annoy its adversary?

It’s hard to tell, says Audubon field editor Kenn Kaufman. While it is not uncommon for smaller birds to harass larger birds that threaten their nesting territories, physically riding on their backs is an unusual tactic—and definitely an unusual sight.

Crows, along with other kinds of smaller birds such as Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and kingbirds, will not hesitate to defend their nests against eagles, hawks, vultures and Great Blue Herons if duty calls, especially during the nesting season, says Kaufman.

Typically when something like this happens “the eagle or other large bird being harassed will react in an aggressive way,” Kaufman says. Or, the larger bird will ignore its tormentor, “just as we might ignore a small dog yipping at our heels,” adds Kaufman—which very well may be what was happening in this photomontage.

Whether an innocent play-date or a moment of vindication, it is hard to deny Chan’s luck in capturing the remarkable occurrence on camera. The California-based photographer has plenty of experience capturing flying birds, so he must have been well-prepared.

In 2022 the feminism has grown to overwhelming proportions and society has raised men without dignity, self respect, respect for others that respect them, correction to those who do not respect them. Self Esteem – The foundation of a High Value Man

Self esteem is the foundation of all humans treatment of oneself and therefor will determine how life will turn out for them.  Not many are born with high self-esteem, many who have it since youth had it from a talent that was much greater than their peers. Mine was computer science in 1984 when I was 7 I won 1st place in Computer Science.  Back then it was an Apple IIc and the language was BASIC, just a blinking little cursor.  I wrote an adventure video game that many kids ended up enjoying while at Page School in Hancock Park, Ca. Year after year I took the trophy’s for being #1 with the NERD BOX as many called it back then. I also played sports, was a very avid baseball player.  I have many trophy’s for 1st & 2nd place in baseball back when WE HAD TO EARN THEM, participation awards did NOT EXIST! This achievements allowed my inner self to grow.  The schools were always fair and chose different Team captains, I was always chosen in the Top 3.  This subconscious observation formed my naturally take on leadership roles within my peer base.

Everyone is great at something, so great that others are not easily competing in that category.  The Lord, God gave us ALL TALENTS, many never search so many never find.  It is your job to your mental health, happiness and self esteem to dig deep for this search if your have not found YOUR TALENT.  Now I have guided many others into helping themselves through God and believing your can change.  Self Esteem and Good feelings come from our creator, he gives us all we need.  Fear is produced from evil, one who has NO TRUST in God will not have courage.  Getting rid of negative people around you, negative environments, haters, soul draining people need to be removed.  If they are family I understand its hard.  Find space fix your first! dealing with others insanity will be 100X easier when your do A LITTLE HOUSE CLEANING WITH YOURSELF!

Be good to you! seriously! treat your body and mind like you care! Exercise, eat right, abstain from negative substances that chemically alter your brain long after their use like drugs and alcohol.  Quiet time to search mentally and Exercise will help build good emotions and chemistry.  Prayer will increase this, quietly speaking to your creator in your mind in a quiet room brings enormous peace.  Like I said positive feelings are from our creator.  None of this works overnight so don’t expect this too. I am not selling this to you so understand it takes time and I am being honest!

Get over your past

We all got that past, all of us… Even judges DA’s priests, etc… We all have a past. Never let that be the reason you cannot change or rethink things.  If you knew half the path life threw at me you would not want these shoes. The self esteem story above was one of the highlights.  Everyone’s life has the less favorable happen to it.  I will tell you that once I was able to overcome my adversities I was able to build 2 very successful companies and I never have to worry about money.

I believe in God praying and little time outs to think good things is good for you! Spending my time taking care of my work and pets which keeps me mentally sharp and physically up and moving.  I exercise daily 300 pushups and eat organic food to absorb the most possible nutrients and least chemicals! A healthy body produces healthy chemistry, fights cancer, makes your body work better (men you know) and you can protect your family much easier being spiritually, mentally and physically in shape.

Especially in times of uncertainty. They are our rock in the hurricane.

He Is Assertive

He hides behind a facade of “honesty” and “getting things done”, but it’s just a cover-up for bullying.

He Has a Secure Attachment Style

When a man has a secure attachment style he is emotionally mature.

Men with a secure attachment style are comfortable with intimacy.
They are not afraid of loving, of opening up, and at the same time, they are not afraid of abandonment.

High-quality men know what’s fair and not fair, what’s friendly and what’s rude, and what they can take and what they will not take.

And they set and enforce their boundaries accordingly.

The high-quality man is not a too nice guy afraid of standing up for himself.
And when someone crosses his boundaries, he will let them know he’s not cool with it and that he has to insist on the limits he thinks are fair.

He will also do it with higher-ups, because he doesn’t take gratuitous meanness and disrespect, not even from a boss.
High-quality men know that disrespect is a slippery slope, and if you allow it to happen once, people lose respect for you and they will keep doing it.
They know it’s a risk, but their self-respect and their moral code is worth more than a job (plus high-quality men can usually get good jobs anyway).

At the upper echelons, high-quality men will also defend the boundaries of the people they care for and the people they take responsibility for.

And of course, needless to say, they demand fair behavior at home as well and they take no disrespect.
If their spouse cheats, she’s out.
And if she threatens to break up, they know how to handle it.

He Is Honest To His Own Value System

High-quality men don’t indiscriminately accept value systems from others.

There is no shortage of people telling men how they should behave these days:

• Religions
• Women
• Mom and dad
• MGTOW
• Red Pill
• This or that author…

High-value men listen attentively to them all.
But, ultimately, they build their own value system and have their own moral compass. That’s what they stick to.

There are many different value systems that can make a man high value. However, there are a few constraints.
Alpha male is different. You can be a piece of shit and be an alpha male. But you can’t be a piece of shit and be a high-value man.

For example, high-quality men:

• Don’t get into a relationship if they want to sleep around
• Don’t promise endless love if they don’t plan to stick around
• If they promise something, they will do their best to make it happen

And, if they get into a relationship and promise monogamy, they’ll try to stick with it (and demand the same back).

He Has A Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck in her seminal psychological research outlines two different approaches people have to skills and talent:

• Fixed mindset
• Growth mindset

Fixed Mindset people believe their qualities are set at birth and carved in stone.
You are who you are, and there isn’t much you can do about it.

People with a fixed mindset shy away from challenges because losing means “they’re bad” and that would hurt their ego.
These people are highly outcome dependent and when they fail, they make a lot of excuses because they feel the need to “cover up” their lack.

It’s difficult having open discussions and honest feedback with fixed mindset men because they are always guarded and take things very personally.

Growth Mindset people believe they can learn and grow.
They seek learning and growth opportunities because failing does not define them. On the contrary,  failing is the only way they can improve.

Men with a growth mindset move forward in their lives, are open to feedback and criticism, and are generally happier and more pleasant people to be around.

He Takes Responsibility

The locus of control is the degree to which people believe that they have -or don’t have- control over their life.

These are the two types of locus of control:

• Internal locus of control
• External locus of control

Internal locus of control means you believe you are in control of your life.
External locus of control means you believe life events determine the course of your life and you don’t have control over them.

The locus of control determines whether you feel like you’re at the helm of your life or like a castaway in a rudderless lifeboat.
And high-quality men feel like they are at the helm of their lives.

Taking responsibility starts with your own life first and foremost: you take responsibility for your current station in life, and for where you want to go.

Great leadership is an extension of this principle. Great leadership rests on responsibility and a sense of ownership. It’s the responsibility of taking care not just for oneself, but for those around, and the feeling that you can help your group with your leadership.

This is also the best, and healthier way to be a leader in your relationship, which in turn is the healthiest of also maintaining attraction and, as a side consequence, control.

An internal locus of control also shields you from superstitious BS. I remember a girlfriend of mine asking if “I really didn’t believe at all in the horoscope”.
She loved me much more when I told her that men like myself are incompatible with the horoscope. The horoscope tells you what’s going to happen to you. It tells you what your path is going to look like. So then what, you can just sit back and let it unfold? That’s inconceivable.
We don’t let anyone tell us what’s going to happen to us, because we, and we alone, are at the helm of our lives.

Become A High Value Man With Purpose

Be a gentleman – Not Overated

Being a gentleman means that you are respectful to women and never act in a way that is offensive or demeaning. This is an easy point to understand, but it doesn’t mean everyone will fully comprehend it because there are still people out there who think it is okay to treat women in the disrespectful way they did in the 1800s.If you want to become more attractive, you should certainly be a gentleman. 

Display high status symbols

In order to be a high value man, you need to show off some status symbols. This could be a nice car or some luxury items that people want.

You don’t have to go overboard with this, but there are certain things that are expected of you if you want to take on a high value role in people’s lives.

Work hard on your goals and targets

If you want to be high value, then you need to work hard in order to meet your goals.

Pay attention to your daily goals, but when you don’t meet them try to figure out why. There are usually a few things that can be worked on here and there.

Act like a leader

Leaders always have high status in their groups. Leaders aren’t very popular, but they always have high status because they work hard to get the job done. They aren’t afraid to make difficult decisions and they take responsibility for their actions. You should think of yourself as a leader who is willing to take risks to achieve your goals. Life-lovers have mastered the art of living in the moment and enjoying everything that comes their way. They don’t complain about anything and they take every opportunity that comes their way. You shouldn’t complain about anything either because that makes you low value and low status.

Know yourself inside and out

Know yourself as well as you can before you try to become a high value man. This will make it easier for you to act like a leader, take risks and control your life. The more in control, the better man you will be.

Dress for success

Dressing well is crucial to being a high value man. Dressing well shows that you are well put together and prepared for life’s many challenges. It’s important that you can expect people to take you seriously when you go out of your way to make sure that you look good.

Don’t complain about anything

Don’t complain about anything in public because it makes you look weak and low value. It also shows that you’re not confident in your abilities, which is a huge turnoff for a lot of people. The worst part about complaining is that it makes you look weak and irrational; two things that can’t be helped if you want to become high value.

Learn to analyze

People who are analytical can often see what is going on in the world in a very different way than the average person. If you analyze things and have the ability to take all of your observations and put it into action, then you will become a very successful man. This is true whether it is business or personal because if you understand how other people think and make decisions, then you will have an advantage over those that do not keep themselves updated with current events.

Being a man of the world means that you are willing to keep yourself informed about what is going on in the world. Being educated and connected to current events helps in several different ways. Before we can delve into any intimidation discussion, I think that we first need to describe the more common characteristics of a typical Sigma Male…

1. Sigma Males are Introverts. This must not be construed as some sort of a negative aspect. Sigmas are generally introverts because they realize that much of what is being discussed around them tends to be intellectual nonsense. Sigmas know that they have better things to do with their time than participate in social ‘OneUpManShip’.
2. Sigma Males are Self-Reliant. Sigmas refuse to be beholden to anyone. They rely on their own ingenuity to solve problems as they arise and don’t wait for an external someone to come along and save them. Because of this self-reliance and their insistence on finding the answer for themselves, Sigma Males are often thought not to be team players. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
   Sigma Males simply want to solve problems… not talk about them endlessly.
3. Sigma Males are Lone Wolves. This characteristic is probably the number one reason that Sigmas are considered so intimidating. Sigmas have no problem with alone time. The Sigma Male is a notorious planner. While others are trying to be the loudest in the room, the Sigma is quietly planning his next five moves. Hr will sit quietly in the conference room as others speak louder and louder and try to posture everyone into thinking that they know best. Sigmas are silently contemplating the issue on the table and working-out how to fix it.

Since the Sigma Male doesn’t try and take part in the discussion, everyone begins to think that “This guy thinks he’s better than us. That’s why he isn’t saying anything.”

Not true. The Sigma is simply calculating the steps needed to address the problem and sees endless posturing as a waste of hi time.

A Sigma Male simply cannot suffer fools.

They are extremely confident.

While alpha males are known for their extroverted confidence they make sure that everyone around them knows sigma males are often just as confident, but introvertedly. At first sight, they might not appear as the most confident people in the room.

This is because a sigma male does not need to display his dominance to feel better about himself. His self esteem does not come from social media, other people’s opinions, or approval. They are confident of who they are, and they have a clear picture of what they like and what they don’t like.

Sigma males are often just as confident as Alpha males, but in an introverted manner. Nothing is worse for a sigma male than a controlling individual. He will find it intolerable when someone tries to change his way of life. He prefers to complete tasks in his own order without worrying about other commitments or others’ desires.

Sigma Males Are Opinionated and Convincing

They Are More Rational Than Being Emotional

Most sigma males’ actions are led by reasons rather than emotion. They rely on their rational sense and instincts when solving problems.  Sigma males don’t allow personal sentiments to cloud their judgment. For every decision the sigma males make, they always gauge the effect of their actions.  Most times, sigma males can’t stand the Beta and Omega males. These guys are so ignorant in a world so full of information.  And once a sigma male realizes that you are insensitive and inconsiderate on issues that require careful analysis, he will start avoiding you.

They Don’t Allow Random People Into Their Lives

Generally, sigma males are careful of who they allow into their lives. They know that people can be inconsistent; they try to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s before they allow anybody into their lives.  The sigma males’ philosophy about friendship is that it’s better to stay alone and true than be surrounded by fake people.  Of course, the sigma males don’t need other people’s validation to become confident.  The lone wolves know who they are, what they are, and what they can do. So, they don’t give a damn about what people think of them.  Even though the sigma male is yet to figure out who he is, he doesn’t need anybody’s validation to tell him what he’s capable of doing.  Regardless of the rough path the sigma males pass through in life, they will eventually figure out who they are.  So, the lone wolves have a small circle of friends and are always happy with them.  When it comes to friendship, sigma males prefer to have a few loyal and reliable friends than having several people they can trust.

They Always Stick to Their Moral  

One of the sigma males’ intimidating traits is that they always stick to their morals.  Every sigma male knows what he stands for, and they don’t compromise their values and beliefs for any reason.  Once something doesn’t feel right, you can’t convince the sigma male to do it. And the lone wolves’ actions determine the actions they do and do not find acceptable from other people.  It doesn’t matter whether you are the sigma male’s boss or the most feared tyrant; once you step out of the line, he boldly tells you.

Sigma Males Are Not Attention Seekers

Sigma males don’t seek attention. They need their own space. However, their exceptional personality always attracts people to them.  Sigma males are not like Beta and Omega males who can go to any length just to get other people’s attention.  It’s quite funny how people are naturally drawn to the sigma males even when he tries not to be noticed.  Perhaps, it’s because the lone wolves genuinely seek what’s best for other people.  Funny enough, the socializing sigma males are engaged in is not directly driven by them. But by the people who are influenced by the lone wolf’s unique traits.

Sigma Males Don’t Live Their Lives to Please Other People

Sigma males don’t live their lives to impress or please people. They are not afraid to stay their true self.  The lone wolves don’t care whether they will ruffle a few feathers; they will always be themselves.  Well, what do you expect from a personality like the sigma males? They are confident and believe in themselves.  Irrespective of what happens, the sigma males never feel the need to go out of their way to please or impress people.  Of course, sigma males treat people around them with respect. But they never pander to other people’s egos just to get validation.  Even though the sigma males are passionate about being successful, they don’t achieve success at the expense of their self-esteem.  The lone wolves always show their true colors and are unapologetic about their actions.

Sigma Males are Goal Oriented

Sigma males are goal-oriented. They always focus on a particular goal and develop strategies to achieve these goals.  At all times, the sigma males maintain a clear vision. And for any reason, they don’t waver or believe that their dreams are not realistic. It doesn’t matter the challenges they encounter. The lone wolves know the steps they need to take to achieve their goals. And they are laser-focused on achieving their smaller and smarter goals to achieve their long-term goals.

Sigma Males Don’t Put up with Excuses

As we mentioned above, most of you will most likely put alpha males at the top of hierarchy.

And you most likely are correct.

However, that does not mean that a sigma male is beneath an alpha.

The major difference being that sigma males like to live their lives outside of the normal hierarchy structure.

They neither want to lead nor follow, but rather be on their own.

Even if a sigma male has all the abilities to lead, or to be the one in a social group of people that everyone admires, they prefer to be away from all of that.

A sigma male can walk alone, and be 100% comfortable doing his own thing, in his own way.

Another really interesting trait which is found amongst sigmas is that they never require validation by others.

This could be in the form of a new job title, or having a title within a community.

Many refer to sigmas as “lone wolves” or “lone wanderers”.

Just like the alpha, the sigma is seen in the eyes of others as someone with high status.

There are, however, a few noticeable and obvious differences between sigma and alpha males.

#1: Does Not Conform

We start off with definitely one of the big traits of all sigma males.

They do not like to conform, and do things the way they feel they should.

You won’t see a sigma following a leader, or being happily told what to do on a daily basis.

On top of that, sigmas don’t follow the crowd.

They actually often tend to go the other way, and make this decision solely based on their honest thoughts.

No outside pressures will affect a sigma’s decision.

They stay true to their own, internal values and beliefs.

Bottom line is, a sigma won’t go down a path or follow something because their friends or family are expecting that of them.

#2: Self Sufficient

Being self sufficient is one of the strongest traits found in any sigma.

Sigmas enjoy wandering off by themselves, often travelling the world or just being alone in strange places for weeks at a time.

They have the ability to adapt and feel really comfortable in any of these situations or environments.

No one feeds them.

No one gives them money.

They are their own men.

They submit to no one, and go out and get something whenever needed.

They truly are “lone wolves”, and I mean that in a high regard!

#3: Treat People Equally

Sigma males tend to get along with people from all different social levels.

They are genuine when engaging with other people, no matter how high or low the people are on the social ladder.

Whereas an alpha male wants to exert a form of dominance or get something out of someone, sigmas are happy to just treat people all as equals.

#4: Adaptable

This one goes hand in hand with being self sufficient.

When a sigma finds himself in a new, strange situation, he can quickly adapt and make himself comfortable.

Regardless of the company he finds himself in, he can easily go with the flow and be part of the conversation or situation.

An alpha differs in this situation.

He isn’t as comfortable being placed into any social situation, especially if it involves people that he may see as a threat.

So if a sigma finds himself at a table filled with various personalities, he can easily navigate his way around that.

And an alpha? Not so much.

#5: Comfortable Being Alone

Whilst the term “lone wolf” is often used to describe sigma males, it is often misunderstood.

A sigma is only a “lone wolf” to the degree that he is 100% comfortable with his own company, no matter where he is.

I actually think this is a skill more men need to learn.

Being alone and being completely comfortable whilst being alone is an awesome skill that really allows you and your mind a little down time.

#6: Self Aware

As sigmas have made the decision not to join the roles expected of them within a normal hierarchy, they have become a lot more self aware, and know what they want out of life.

Sigmas know what they are good at, what they are not good at, and what they want to do in life.

If they ever go wrong, they have the quick ability to self-correct.

This is due to their high level of self awareness.

#7: Small, Close Social Circles

Sigma males choose to rather have a really close circle of friends who they can trust 100%, instead of hanging out with larger crowds.

Usually, their friends see life the same way they do.

This has nothing to do with being anti social, rather they just prefer to have a select few set of friends.

#8: Don’t Seek Attention

Attention is never required for a sigma male.

Sigmas prefer to blend in, and often step into the background where they can rather observe and listen to any given situation.

#9: Not Driven By Outside Validation

Sigmas don’t strive for validation or getting a pat on the back.

This may be at their workplace, or just in life in general.

They do not want to be in the limelight.

In fact, you could go as far as saying that sigma males want to be invisible.

They don’t travel to other places across the globe to be able to brag about it.

This is definitely a predictable trait of a sigma male, especially considering the above information.

As sigmas prefer to stand back and listen and observe, they tend to be a bit more held back when speaking.

This isn’t due to the fact that they are shy or unsocial.

It’s more to do with the fact that they prefer to think deeply before speaking.

#11: Self Priority

This might come across as selfish to a certain degree, but it actually isn’t.

A sigma male has his own personal goals and objectives, and will work hard to achieve these goals.

Whereas an alpha also does have goals and objectives, he would often prioritize highly valued people of their social circle over themselves.

A sigma just wants to be left alone, and work on his dreams and aspirations.

They don’t care how they are perceived by others.

I recently read an article about women dating sigma men, and the jealousy topic was brought up.

In general, sigma males are not the jealous type.

This is down to the fact that they have faith in their decision making, and they too enjoy spending time alone.

A sigma male will give his partner space, as he too enjoys this same space.

The sigma is more introverted than the alpha male.

For me personally, there are two really big benefits that are clear.

#1: Freedom

Freedom is definitely the biggest benefit that comes from being a sigma.

When you don’t even care to pay attention to what other people think about you or the way you live your life, you definitely will feel a lot more freedom.

Both mentally, emotionally and probably physically too.

The sigma lives life on his own terms, and never bends to what others might have to say.

This is the ultimate freedom – going about life on your terms 100%.

As a sigma, you don’t live life based on what is expected of you.

You don’t keep up with the crowd. Nor do you follow the crowd in any way, shape or form.

And with this comes a high level of efficiency.

You get shit done.

And you get shit done quickly.

This is due to the fact that you are used to being your own captain, and trying to achieve anything you set your sights on.

Drawbacks Of Being A Sigma Male

Although there are a few benefits that come with being a sigma, there are also a few drawbacks.

You could probably imagine what some of these drawbacks might be, but for this article I want to focus on the main drawback of being a sigma male – you have no tribe, so it can get lonely.

Sigmas by definition do not need a tribe. They don’t have to be the leader of the pack. They are their own pack.

And this is great.

But it can also get lonely.

It’s kind of funny that the best thing about being a sigma and the worst thing is the same – you are a lone wolf.

But remember you can transition and create a tribe.

Just because you are a lone wolf today doesn’t mean it has to be like this for life.

Sometimes we need to live the sigma male lifestyle for a bit, though, in order to focus on what we want to achieve in life.

Can You Go From Alpha Male to Sigma Male?

I honestly do believe you can.

We are not ever supposed to constantly be the same man.

Time happens.

Things happen.

And people change.

I think I can speak from personal experience in saying that you can rather easily, without even knowing it, go from being more of an alpha male to a sigma male.

Up until a few years ago, I had many traits that would say I leant more towards being an alpha.

But I then started travelling and backpacking solo for about two years, and things started changing without me even noticing.

I started enjoying being alone more, I loved the peace and quiet, and my thoughts about my own life became more clear.

Ever since then, I have been on the path to becoming a sigma male.

Sigma males, like alphas, fight with power. Sigmas are generally self-employed and place a great value on tranquility and flexibility. They should operate alone since they are capable of managing their time and arranging themselves.

• They don’t look for approval

Extravagances aren’t necessary for Sigma males to feel fulfilled and accomplished. They realize that economic goods can’t replace self-worth; therefore they don’t strive to legitimize themselves with pricey items. So they operate whatever they want, dress whatever they want, and don’t follow the orders of the alphas.

• They are modest rulers

Sigma males are lone wolves who can transform into great leaders in the appropriate conditions. They are an inspiration to others because of their devotion and enthusiasm. High-ranking Sigmas are never arrogant or arrogant, which is why they are admired.

• They place a high value on their personal lives

Sigma males are particular about their habits, and nothing irritates them more than someone who is overbearing. They don’t live up to others’ expectations. Sigmas will only change if they genuinely want to.

What is a sigma male? (Sigma male definition)

A sigma male is a man within the socio sexual hierarchy who chooses to live his life outside of the normal social dominance hierarchy structures of society. Sigma males share many traits in common with the alpha archetype, though their tendency to walk outside of the lines of traditional social dominance hierarchies sets them apart and makes them different.

The archetypal sigma male is defined above all else by his tendency to forsake the traditional social dominance hierarchies of modern society.

These men walk a more solitary path. They’re sometimes called ‘lone wolves’ or ‘wanderers.’

The socio sexual hierarchy, originally attributed to Vox Day, is a system for describing how men and boys relate to one another and organize themselves into different archetypes.

These archetypes categorize men based on who they are, how they behave, what their inclinations are likely to be, and how they’re perceived by women in the sexual marketplace.

But today, we’re going to go beyond the sigma male meaning and answer the pressing question that likely landed you here:

Where Does the Sigma Male Fit on the Socio Sexual Hierarchy?

The exact role of the ‘Sigma Male’ archetype in modern socio sexual hierarchy is somewhat hotly debated. But for all intents and purposes, it describes a man who goes his own way—living as a lone wolf.

I’ve found that the term is often used in conjunction with MGTOW philosophy (men going their own way). Men who believe in the MGTOW movement tend to identify strongly with the sigma archetype.

They see the idea of walking away from social dominance hierarchies and becoming a lone wolf as synonymous with the MGTOW mandate of walking away from both women and a society which has been quote “destroyed by feminism” end quote (I didn’t say it—that’s just one perspective).

But despite the obvious ideological link between the sigma male archetype and MGTOW, that’s not the only filter through which to view the true identity of the sigma male.

To get a truly accurate view of exactly how a sigma fits into the modern socio sexual hierarchy, we need to pull the lens back and take a larger look at how the different male archetypes fit together.

What Motivates the Sigma Male?

If the alpha male is the king, and if he’s served by a court filled with beta males, then the sigma male is the traveling bard, storyteller, or wanderer who visits the king.

He may dine with the king. He may even hold the king’s favor. His exploits or successes, while not necessarily well known, may earn him respect and admiration.

He doesn’t take a wife. Instead, he sleeps with his pick of the most beautiful women from the king’s court and then leaves as quickly as he arrived to continue his journey.

For the sigma, the journey itself is the true goal. This is what he lives for.

Unlike the betas, he doesn’t lust for the king’s power or favor. In fact, he probably truly doesn’t care if the king likes or dislikes him—because those things are meaningless to him as a sigma.

He also frees himself from the trappings and challenges of trying to compete with the betas.

Why?

Because, once again, he just doesn’t care enough about the social dominance hierarchy to bother with trying to secure himself a place within it.

Sigma Male vs Alpha Male

Unlike the alpha king, the sigma has no reason to maintain a certain public appearance. He has no incentive to please the masses or to appease anyone else’s opinion.

Also unlike the alpha king, he has little interest in competing within the social dominance hierarchy to rise to the top of the social order.

The sigma male willingly forfeits the benefits of the alpha position.

He does this because he sees the benefits of the sigma archetype as superior when you filter them for costand value.

Unlike the alpha archetype, the sigma doesn’t have to play political games or run every thought process through a tribe mentality filter to produce the results he wants in life.

He’s as self-sufficient as men can get. Alphas are also self-sufficient—though part of their self-sufficiency comes from their investments into the social dominance hierarchies that they choose to be a part of.

Alpha males typically spend more resources building tribes and climbing through the hierarchies.

As a result, they reap the rewards of strong tribalconnections, tribal resources, and higher social status. 

The returns on these tribal investments are doubtlessly valuable. But the alpha also takes on a great deal of responsibility, stress, and effort in exchange for these benefits.

This is even documented among Chimpanzee tribes.

This talk may be about chimpanzees, but human alphas aren’t so different.

The sigma male shuns the social responsibilities of the alpha (at least in theory).

He sees the resource investments into the tribe as high-risk, low reward. The sigma also sees the delicate framework of the social dominance hierarchy as a fragile house of cards.

He chooses to walk away from it because he sees it as smarter and more self-sufficient than hedging his bets on what other unreliable humans may choose to do.

This is perhaps an oversimplification—but it serves to lay the groundwork for the basis of the sigma male archetype, and how it typically fits in with alpha and beta archetypes.

Personality Differences Between the Alpha and the Sigma

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that sigma males and alpha males also tend to have very different temperamentsand personality types. 

And these personality types definitely play into which archetype a man will gravitate toward.

For example—I’m an alpha male. But I intentionally choose this path because several of my strongest personality traits give me huge strengths in the alpha archetype arena.

For example:

• I’m highly extroverted
• I have a natural talent for reading people
• People energize me
• I have strong natural leadership skills
• I have high emotional intelligence
• I’m highly empathetic

If I were to walk away from the dominance hierarchy and go my own way as a sigma male, I would fail to maximize the returns on my most significant personality strengths.

Plus, since people energize me, I would probably be exhausted by the solitary life of the wandering sigma.

Sure, these personality traits could all help me as a sigma male. But in the end, after taking my personal strengths into account, it’s a far more valuable use of my natural talents and abilities to pursue the path of the alpha.

As an alpha male who exists at the top of several dominance hierarchies in my life, I would be forfeiting my biggest personality-type advantages by choosing to walk the path of the sigma male.

It’s important to understand that the sigma mentality, much like the alpha mentality, is a mentality that fits certain types of men very well.

If a man embodies some or all of the natural sigma traits as his dominant personality traits, then he would stand to gain the most from choosing to live his life according to the sigma male archetype.

Which do Women Prefer?

This is one of the first questions I usually hear when I talk about alpha and sigma archetypes.

The truth is that both types of men can do extremely well with the ladies—albeit for different reasons.

Alpha Male Advantages With Women

Alpha males have high status and power. These are benefits that sigma males are automatically going to struggle with because both of these benefits are closely tied to existing at or near the top of the social dominance hierarchy.

It’s no secret that women love men with high status and power.

The reasons for this are fairly obvious. But I believe that David M. Buss described it best in the following quote from his book The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating:

Evolution has favored women who prefer men who possess attributes that confer benefits and who dislike men who possess attributes that impose costs.

High status and power confer numerous benefits. And so, an alpha male who exists at the top of the social order is automatically at an advantage when it comes to attracting the attention of the highest value women in the tribe.

Sigma Male Advantages With Women

Sigmas bring a few of their own advantages to the table.

Foremost, sigmas are characterized by the mystery and fluidity of their solitary lives. But they’re also characterized by how they’re impossible to ‘tie down’into a normal relationship.

The unattainability of a prolonged and secure romantic relationship with a sigma male sets them apart from betas, and even from alphas to a certain extent.

And both of these attributes drive women crazy (in a good way).

In fact, Esther Perel describes the relationship between mystery and desire quite poetically in her book Mating In Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence. 

Love enjoys knowing everything about you; desire needs mystery. Love likes to shrink the distance that exists between me and you, while desire is energized by it. If intimacy grows through repetition and familiarity, eroticism is numbed by repetition. It thrives on the mysterious, the novel, and the unexpected.

When coaching men, I often talk about the importance of cultivating mystery when building connections and sexually escalating with women.

Some men really struggle with building mystery. It requires a certain level of quiet confidence that few men possess.

Alphas need to work a bit harder at this than sigma males do. Sigma males tend to cultivate it more naturally due to their off-the-beaten-path approach to life.

Another powerful advantage that sigma males have in the dating marketplace is that they don’t care about social hierarchy.

This gives them a ‘rebel’ type of vibe that many women find incredibly sexy.

One look at the character Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford in the Star Wars movies, will tell you exactly what I mean!

7 Traits of a Sigma Male

To fully understand the sigma male archetype, you need to closely examine the most predominant sigma male traits.

I feel like he does a pretty good job of describing some of the more predominant sigma traits.

With that being said, these 7 traits describe the most distinguishing personality features of men who fit into the sigma male archetype.

Let’s jump in and talk about them.

1. Non-Conformity

Above all else, the true sigma male is a nonconformist. He marches to the beat of his own drum.

If the crowds are following the path to the right, the sigma will tend to strike out on his own and go left. 

There are many reasons why this is the case. Firstly, it’s because Sigma males value different things than other men.

Almost every other archetype is going to place a priority on how a certain action or trend will affect their societal status.

But sigmas are an outlier on this front. They systematically rule out societal pressures and expectations as useless.

Their decisions are based purely on the intrinsic value of what they’re pursuing, rather than the extrinsic value placed upon something by society or the masses. 

2. Self-Sufficiency and Independence

The sigma male is perhaps the most self-sufficient of all the male archetypes.

It’s not uncommon for sigma males to wander or travel. They may not even own a house or an apartment. They may be just as comfortable with nothing but a backpack of essentials as they would be with a home of their own.

The reason for this is that sigmas are strong natural survivors.

Since sigmas are almost always ‘lone wolves,’ they quickly adapt to taking care of themselves.

They feed themselves. They earn their own money. They pay their own bills. They provide themselves with their own company, nurturing, companionship, and value in life.

If they want something, they go out and get it. If they need something, they find a way to acquire it on their own.

They call no other man ‘master,’ and they submit to no one.

3. They Don’t Need the Social Hierarchy to Thrive

To me, this is one of the most fascinating traits of the sigma.

Sigma males are definitely loners. But that doesn’t mean that they never spend time with other people.

They may work standard jobs. They may even spend time with friends, family, and/or dating partners.

All of these situations require a certain level of assimilation into their respective social dominance hierarchies—and the sigma male rises to the challenge in a truly effective fashion.

But make no mistake. He’s also capable of escaping reliance upon these hierarchies. 

In other words—he may go to work and do his work dutifully.

But he’s never dependent upon his boss, his co-workers, or the income to maintain his life or happiness.

If he grows tired of that specific workplace, walking away is easy for him.

Even if he’s well-liked and well-respected by the other members of those hierarchies, he naturally avoids entangling himself in such a way that walking away would be problematic for him.

This is the nature of the sigma male. He’s always ready, willing, and able to walk away and strike out on his own.

4. Adaptability

Sigma males are highly adaptable by nature.

In fact, sometimes their adaptability is so natural and convincing that they may give off the appearance of true assimilation into the hierarchy. 

For example—a sigma male who starts attending Catholic Church services may start to wear a crucifix, carry a rosary, and observe Catholic rites.

He may even attend events as regularly as any other member of the Church.

But don’t mistake this temporary social participation for permanent assimilation into the hierarchy.This is what makes the sigma different from the alpha.

The alpha male will be constantly aware of how his actions within the Church will affect his position at the top of the hierarchy, because his position within the hierarchy is valuable to him.

A sigma, on the other hand, rejects all notions of climbing the hierarchy. If he assimilates to any degree, it’s probably because he finds some measure of personal value in it—or because he wishes to share in the experience for his own enjoyment, fulfillment, or benefit.

You can also be sure that he’s fully capable of walking away from it without a second thought. And at some point, he probably will.

5. Self-Priority

The sigma male puts his own dreams and happiness over everyone and everything else.

This may sound similar to the ideology of the alpha—and to a point, it’s very similar. But there’s one profound difference.

Alpha males will alwaysprioritize highly valued members of their tribe over themselves.

For the alpha, tribal investments often take precedence over his own wants, needs, and desires. This is part of the sacrifice of being the alpha.

But sigma males reject the notion that tribal investments will lead to worthwhile benefits.

They’re also unconcerned with appearances, or how they’re perceived by others.

They don’t want anything to do with the tribe unless the tribe serves a rational, practical purpose for them in the short term.

You’re much more likely to find the sigma male alone in his apartment, working on his business or his goals.

He prioritizes these goals over everything else in life.

Even when he dates, he doesn’t date to take care of a woman or to enter into a ‘typical’ relationship.

He’s a free spirit. He dates for enjoyment, novelty, and new experiences—and because he’s a sexual being with sexual desires.

He’s perfectly willing to walk away from the relationship if it ever ceases to be worth the investment to him.

This is how the sigma male prioritizes himself at all times.

6. They Love to Be Alone Because Companionship Slows Them Down

Sigma males often see companionship as a hindrance to what they truly want in life.

Since they care very little about how others perceive them, human relationships are often tedious and meaningless to them.

For the sigma, it’s glaringly obvious that companionship also comes withbaggage.

It also tends to offer very little to no value to counterbalance this baggage.

Sure, sigmas may develop a few close, intimate friendships that truly enrich their lives. But aside from this, most humans aren’t going to be worth their time or effort.

Besides, traveling with companions is more expensive, requires more effort, and is less efficient.

Couple this with the fact that sigmasare naturally fast-moving when motivated, and you’ll quickly realize that most humans can’t keep up with them anyway.

I have one friend who is a sigma male. He’s very careful about how he spends his socialization time.

I message him about every two weeks to see if he wants to hang out. Last time I messaged him, this is how he responded:

“Hey Josh what’s up. Thank you for the invite, but I’m not ready to meet up just yet.”

He takes control of his social energy and uses it exactly as he wants to use it.

I respect it, and we have a very fruitful and rewarding friendship as a result.

7. They Don’t Need Attention and Strive to Be Invisible

This is perhaps the most often misunderstood sigma male trait.

Sigma males actually strive to be invisible. 

At work, they neither neednor desire recognition for their effort or performance.

They would much rather just be left alone to fulfill their duties in peace.

They don’t strive to be in the limelight. They don’t want people to look at them and think highly or poorly of them.

They don’t need their good deeds to be known or published. They don’t want a public image, and they don’t care if anyone recognizes them or not.

Why?

Because sigmas aren’t driven by outside validation or praise. 

They’re loners. The trappings of society and the praise of fellow humans hold little to no value for them.

They live the majority of their lives in their own mind. 

They don’t travel to other countries to brag about it to their friends. They’re just as likely to travel, return, and never mention it to anyone else. 

They don’t publish blog posts because they hope to become famous.

If they publish a blog post, it’s because they wanted to publish it for their own creative expression and enjoyment. 

Perhaps Most Importantly: Don’t Mistake the Sigma’s Rejection of Society as a Response to Being Hurt or Alienated

That is actually an omegatrait and isn’t to be confused with sigma behavior.

Sigmas don’t reject society because they were hurt and are now shunning themselves or feeling sorry for themselves.

Unlike omegas, sigmas have not given up on society out of frustration.

They reject society for one reason and one reason alone:

They never caredabout itin the first place.

Benefits of a Sigma Male Lifestyle

There are many benefits to walking the path of the sigma. Here are the 3 most compelling advantages of choosing to journey through life as a lone wolf.

Freedom

The main benefit of living the sigma male lifestyle is freedom. 

Releasing yourself from the burden of caring about what other people think of you gives you the inner power to live life unapologetically on your terms. 

This encapsulates many of the benefits of being a sigma—and is perhaps the number-one thing that true sigma men care about most.

Attraction

Women are drawn to the sigma male archetype for many reasons.

First off, sigma males are always willing to walk away.

This is a highly attractive trait to women because it shows that the man is confident and likes himself enough to be content with his own company.

This is a serious high-value marker and exists at the opposite end of the spectrum from unattractive traits like clinginess, neediness, and desperation.

Women are also intensely attracted to novelty and mystery—and the nomadic sigma male fits this stereotype perfectly.

Drawbacks of Being a Sigma Male

Unfortunately, as with every other archetype, sigma males do face some challenges.

They Don’t Have A Tribe

This is probably the number-one downside to being a sigma. And while it’s possible to mitigate this one with some forethought and planning, it’s stillimportant to note.

There are many benefits to being part of a tribe. Friendship, companionship, safety in numbers, having people to help you and take care of you when you’re sick, etc.

Walking away from the social dominance hierarchy certainly comes with some upsides. But the biggest downside is exactly the same as the biggest upside:

You’re alone. 

For this reason, some sigmas don’t see the lone wolf sigma male lifestyle as a lifelong pursuit.

These men pursue the ‘wanderer’s life’ as younger men, and then transition back into tribal living as they start to get older.

There are a lot of benefits to having a family, a community, a home base, and a support network. And while the dangers of being a lone-wolf are mostly minimized in our modern culture, they’re still present—and they’re still a factor.

Some Sigmas End Up Creating Their Own Dominance Hierarchies, And Become Their Own Version Of An ‘Alpha’

A perfect example of this is the man who works alone in his office or bedroom to build his business.

But once he has amassed his wealth, he may build a larger company and hire employees to help him.

He builds a team and a tribe—and in so doing, creates his own dominance hierarchy.

He doesn’t like following a leader as he can’t do things his way. So, he depends solely on himself to fulfill his desires. He also doesn’t need others to show him right and wrong. Even if things don’t follow the plan, he never approaches others.

2. He doesn’t let others control his life

The sigma man is the master of his own mind and he aims to keep it that way. He won’t commit to a lover or take on a big group’s responsibilities. He’s not tied down by things, so he can unfurl his wings and charge toward his goals without second thoughts.

He detaches himself from others which seems selfish. However, this only helps him in the long run to reach unimaginable heights of success.

3. He’s peace-loving

A sigma male loves peace and silence. So, he can’t afford to have any sort of drama in his life. For that, he tries to keep his circle as small as possible. He’s close to a handful of people only.

He understands that everyone is different and has unique perceptions. So, more people with varied views will definitely misunderstand each other and create drama.

To avoid unnecessary troubles, he gets close to as few people as possible.

4. He’s flexible

Alpha and beta males are pretty rigid. The alpha men never compromise and feel this sense of entitlement for being the best or the leader. They want to have everything their way.

On the other hand, beta men are just too lenient. Whenever there’s a clash of opinions, he always lets the other guy win. He never fights for himself and always gets the shorter side of the stick.

But sigma males know just what they need to do to work on a situation. They can be lenient and even fight for their demands and always maintain a balance.

5. He’s a friendly leader

Both sigma and alpha males are great leaders… but most people would like a sigma male leader more. The reason? Unlike alphas, he doesn’t expect others to follow his lead blindly.

He doesn’t abuse his power or treat others like puppets. He teaches others by practically setting examples. He doesn’t expect anyone to know everything and treats his team members kindly. Moreover, he doesn’t try to take others’ credit or hard work under his name.

After reading those, you might assume that a sigma male has no weakness. But let’s find the truth here…

Weaknesses

1. He’s a commitment-phobe

If you analyze the sigma male personality traits closely, you’ll notice that he’s emotionally unavailable. His guards are always up and he hardly lets others in his heart. He’s also not ready to settle down, commit to family or friends, or even trust others easily.

This leads to him being a commitment-phobe and having troubles in his relationships later on. Even if he falls in love, he might doubt his feelings. He’ll try to get away from others the moment he feels he’s slipping.

2. He’s socially awkward

A sigma male is an introvert and stays miles away from socializing. He doesn’t want any attention on himself at all. But at times, even they can’t ignore some situations and try to participate in small talk.

However, superficial conversation is just not his thing even if he tried. The lack of emotion in his replies and the straightforward dry conversation without flattery offend the other person. A sigma male faces many troubles due to poor social skills.

3. He might be alone forever

A sigma male can’t commit and is seldom ready to settle in romantic relationships. He’s picky and wants a serious connection when both he and his partner are ready for it. Moreover, he only has a handful of friends and doesn’t make new ones easily.

He’s bound to end up alone without a partner or a friend beside him in the later years. After all, it becomes harder to find a partner in the older years. On the other hand, his friends will become busy with their families. He’ll hardly have anyone around and might even suffer from it.

4. Luxury doesn’t motivate him

The spotlight, public appreciation, others’ validation, etc… doesn’t attract him. A sigma male has eccentric likes which others probably can’t offer or even think about.

It’s hard to motivate him with anything. In the workplace, his employers can’t make him work harder for their goals due to his lack of motivation. It can stunt his personal growth as nothing motivates him.

5. He can’t focus on one thing at once

Sigma males like adventures and one goal at once just don’t make it. So, they often try to have multiple goals in their lives. Even before one plan wraps up he fantasizes about other plans.

To add a hint of excitement and challenge, he’s ready to take up multiple goals. However, this might lead to major troubles if one or more plans don’t work out.

Pros and Cons of being a Sigma Male

Being a sigma male yourself brings you a lot of benefits. You’re one of the outstanding men around you and almost everyone wants to be like you. So, first, let’s know why they want to be like you

1. People never feel judged by you

When someone’s stuck in a negative situation, people always assume the worst about them. People of different races feel judged the most in these situations.

Are you happy with your life? It’s a loaded question, but it’s an important one. If you sit quietly with yourself and think about the ways that you are unhappy, you just might find that Epictetus is on to something here. When we think of control, it tends to conjure images that don’t necessarily coincide with our notions of freedom. However, the Stoics argue that the more control you have over the things you can control, the freer you really are.

Epictetus knows a think about what it means to be free, having spent much of his early life as a slave. Being free isn’t about not having any responsibilities, as a large segment of our culture might argue. When it comes to these Stoic quotes on control, though, take a leap and consider what it would mean to really apply this to your life. The next time you’re in a traffic jam and you’re going to be late, you might wonder to yourself “am I in control of this?”

Maybe you left later than you should have knowing what you know about your city’s rush hour. If that’s the case, you’ve learned a valuable lesson that you can use in the future. It’s simple: next time you’ll leave earlier.

Or, maybe you left plenty of time to accommodate traffic and the delay was pretty much entirely unforeseeable.

In either case, getting angry and honking your horn isn’t going to change the fact that you’re idling on the interstate. If you can learn how to accept that you aren’t in control of certain things, you can spend your time with a higher quality of thoughts and avoid the exhausting rage of pointless anger.

Maybe you actually realize while you’re waiting in traffic that it doesn’t matter that much if you’re five minutes late to your meeting. Or, maybe you’re able to appreciate some scenery out the window since you aren’t hurling forward at 70 mph. As legions of warriors and prisoners can attest, Stoicism is not grim resolve but a way to wrest happiness from adversity

We do this to our philosophies. We redraft their contours based on projected shadows, or give them a cartoonish shape like a caricaturist emphasising all the wrong features. This is how Buddhism becomes, in the popular imagination, a doctrine of passivity and even laziness, while Existentialism becomes synonymous with apathy and futile despair. Something similar has happened to Stoicism, which is considered – when considered at all – a philosophy of grim endurance, of carrying on rather than getting over, of tolerating rather than transcending life’s agonies and adversities.

No wonder it’s not more popular. No wonder the Stoic sage, in Western culture, has never obtained the popularity of the Zen master. Even though Stoicism is far more accessible, not only does it lack the exotic mystique of Eastern practice; it’s also regarded as a philosophy of merely breaking even while remaining determinedly impassive. What this attitude ignores is the promise proffered by Stoicism of lasting transcendence and imperturbable tranquility.

It ignores gratitude, too. This is part of the tranquility, because it’s what makes the tranquility possible. Stoicism is, as much as anything, a philosophy of gratitude – and a gratitude, moreover, rugged enough to endure anything. Philosophers who pine for supreme psychological liberation have often failed to realise that they belong to a confederacy that includes the Stoics. ‘According to nature you want to live?’ Friedrich Nietzsche taunts the Stoics in Beyond Good and Evil (1886):

O you noble Stoics, what deceptive words these are! Imagine a being like nature, wasteful beyond measure, indifferent beyond measure, without purposes and consideration, without mercy and justice, fertile and desolate and uncertain at the same time; imagine indifference itself as a power – how could you live according to this indifference? Living – is that not precisely wanting to be other than this nature? Is not living – estimating, preferring, being unjust, being limited, wanting to be different? And supposing your imperative ‘live according to nature’ meant at bottom as much as ‘live according to life’ – how could you not do that? Why make a principle of what you yourself are and must be?

This is pretty good, as denunciations of Stoicism go, seductive in its articulateness and energy, and therefore effective, however uninformed.

Which is why it’s so disheartening to see Nietzsche fly off the rails of sanity in the next two paragraphs, accusing the Stoics of trying to ‘impose’ their ‘morality… on nature’, of being ‘no longer able to see [nature] differently’ because of an ‘arrogant’ determination to ‘tyrannise’ nature as the Stoic has tyrannised himself. Then (in some of the least subtle psychological projection you’re ever likely to see, given what we know of Nietzsche’s mad drive for psychological supremacy), he accuses all of philosophy as being a ‘tyrannical drive’, ‘the most spiritual will to power’, to the ‘creation of the world’.

The truth is, indifference really is a power, selectively applied, and living in such a way is not only eminently possible, with a conscious adoption of certain attitudes, but facilitates a freer, more expansive, more adventurous mode of living. Joy and grief are still there, along with all the other emotions, but they are tempered – and, in their temperance, they are less tyrannical.

If we can’t always go to our philosophers for an understanding of Stoicism, then where can we go? One place to start is the Urban Dictionary. Check out what this crowdsourced online reference to slang gives as the definition of a ‘stoic’:

You’ve gotta love the way the author manages to make mention of a porch in there, because Stoicism has its root in the word stoa, which is the Greek name for what today we would call a porch. Actually, we’re more likely to call it a portico, but the ancient Stoics used it as a kind of porch, where they would hang out and talk about enlightenment and stuff. The Greek scholar Zeno is the founder, and the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius the most famous practitioner, while the Roman statesman Seneca is probably the most eloquent and entertaining. But the real hero of Stoicism, most Stoics agree, is the Greek philosopher Epictetus.

He’d been a slave, which gives his words a credibility that the other Stoics, for all the hardships they endured, can’t quite match. He spoke to his pupils, who later wrote down his words. These are the only words we know today as Epictetus’, consisting of two short works, the Enchiridion and the Discourses, along with some fragments. Among those whom Epictetus taught directly is Marcus Aurelius (another Stoic philosopher who did not necessarily expect to be read; his Meditations were written expressly for private benefit, as a kind of self-instruction).

Among those Epictetus has taught indirectly is a whole cast of the distinguished, in all fields of endeavour. One of these is the late US Navy Admiral James Stockdale. A prisoner of war in Vietnam for seven years during that conflict, he endured broken bones, starvation, solitary confinement, and all other manner of torture. His psychological companion through it all were the teachings of Epictetus, with which he had familiarised himself after graduating from college and joining the Navy, studying philosophy at Stanford University on the side. He kept those teachings close by in Vietnam, never letting them leave his mind even when things were at their most dire. Especially then. He knew what they were about, those lessons, and he came to know their application much better than anyone should have to.

Stockdale wrote a lot about Epictetus, in speeches and memoirs and essays, but if you want to travel light (and, really, what Stoic doesn’t?), the best thing you could take with you is a speech he gave at King’s College London in 1993, published as Courage Under Fire: Testing Epictetus’s Doctrines in a Laboratory of Human Behavior (1993). That subtitle is important. Epictetus once compared the philosopher’s lecture room to a hospital, from which the student should walk out in a little bit of pain. ‘If Epictetus’s lecture room was a hospital,’ Stockdale writes, ‘my prison was a laboratory – a laboratory of human behaviour. I chose to test his postulates against the demanding real-life challenges of my laboratory. And as you can tell, I think he passed with flying colours.’

‘You are unfortunate in my judgment, for you have never been unfortunate’

Stockdale rejected the false optimism proffered by Christianity, because he knew, from direct observation, that false hope is how you went insane in that prison. The Stoics themselves believed in gods, but ultimately those resistant to religious belief can take their Stoicism the way they take their Buddhism, even if they can’t buy into such concepts as karma or reincarnation. What the whole thing comes down to, distilled to its briefest essence, is making the choice that choice is really all we have, and that all else is not worth considering. ‘Who […] is the invincible human being?’ Epictetus once asked, before answering the question himself: ‘One who can be disconcerted by nothing that lies outside the sphere of choice.’

Any misfortune ‘that lies outside the sphere of choice’ should be considered an opportunity to strengthen our resolve, not an excuse to weaken it. This is one of the truly great mind-hacks ever devised, this willingness to convert adversity to opportunity, and it’s part of what Seneca was extolling when he wrote what he would say to one whose spirit has never been tempered or tested by hardship: ‘You are unfortunate in my judgment, for you have never been unfortunate. You have passed through life with no antagonist to face you; no one will know what you were capable of, not even you yourself.’ We do ourselves an immense favour when we consider adversity an opportunity to make this discovery – and, in the discovery, to enhance what we find there.

Another shrewdly resourceful Stoic mind-hack is what William B Irvine – in his book A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy­ (2009)– has given the name ‘negative visualisation’. By keeping the very worst that can happen in our heads constantly, the Stoics tell us, we immunise ourselves from the dangers of too much so-called ‘positive thinking’, a product of the mind that believes a realistic accounting of the world can lead only to despair. Only by envisioning the bad can we truly appreciate the good; gratitude does not arrive when we take things for granted. It’s precisely this gratitude that leaves us content to cede control of what the world has already removed from our control anyway.

How did we let something so eminently understandable become so grotesquely misunderstood? How did we forget that that dark passage is really the portal to transcendence?

Many will recognise in these principles the general shape and texture of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Indeed, Stoicism has been identified as a kind of proto-CBT. Albert Ellis, the US psychologist who founded an early form of CBT known as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) in 1955, had read the Stoics in his youth and used to prescribe to his patients Epictetus’s maxim that ‘People are disturbed not by things but by their view of things.’ ‘That’s actually the “cognitive model of emotion” in a nutshell,’ Donald Robertson tells me, and he should certainly know, as a therapist who in 2010 wrote a book on CBT with the subtitle ‘Stoic Philosophy as Rational and Cognitive Psychotherapy’.

This simplicity and accessibility ensure that Stoicism will never be properly embraced by those who prefer the abstracted and esoteric in their philosophies. In the novel A Man in Full (1998), Tom Wolfe gives Stoicism, with perfect plausibility, to a semi-literate prison inmate. This monologue of Conrad Hensley’s may be stilted, but there’s nothing at all suspect about the sentiment behind it. When asked if he is a Stoic, Conrad replies: ‘I’m just reading about it, but I wish there was somebody around today, somebody you could go to, the way students went to Epictetus. Today people think of Stoics – like, you know, like they’re people who grit their teeth and tolerate pain and suffering. What they are is, they’re serene and confident in the face of anything you can throw at them.’

Marcus Aurelius started each day telling himself: ‘I shall meet with meddling, ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious, and unsociable people’

Which leads us naturally to ask just what it was that was thrown at them. We’ve already noted that Epictetus had the whole slavery thing going on, so he checks out. So does Seneca, in spite of what many have asserted – most recently the UK classicist Mary Beard in an essay for the New York Review of Books that asks: ‘How Stoical Was Seneca?’ before providing a none-too-approving answer. What Beard’s well-informed and otherwise cogent essay fails to allow for is just how tough it must have been for Seneca – tubercular, exiled, and under the control of a sadistically murderous dictator – no matter what access he sometimes had to life’s luxuries. It was Seneca himself who said that ‘no one has condemned wisdom to poverty’, and only an Ancient Greek Cynic would try to deny this. Besides, Seneca would have been the first to tell you, as he told a correspondent in one of his letters: ‘I am not so shameless as to undertake to cure my fellow-men when I am ill myself. I am, however, discussing with you troubles which concern us both, and sharing the remedy with you, just as if we were lying ill in the same hospital.’

Marcus Aurelius lay ill in that hospital, too. As beneficiary of the privileges of emperor, he also endured the struggles and stresses of that very same position, plus a few more besides. I know better than to try to improve on the following accounting, provided in Irvine’s A Guide to the Good Life:

He was sick, possibly with an ulcer. His family life was a source of distress: his wife appears to have been unfaithful to him, and of the at least 14 children she bore him, only six survived. Added to this were the stresses that came with ruling an empire. During his reign, there were numerous frontier uprisings, and Marcus often went personally to oversee campaigns against upstart tribes. His own officials – most notably, Avidius Cassius, the governor of Syria – rebelled against him. His subordinates were insolent to him, which insolence he bore with ‘an unruffled temper’. Citizens told jokes at his expense and were not punished for doing so. During his reign, the empire also experienced plague, famine, and natural disasters such as the earthquake at Smyrna.

Ever the strategist, Marcus employed a trusty technique in confronting the days that comprised such a life, making a point to tell himself at the start of each one of them: ‘I shall meet with meddling, ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious, and unsociable people.’ He could have been different about it – he could have pretended things were just hunky-dory, especially on those days when they really were, or seemed to be. But how, then, would he have been prepared to angle both into the wind and away from it – adapting, always, to fate’s violently vexing vicissitudes? Where would that have left him when the weather changed? source

The point of philosophy is to become a better person, at least according to the Stoics. Perhaps this is why the Stoicism and the Stoics writings continue to play a vital role in religion, philosophy, psychology, and mental health. Their four virtues, among other aspects of Stoicism, were expanded from Socrates beginning around 300BCE and today form the foundation for our most popular psychotherapies, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

What is Stoicism?

Stoicism is an extension of Western Philosophy started by Socrates and continued with Plato and Aristotle. The founder of Stoicism, Zeno of Citium, did not study with Socrates or his students and was not trained as a philosopher, but rather lucked into philosophy after a terrible tragedy involving a sunken ship and the loss of all of his possessions off the shores of ancient Greece. Being broke and in a strange land, Zeno wandered into a bookstore and was introduced to Socrates and philosophy.

He was hooked and went on to read everything he could find on the topic of Socratic Philosophy. He began to share what he learned in stoas, which were long columned hallways open to the public. The term Stoicism, today referring to the restriction of emotions, derives from the term stoa – it originally referred to teachings that occurred in the stoa (hallway lectures).

Stoicism is not really about restricting emotions, but rather about the importance of rational thinking. After reading much about Socrates, Zeno concluded that “The purpose of life is happiness, which is achieved by virtue, living according to the dictates of reason, ethical and philosophical training, self-reflection, careful judgements and inner calm.” He didn’t see happiness as only for the wealthy, or educated, or privileged, but rather for all humans.

Zeno was not only the father of Stoicism, he was also a proponent of social justice. As he shared his wisdom in the halls of Ancient Athens, he charged no fees and had no restrictions on who could attend and participate. Perhaps this is why the three most prolific Stoic writers included such diversity as a slave named Epictetus; a playwright and counselor to the infamous Nero named Seneca the Younger; and Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, often referred to as ‘the last of the five great emperors.’ It is important to note that much of the Stoic writings were destroyed when Sparta took over as the government of Athens during the Peloponnesian War yet the diversity of philosophers is still very broad.

The Four Virtues and Modern Psychology

I wrote an article on Positive Psychology titled “Character Strengths and the Virtuous Life” where I defined virtue as “living the life that best suits who you are – your character.” Since Positive Psychology identifies six virtues, four of which are the same as the Stoics. Martin Seligman, a co-founder of Positive Psychology, like the Stoic Philosophers, see virtue as both necessary and sufficient for happiness. Others, like Aristotle, disagree. But that’s for another post.

For Stoics, including Zeno of Citium, living a virtuous life is the key to happiness. Virtue is living a life that maximizes wisdom, courage, moderation (or temperance), and courage as it fits with who you are and what you value (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). A virtuous life is about being rational and enjoying positive emotions, eliminating negative emotions, and being true to who you are as a person.

The Stoics spoke of four virtues – wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. These virtues are seen across many western philosophies, including Christianity, and stem from the writings of Plato when he wrote that a ‘good city’ must be ‘wise, brave, temperate, and just.‘ (Kelly, 2022). These four virtues have stood the test of time. The vices, include foolishness (the enemy of wisdom), cowardice (the enemy of courage), intemperance (the enemy of temperance), and injustice (the enemy of justice), cowardice, intemperance. Virtue and vice are opposites on a spectrum between good and evil, positive and negative, or healthy and unhealthy.

Wisdom

Since the term ‘philosophy’ literally translates to ‘love of wisdom,’ let’s start with that one. Wisdom, to the Stoics, was not about the acquisition of knowledge, but rather the ability to differentiate what is important and under your control and what is indifferent – the Stoic term for anything that does not or should not impact your ability to experience a happy life (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). A wise person, then, is one who understand what is important for them at that moment from a rational perspective, considering emotions but not allowing them to drive any decisions or actions.

The Serenity Prayer is common across 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and emphasizes the importance of virtue, especially wisdom and courage. It goes like this: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Wisdom is about knowing how we impact our world and how the world impacts us (Kelly, 2022).

Courage

Epictetus, one of the most prolific of the Stoics, was once asked how to thrive and he responded with two simple words – persist and resist (Daily Stoic). He likened human existence to a military campaign, arguing that each of us is assigned a key post and to thrive we must hold our ground and prevent the enemy from encroaching. Courage, according to the Stoics, is about the strength to stand up to adversity by maintaining your values and living according to your virtues. A key to surviving and thriving is also resisting temptations that lead you away from your ideal self. To have courage means to persist and to resist.

Like the chess board metaphor in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, the goal in life is not to continually reposition yourself as your surroundings change or to constantly battle with yourself, but rather to discover your ideal self and maintain that as unmovable. The chess board represents your values while the chess pieces represent your thoughts, beliefs, ideas, emotions, and other contently changing and evolving aspects of yourself. If you focus on how to position your pieces, on which thoughts are good and which are bad, and what you can sacrifice to gain an better advantage or to counter the negative, you lose track of who you are. You are the chess board – identify your virtues , your values, the best in you and then hold steady – persist and resist.

Temperance

In his journal, Meditations, Marcus Aurelius wrote “if you seek tranquility, do less….do less, better. Because most of what we say and do is not essential” (2002, 4.24).  The idea behind Temperance – sometimes referred to as Moderation – is to find balance. According to Seneca the Younger, counselor to Nero, wealth should be no less than what is essential and no more than what is enough. Stoics believed in the idea of ‘all things in moderation,’ and argued that anything in excess counters virtue and deprives one of their best life.

Researchers and clinicians in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy warns us about the dangers of intemperance. In Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Therapy (CT), cognitive distortions like catastrophizing (assuming the worst) and  all-or-none or polarized thinking (seeing only extremes) are often to blame for worsening depression and anxiety. It is similar for Albert Ellis’ Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) where the tendency to overuse extremes of thought like ‘shoulds’ and ‘musts’ tend to minimize the positive and amplify the negative (mentalhelp.net) resulting in symptoms of both depression and anxiety.

Justice

Marcus Aurelius argued that the Virtue of Justice was the most important virtue that ties all of the virtues together. He asked the point of being courageous if not for other people and the good of wisdom if it is not used to improve the world. Just as Zeno of Cyprus shared his knowledge and wisdom with anyone who wanted to listen at no charge and in public stoa, the Stoics believed that everyone was entitled to live their best life and this included open access to modern ideas. Justice includes the idea of sympatheia – that we are all interdependent; that the entire universe in interconnected – which is emphasized throughout the Stoic writings (Daily Stoic).

Stoicism and Mental Health

It is difficult to argue with Plato on the importance of being wise, brave, temperate, and just. These four virtues apply to us as individuals, as families, and as communities. Stoics believed in the interconnectedness of everyone and everything. Marcus Aurelius eloquently stated, “what hurts the hive, hurts the bee.” The counter is also true, what hurts the bee, hurts the hive. According to the Stoics, thriving means living your life according to virtue. Virtue represents who you are, what you value, and how you act.

Carl Rogers, the founder of Person-Centered Therapy, taught us that therapeutic change occurs when we establish genuine relationships that include positive regard and empathy. Like other humanists/existentialists, he also believed that mental health is about minimizing the overlap between who you are in reality and who you want to be. Living a virtuous life is about moving toward your ideal or authentic self.

The Sigma Male: An In-Depth Look into the Unique and Resilient Nature of the Lone Wolf

Sigma males are rare and unusual individuals with a unique way of thinking, making them a challenge for most people to understand. However, some people mistakenly believe that because Sigma males tend to be quiet and reserved on the outside, they are easy to control or exploit. But nothing could be further from the truth. 6. They are fiercely motivated: Sigma males have a fierce motivation and don’t make goals at random. They create realistic goals for themselves and are not easily influenced from the path they have decided to forge for themselves.

Sigma males don’t put up with any form of disrespect, their inner strength is a force to be reckoned with. Even though they may come across as quiet and pleasant on the exterior, when they feel someone is messing with them, they can be shockingly assertive in how plainly and honestly they express their opinions. They always have well-developed arguments and one of the major strengths of Sigma males in life is their high level of intelligence. It is certainly a Fool’s errand to attempt to outsmart a Sigma male because they thoroughly consider everything they say and do.
