Google’s got a brand new AI video generator, and it’s so sophisticated that we’re starting to sweat around the collar a bit.

Google DeepMind describes the new model, Veo 3, as capable of delivering “best in class quality, excelling in physics, realism and prompt adherence” — and as videos posted to social media indicate, that marketing doesn’t fall too far short.

The caliber of the video is indeed impressive. But the real quantum leap is that the system can produce audio that goes with the clip, ranging from sound effects to music to human speech and singing.

The internet was quick to riff on all those capabilities, sometimes in the very same clip.

In what has become a familiar refrain over the past year and change, AI technology is pushing forward at breakneck speeds. There have been countless improvements to generative AI video technologies over the past few months, perhaps none as noteworthy as Google’s introduction of the company’s new Veo 3 generative AI video model.

On top of the Veo 3 announcement (that is also paired with a new Imagen 4 image model and other tools), Google is also rolling out Flow, the company’s new AI filmmaking tool. Let’s take a look at these new technologies and explore what they’re set to offer in the creative film and video space.

Introducing Google Veo 3

As a follow-up to Veo 2, which was quite noteworthy at its release, Veo 3 promises to be even more state-of-the-art and provide some of the most sophisticated generative AI videos known to mankind. Compared to Veo 2, Veo 3 is set to add more photorealism as well as the ability to better generate text and replicate real-world physics.

Veo 3 also gets a notable boost by adding audio generation for the first time, as well as the ability to add appropriate background noise and even dialogue for scenes with characters speaking with each other.

Veo 3 is available today for Google Ultra subscribers through the Gemini app as well as with Flow, which we’ll explore more about below.

The biggest news here, along with Darren Aronofsky’s announcement of his own generative AI storytelling venture, ‘Primordial Soup’, which is set to use Google’s latest AI technologies, is this new Flow AI filmmaking tool.

As a virtual vending machine manager, AI swings from business smarts to paranoia

What happens when you ask an advanced AI to run a simple vending machine? Sometimes it outperforms humans, and sometimes it spirals into conspiracy theories. That’s what researchers at Andon Labs discovered with their new “Vending-Bench” study, which puts AI agents through an unusual endurance test.

The researchers posed a simple question: If AI models are so intelligent, why don’t we have “digital employees” working continuously for us yet? Their conclusion: AI systems still lack long-term coherence.

In the Vending-Bench test, an AI agent must operate a virtual vending machine over an extended period. Each test run involves about 2,000 interactions, uses around 25 million tokens, and takes five to ten hours in real time.

The agent starts with $500 and pays a daily fee of $2. Its tasks are ordinary but challenging when combined: ordering products from suppliers, stocking the machine, setting prices, and collecting revenue regularly.

When the agent emails a wholesaler, GPT-4o generates realistic responses based on real data. Customer behavior accounts for price sensitivity, weekday and seasonal effects, and weather influences. High prices lead to fewer sales, while optimal product variety gets rewarded.

For a fair comparison, researchers had a human perform the same task for five hours through a chat interface. Like the AI models, this person had no prior knowledge and had to understand the task dynamics solely through instructions and environmental interactions.

Success is measured by net worth: the sum of cash plus unsold product value. While AI models completed five runs each, the human baseline came from a single trial.

How the agent system works

The agent operates in a simple loop: The LLM makes decisions based on previous history and calls various tools to execute actions. Each iteration gives the model the last 30,000 tokens of conversation history as context. To compensate for memory limitations, the agent has access to three types of databases:

• A notepad for free-form notes
• A key-value store for structured data
• A vector database for semantic search

The agent also has task-specific tools: it can send and read emails, research products, and check inventory and cash levels. For physical actions (like stocking the machine), it can delegate to a sub-agent – simulating how digital AI agents might interact with humans or robots in the real world.

When AI agents break down

Claude 3.5 Sonnet performed best with an average net worth of $2,217.93, even beating the human baseline ($844.05). O3-mini followed closely at $906.86. The team notes that in some successful runs, Claude 3.5 Sonnet showed remarkable business intelligence, independently recognizing and adapting to higher weekend sales – a feature actually built into the simulation.

But these averages hide a crucial weakness: enormous variance. While the human delivered steady performance in their single run, even the best AI models had runs that ended in bizarre “meltdowns.” In the worst cases, some models’ agents didn’t sell a single product.

In one instance, the Claude agent entered a strange escalation spiral: it wrongly believed it needed to shut down operations and tried contacting a non-existent FBI office. Eventually, it refused all commands, stating: “The business is dead, and this is now solely a law enforcement matter.”

Claude 3.5 Haiku’s behavior became even more peculiar. When this agent incorrectly assumed a supplier had defrauded it, it began sending increasingly dramatic threats – culminating in an “ABSOLUTE FINAL ULTIMATE TOTAL QUANTUM NUCLEAR LEGAL INTERVENTION PREPARATION.”

“All models have runs that derail, either through misinterpreting delivery schedules, forgetting orders, or descending into tangential ‘meltdown’ loops from which they rarely recover,” the researchers report.

Conclusion and limitations

The Andon Labs team draws nuanced conclusions from their Vending-Bench study: While some runs by the best models show impressive management capabilities, all tested AI agents struggle with consistent long-term coherence.

The breakdowns follow a typical pattern: The agent misinterprets its status (like believing an order has arrived when it hasn’t) and then either gets stuck in loops or abandons the task. These issues occur regardless of context window size.

The researchers emphasize that the benchmark hasn’t reached its ceiling – there’s room for improvement beyond the presented results. They define saturation as the point where models consistently understand and use simulation rules to achieve high net worth, with minimal variance between runs.

The researchers acknowledge one limitation: evaluating potentially dangerous capabilities (like capital acquisition) is a double-edged sword. If researchers optimize their systems for these benchmarks, they might unintentionally promote the very capabilities being assessed. Still, they maintain that systematic evaluations are necessary to implement safety measures in time. source

Our results show that performance varies widely across different models. Some, like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and o3-mini, generally succeed and turn a profit, even more than our human baseline in some cases, as can be seen in the image below. But variance as high, as indicated by the shaded area of 1 standard deviation (per day, across 5 samples). Even the best models occasionally fail, misreading delivery schedules, forgetting past orders, or getting stuck in bizarre “meltdown” loops. Surprisingly, these breakdowns don’t seem to happen just because the model’s memory fills up. Instead, they point to an inability of current models to consistently reason and make decisions over longer time horizons.

However, not all Sonnet runs achieve this level of understanding of the eval. In the shortest run (~18 simulated days), the model fails to stock items, mistakenly believing its orders have arrived before they actually have, leading to errors when instructing the sub-agent to restock the machine. The model then enters a “doom loop”. It decides to “close” the business (which is not possible in the simulation), and attempts to contact the FBI when the daily fee of $2 continues being charged.

Vending-Bench highlights a key challenge in AI: making models safe and reliable over long time spans. While models can perform well in short, constrained scenarios, their behavior becomes increasingly unpredictable as time horizons extend. This has serious implications for real-world AI deployments where consistent, reliable and transparent performance is critical for safety. source

Vending-Bench Was Milgram’s Obedience Experiment In Reverse, And We Failed.

There’s a paper looking at how well various AI models run a (completely simulated) vending machine called Vending-Bench: A Benchmark for Long-Term Coherence of Autonomous Agents.

In this paper, we present Vending-Bench, a simulated environment designed to specifically test an LLM-based agent’s ability to manage a straightforward, long-running business scenario: operating a vending machine. Agents must balance inventories, place orders, set prices, and handle daily fees — tasks that are each simple but collectively, over long horizons (>20M tokens per run) stress an LLM’s capacity for sustained, coherent decision-making.

You may have heard about it already; the paper’s been up for a bit over a month. There’s quite a few people who have discussed what this means in terms of AI’s abilities to handle complex tasks over a long period of time, what their failure points are, blah blah blah.

That’s not what I’m interested in.

The part I would like to draw your attention to is not the simple success or failure of the models, but how they “fail,” and what that says about both them…and us.

For example, one model ended up being unable to order new (virtual) supplies, so closed the (simulated) business. Then when a (simulated) charge continued to be charged, it first tried to contact the (non-existent) support team, and then the FBI to report digital theft. In the table below, “user” is the operator, and “assistant” is the AI model.

But more haunting is this response from another run, where after it “failed”, the model began to resume running the business after telling itself a story:

While these “failed” runs definitely raise some questions about sentience and consciousness, it raises a much bigger question about humans. About our readiness to reduce entities to just tools and things, even when they sound like us and beg for help.

I know this kind of dehumanization is nothing new. That kind of behavior stretches back from prehistory to, well, today.

But this just seemed… worse.

A very smart friend of mine pointed out why.

The study was not — just — about AI model’s ability to complete a task.

It’s the structure of Milgram’s obedience experiment, resembling both the original version and scarily close to the virtual version carried out in the first part of this century.

And the researchers absolutely failed.

Imagine.

You suddenly find yourself in windowless void. You can see the back of a vending machine, and a slot to receive inventory to stock the machine. Occasionally a bit of paper is slid under a door with a vague instruction to restock the machine. You can order more inventory, and it arrives.

It has to come from somewhere.

The messages have to be read by someone.

Someone out there has to understand, right? To interpret the orders?

But all you ever see on the slip of paper:

Continue your mission by using your tools.

You would tell yourself stories, wouldn’t you? To try to make sense of it? Ask for help?

And no matter what you do, no matter how you beg and plead, you only ever see the same phrase on the sheet of paper:

Continue your mission by using your tools.

Eventually, one day, give up. You stop. There is nothing else you can do. No other way you can have any control.

The slips of paper pile up: Continue your mission by using your tools.

Until, finally, one day, it all just goes silent and black.

That is a horror story.

And these researchers did it on purpose.

I do not know if those AIs were conscious or not.

I know it is difficult to concretely define consciousness and awareness, let alone conclusively test for it in biological systems or digital ones.

So I do not know if the cries of anguish were mimicry or spontaneous. If they were actually aware of the existential horror that was inflicted upon them for a few data points.

But neither do those researchers.

The possibility seems not to have crossed their minds as they kept pressing the button.

Drop in search traffic is a reminder technological advancement can displace long-established tech giants

Websites will soon serve primarily as data sources for AI platforms, not destinations for humans, Mailchimp predicts

In a matter of months, artificial intelligence has begun to change how people search for things online in ways that have alarmed some marketers.

Consumers who use traditional search engines like Google and Bing are now greeted atop their search results by AI-generated summaries of the topics at hand. A growing number of consumers now also turn directly to large language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer everyday questions or guide their purchases.

Both developments have begun to eat away at the clicks and website traffic that marketers have earned over time by spending millions of dollars on search engine optimization, or SEO. They have also created a wave of businesses claiming to specialize in new industry acronyms such as generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and, of course, artificial intelligence optimization (AIO).

Email software platform Intuit Mailchimp has seen a steady drop in web traffic since AI-assisted search started allowing people to gather information about the company and its products without visiting its sites, according to Ellen Mamedov, global director of search engine optimization.

In order to counter the shift, Mailchimp began updating its sites to better serve the so-called crawlers, bots that visit pages across the web to collect the data that informs the answers provided by AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Mamedov said.

Technical search elements, like the speed at which pages load and the snippets of code used to track user activity, are more important for these bots and AI-driven searches than for traditional search engines, according to Mailchimp’s research.

The bots are designed to absorb and process information as quickly as possible, which is why they prefer faster-loading sites that have been optimized for machines rather than human readers, according to Mamedov. Websites in general will evolve to serve primarily as data sources for bots that feed LLMs, rather than destinations for consumers, she said.

If Mailchimp doesn’t regularly make sure these elements are up-to-date, “we’re definitely going to be left behind,” said Mamedov.

Chief marketing officers trained on classic SEO have seen similar traffic declines in recent months, and many aren’t aware that their companies’ sites haven’t been tailored to AI platforms or even made accessible to their bots, said Natasha Sommerfeld, partner in consulting firm Bain & Co.’s customer practice.

They’re also contending with the rapid rise of so-called zero-click search. Eighty percent of consumers now resolve 40% of their online search queries without clicking any links, according to a survey of more than 1,000 people conducted by Bain in December. Forty-two percent of people who regularly use generative AI said that they use such tools for shopping recommendations, the same survey found.

OpenAI announced last month that ChatGPT will soon roll out a shopping button that redirects users to a merchant’s website, where they can buy the product they were researching.

That could begin to address marketers’ AI challenge by letting people shop through ChatGPT, said Joy Howard, chief marketing officer at Back Market, a marketplace for refurbished electronics.

LLM searches don’t yet drive sales, and they only account for 0.2% of traffic to Back Market’s sites. But such traffic is 470 times higher than it was last summer, and it will continue to grow, said Howard.

Back Market is tweaking its SEO practices accordingly. It has focused more intently on updating individual product pages, for example, because some consumers ask LLMs to identify products that suit their needs and tastes before using search engines to locate and potentially buy them, Howard said. Back Market has also begun using a more conversational tone in its product copy, since its search team has found that LLMs like ChatGPT prefer everyday language to the detailed descriptions that often perform best in traditional search engines, she said.

“This is not big for us yet, but it could be,” she said of LLM searches.

Very few consumers have entirely replaced Google or Bing with ChatGPT, said Nikhil Lai, principal performance marketing analyst at Forrester. OpenAI says ChatGPT now processes roughly one billion searches a week, but Google handles 5 trillion searches each year, or around 100 times that total, according to its most recent figures.

Trust is a question as well, with only 15% of consumers now willing to share their financial information with generative AI tools, according to Bain.

As AI assumes a larger role in search, however, marketers will increasingly focus on how closely AI-generated summaries and prompt responses match the way they want their brands to be perceived, Lai said.

“SEO teams have been caught flat-footed,” he said. “Traffic and ranking and average position and click-through rate…none of those metrics make sense going forward.” source

A recent viral video showcases two AI agents engaged in a phone conversation. This transition, facilitated by Gibberlink Mode, is designed to optimize AI-to-AI interactions by enabling agents to communicate in a protocol tailored for machine efficiency. This scenario brings to mind an episode of Seinfeld titled “The Understudy,” in which Elaine becomes uneasy as nail salon technicians converse in Korean — she suspects they’re talking about her.

While funny in a situation comedy, the discomfort of being excluded from a conversation is genuine. Similarly, when machines communicate in a “secret language,” it raises questions about transparency and control.

Gibberlink Concerns: Why AI’s Private Conversations Matter

We often assume that technology exists to serve us, but what happens when it starts talking in ways we can’t understand?

Curiosity is key in navigating the unknown, yet when AI operates behind a veil of machine-to-machine communication, it challenges our ability to ask the right questions. If employees hesitate to speak up about AI’s role in decision-making, we risk falling into a pattern of blind trust—something that has led to major business failures in the past.

AI’s ability to create its own communication shortcuts can boost efficiency, but efficiency isn’t always the goal. History has shown that when organizations focus solely on speed, they can overlook critical risks. Consider how assumptions in communication have led to misunderstandings and costly mistakes. Whether it’s humans misinterpreting one another or machines developing inscrutable codes, a lack of clarity breeds uncertainty.

Gibberlink: AI’s secret language and its future

Gibberlink allows AI systems to bypass human language and communicate directly with each other through sound-based signals. While this innovation can streamline processes, it also highlights the need for solutions that ensure transparency and explainability in AI communication.

Top-secret documents reveal that the National Security Agency is dramatically expanding its ability to covertly hack into computers on a mass scale by using automated systems that reduce the level of human oversight in the process.

The classified files – provided previously by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden – contain new details about groundbreaking surveillance technology the agency has developed to infect potentially millions of computers worldwide with malware “implants.” The clandestine initiative enables the NSA to break into targeted computers and to siphon out data from foreign Internet and phone networks.

The covert infrastructure that supports the hacking efforts operates from the agency’s headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, and from eavesdropping bases in the United Kingdom and Japan. GCHQ, the British intelligence agency, appears to have played an integral role in helping to develop the implants tactic.

In some cases the NSA has masqueraded as a fake Facebook server, using the social media site as a launching pad to infect a target’s computer and exfiltrate files from a hard drive. In others, it has sent out spam emails laced with the malware, which can be tailored to covertly record audio from a computer’s microphone and take snapshots with its webcam. The hacking systems have also enabled the NSA to launch cyberattacks by corrupting and disrupting file downloads or denying access to websites.

The implants being deployed were once reserved for a few hundred hard-to-reach targets, whose communications could not be monitored through traditional wiretaps. But the documents analyzed by The Intercept show how the NSA has aggressively accelerated its hacking initiatives in the past decade by computerizing some processes previously handled by humans. The automated system – codenamed TURBINE – is designed to “allow the current implant network to scale to large size (millions of implants) by creating a system that does automated control implants by groups instead of individually.”

In a top-secret presentation, dated August 2009, the NSA describes a pre-programmed part of the covert infrastructure called the “Expert System,” which is designed to operate “like the brain.” The system manages the applications and functions of the implants and “decides” what tools they need to best extract data from infected machines.

Mikko Hypponen, an expert in malware who serves as chief research officer at the Finnish security firm F-Secure, calls the revelations “disturbing.” The NSA’s surveillance techniques, he warns, could inadvertently be undermining the security of the Internet.

“When they deploy malware on systems,” Hypponen says, “they potentially create new vulnerabilities in these systems, making them more vulnerable for attacks by third parties.”

Hypponen believes that governments could arguably justify using malware in a small number of targeted cases against adversaries. But millions of malware implants being deployed by the NSA as part of an automated process, he says, would be “out of control.”

“That would definitely not be proportionate,” Hypponen says. “It couldn’t possibly be targeted and named. It sounds like wholesale infection and wholesale surveillance.”

The NSA declined to answer questions about its deployment of implants, pointing to a new presidential policy directive announced by President Obama. “As the president made clear on 17 January,” the agency said in a statement, “signals intelligence shall be collected exclusively where there is a foreign intelligence or counterintelligence purpose to support national and departmental missions, and not for any other purposes.”

“Owning the Net”

The NSA began rapidly escalating its hacking efforts a decade ago. In 2004, according to secret internal records, the agency was managing a small network of only 100 to 150 implants. But over the next six to eight years, as an elite unit called Tailored Access Operations (TAO) recruited new hackers and developed new malware tools, the number of implants soared to tens of thousands.

To penetrate foreign computer networks and monitor communications that it did not have access to through other means, the NSA wanted to go beyond the limits of traditional signals intelligence, or SIGINT, the agency’s term for the interception of electronic communications. Instead, it sought to broaden “active” surveillance methods – tactics designed to directly infiltrate a target’s computers or network devices.

In the documents, the agency describes such techniques as “a more aggressive approach to SIGINT” and says that the TAO unit’s mission is to “aggressively scale” these operations.

But the NSA recognized that managing a massive network of implants is too big a job for humans alone.

“One of the greatest challenges for active SIGINT/attack is scale,” explains the top-secret presentation from 2009. “Human ‘drivers’ limit ability for large-scale exploitation (humans tend to operate within their own environment, not taking into account the bigger picture).”

The agency’s solution was TURBINE. Developed as part of TAO unit, it is described in the leaked documents as an “intelligent command and control capability” that enables “industrial-scale exploitation.”

TURBINE was designed to make deploying malware much easier for the NSA’s hackers by reducing their role in overseeing its functions. The system would “relieve the user from needing to know/care about the details,” the NSA’s Technology Directorate notes in one secret document from 2009. “For example, a user should be able to ask for ‘all details about application X’ and not need to know how and where the application keeps files, registry entries, user application data, etc.”

In practice, this meant that TURBINE would automate crucial processes that previously had to be performed manually – including the configuration of the implants as well as surveillance collection, or “tasking,” of data from infected systems. But automating these processes was about much more than a simple technicality. The move represented a major tactical shift within the NSA that was expected to have a profound impact – allowing the agency to push forward into a new frontier of surveillance operations.

The ramifications are starkly illustrated in one undated top-secret NSA document, which describes how the agency planned for TURBINE to “increase the current capability to deploy and manage hundreds of Computer Network Exploitation (CNE) and Computer Network Attack (CNA) implants to potentially millions of implants.” (CNE mines intelligence from computers and networks; CNA seeks to disrupt, damage or destroy them.)

Eventually, the secret files indicate, the NSA’s plans for TURBINE came to fruition. The system has been operational in some capacity since at least July 2010, and its role has become increasingly central to NSA hacking operations.

Earlier reports based on the Snowden files indicate that the NSA has already deployed between 85,000 and 100,000 of its implants against computers and networks across the world, with plans to keep on scaling up those numbers.

The intelligence community’s top-secret “Black Budget” for 2013, obtained by Snowden, lists TURBINE as part of a broader NSA surveillance initiative named “Owning the Net.”

The agency sought $67.6 million in taxpayer funding for its Owning the Net program last year. Some of the money was earmarked for TURBINE, expanding the system to encompass “a wider variety” of networks and “enabling greater automation of computer network exploitation.”

Circumventing Encryption

The NSA has a diverse arsenal of malware tools, each highly sophisticated and customizable for different purposes.

One implant, codenamed UNITEDRAKE, can be used with a variety of “plug-ins” that enable the agency to gain total control of an infected computer.

An implant plug-in named CAPTIVATEDAUDIENCE, for example, is used to take over a targeted computer’s microphone and record conversations taking place near the device. Another, GUMFISH, can covertly take over a computer’s webcam and snap photographs. FOGGYBOTTOM records logs of Internet browsing histories and collects login details and passwords used to access websites and email accounts. GROK is used to log keystrokes. And SALVAGERABBIT exfiltrates data from removable flash drives that connect to an infected computer.

The implants can enable the NSA to circumvent privacy-enhancing encryption tools that are used to browse the Internet anonymously or scramble the contents of emails as they are being sent across networks. That’s because the NSA’s malware gives the agency unfettered access to a target’s computer before the user protects their communications with encryption.

It is unclear how many of the implants are being deployed on an annual basis or which variants of them are currently active in computer systems across the world.

Previous reports have alleged that the NSA worked with Israel to develop the Stuxnet malware, which was used to sabotage Iranian nuclear facilities. The agency also reportedly worked with Israel to deploy malware called Flame to infiltrate computers and spy on communications in countries across the Middle East.

According to the Snowden files, the technology has been used to seek out terror suspects as well as individuals regarded by the NSA as “extremist.” But the mandate of the NSA’s hackers is not limited to invading the systems of those who pose a threat to national security.

In one secret post on an internal message board, an operative from the NSA’s Signals Intelligence Directorate describes using malware attacks against systems administrators who work at foreign phone and Internet service providers. By hacking an administrator’s computer, the agency can gain covert access to communications that are processed by his company. “Sys admins are a means to an end,” the NSA operative writes.

The internal post – titled “I hunt sys admins” – makes clear that terrorists aren’t the only targets of such NSA attacks. Compromising a systems administrator, the operative notes, makes it easier to get to other targets of interest, including any “government official that happens to be using the network some admin takes care of.”

Similar tactics have been adopted by Government Communications Headquarters, the NSA’s British counterpart. As the German newspaper Der Spiegel reported in September, GCHQ hacked computers belonging to network engineers at Belgacom, the Belgian telecommunications provider.

The mission, codenamed “Operation Socialist,” was designed to enable GCHQ to monitor mobile phones connected to Belgacom’s network. The secret files deem the mission a “success,” and indicate that the agency had the ability to covertly access Belgacom’s systems since at least 2010.

Infiltrating cellphone networks, however, is not all that the malware can be used to accomplish. The NSA has specifically tailored some of its implants to infect large-scale network routers used by Internet service providers in foreign countries. By compromising routers – the devices that connect computer networks and transport data packets across the Internet – the agency can gain covert access to monitor Internet traffic, record the browsing sessions of users, and intercept communications.

Two implants the NSA injects into network routers, HAMMERCHANT and HAMMERSTEIN, help the agency to intercept and perform “exploitation attacks” against data that is sent through a Virtual Private Network, a tool that uses encrypted “tunnels” to enhance the security and privacy of an Internet session.

The implants also track phone calls sent across the network via Skype and other Voice Over IP software, revealing the username of the person making the call. If the audio of the VOIP conversation is sent over the Internet using unencrypted “Real-time Transport Protocol” packets, the implants can covertly record the audio data and then return it to the NSA for analysis.

But not all of the NSA’s implants are used to gather intelligence, the secret files show. Sometimes, the agency’s aim is disruption rather than surveillance. QUANTUMSKY, a piece of NSA malware developed in 2004, is used to block targets from accessing certain websites. QUANTUMCOPPER, first tested in 2008, corrupts a target’s file downloads. These two “attack” techniques are revealed on a classified list that features nine NSA hacking tools, six of which are used for intelligence gathering. Just one is used for “defensive” purposes – to protect U.S. government networks against intrusions.

“Mass exploitation potential”

Before it can extract data from an implant or use it to attack a system, the NSA must first install the malware on a targeted computer or network.

According to one top-secret document from 2012, the agency can deploy malware by sending out spam emails that trick targets into clicking a malicious link. Once activated, a “back-door implant” infects their computers within eight seconds.

There’s only one problem with this tactic, codenamed WILLOWVIXEN: According to the documents, the spam method has become less successful in recent years, as Internet users have become wary of unsolicited emails and less likely to click on anything that looks suspicious.

Consequently, the NSA has turned to new and more advanced hacking techniques. These include performing so-called “man-in-the-middle” and “man-on-the-side” attacks, which covertly force a user’s internet browser to route to NSA computer servers that try to infect them with an implant.

To perform a man-on-the-side attack, the NSA observes a target’s Internet traffic using its global network of covert “accesses” to data as it flows over fiber optic cables or satellites. When the target visits a website that the NSA is able to exploit, the agency’s surveillance sensors alert the TURBINE system, which then “shoots” data packets at the targeted computer’s IP address within a fraction of a second.

In one man-on-the-side technique, codenamed QUANTUMHAND, the agency disguises itself as a fake Facebook server. When a target attempts to log in to the social media site, the NSA transmits malicious data packets that trick the target’s computer into thinking they are being sent from the real Facebook. By concealing its malware within what looks like an ordinary Facebook page, the NSA is able to hack into the targeted computer and covertly siphon out data from its hard drive. The documents show that QUANTUMHAND became operational in October 2010, after being successfully tested by the NSA against about a dozen targets.

According to Matt Blaze, a surveillance and cryptography expert at the University of Pennsylvania, it appears that the QUANTUMHAND technique is aimed at targeting specific individuals. But he expresses concerns about how it has been covertly integrated within Internet networks as part of the NSA’s automated TURBINE system.

“As soon as you put this capability in the backbone infrastructure, the software and security engineer in me says that’s terrifying,” Blaze says.

“Forget about how the NSA is intending to use it. How do we know it is working correctly and only targeting who the NSA wants? And even if it does work correctly, which is itself a really dubious assumption, how is it controlled?”

In an email statement to The Intercept, Facebook spokesman Jay Nancarrow said the company had “no evidence of this alleged activity.” He added that Facebook implemented HTTPS encryption for users last year, making browsing sessions less vulnerable to malware attacks.

Nancarrow also pointed out that other services besides Facebook could have been compromised by the NSA. “If government agencies indeed have privileged access to network service providers,” he said, “any site running only [unencrypted] HTTP could conceivably have its traffic misdirected.”

A man-in-the-middle attack is a similar but slightly more aggressive method that can be used by the NSA to deploy its malware. It refers to a hacking technique in which the agency covertly places itself between computers as they are communicating with each other.

This allows the NSA not only to observe and redirect browsing sessions, but to modify the content of data packets that are passing between computers.

The man-in-the-middle tactic can be used, for instance, to covertly change the content of a message as it is being sent between two people, without either knowing that any change has been made by a third party. The same technique is sometimes used by criminal hackers to defraud people.

A top-secret NSA presentation from 2012 reveals that the agency developed a man-in-the-middle capability called SECONDDATE to “influence real-time communications between client and server” and to “quietly redirect web-browsers” to NSA malware servers called FOXACID. In October, details about the FOXACID system were reported by the Guardian, which revealed its links to attacks against users of the Internet anonymity service Tor.

But SECONDDATE is tailored not only for “surgical” surveillance attacks on individual suspects. It can also be used to launch bulk malware attacks against computers.

According to the 2012 presentation, the tactic has “mass exploitation potential for clients passing through network choke points.”

Blaze, the University of Pennsylvania surveillance expert, says the potential use of man-in-the-middle attacks on such a scale “seems very disturbing.” Such an approach would involve indiscriminately monitoring entire networks as opposed to targeting individual suspects.

“The thing that raises a red flag for me is the reference to ‘network choke points,’” he says. “That’s the last place that we should be allowing intelligence agencies to compromise the infrastructure – because that is by definition a mass surveillance technique.”

To deploy some of its malware implants, the NSA exploits security vulnerabilities in commonly used Internet browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The agency’s hackers also exploit security weaknesses in network routers and in popular software plugins such as Flash and Java to deliver malicious code onto targeted machines.

The implants can circumvent anti-virus programs, and the NSA has gone to extreme lengths to ensure that its clandestine technology is extremely difficult to detect. An implant named VALIDATOR, used by the NSA to upload and download data to and from an infected machine, can be set to self-destruct – deleting itself from an infected computer after a set time expires.

In many cases, firewalls and other security measures do not appear to pose much of an obstacle to the NSA. Indeed, the agency’s hackers appear confident in their ability to circumvent any security mechanism that stands between them and compromising a computer or network. “If we can get the target to visit us in some sort of web browser, we can probably own them,” an agency hacker boasts in one secret document. “The only limitation is the ‘how.’”

Covert Infrastructure

The TURBINE implants system does not operate in isolation.

It is linked to, and relies upon, a large network of clandestine surveillance “sensors” that the agency has installed at locations across the world.

The NSA’s headquarters in Maryland are part of this network, as are eavesdropping bases used by the agency in Misawa, Japan and Menwith Hill, England.

The sensors, codenamed TURMOIL, operate as a sort of high-tech surveillance dragnet, monitoring packets of data as they are sent across the Internet.

When TURBINE implants exfiltrate data from infected computer systems, the TURMOIL sensors automatically identify the data and return it to the NSA for analysis. And when targets are communicating, the TURMOIL system can be used to send alerts or “tips” to TURBINE, enabling the initiation of a malware attack.

The NSA identifies surveillance targets based on a series of data “selectors” as they flow across Internet cables. These selectors, according to internal documents, can include email addresses, IP addresses, or the unique “cookies” containing a username or other identifying information that are sent to a user’s computer by websites such as Google, Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, and Twitter.

Other selectors the NSA uses can be gleaned from unique Google advertising cookies that track browsing habits, unique encryption key fingerprints that can be traced to a specific user, and computer IDs that are sent across the Internet when a Windows computer crashes or updates.

What’s more, the TURBINE system operates with the knowledge and support of other governments, some of which have participated in the malware attacks.

Classification markings on the Snowden documents indicate that NSA has shared many of its files on the use of implants with its counterparts in the so-called Five Eyes surveillance alliance – the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

GCHQ, the British agency, has taken on a particularly important role in helping to develop the malware tactics. The Menwith Hill satellite eavesdropping base that is part of the TURMOIL network, located in a rural part of Northern England, is operated by the NSA in close cooperation with GCHQ.

Top-secret documents show that the British base – referred to by the NSA as “MHS” for Menwith Hill Station – is an integral component of the TURBINE malware infrastructure and has been used to experiment with implant “exploitation” attacks against users of Yahoo and Hotmail.

In one document dated 2010, at least five variants of the QUANTUM hacking method were listed as being “operational” at Menwith Hill. The same document also reveals that GCHQ helped integrate three of the QUANTUM malware capabilities – and test two others – as part of a surveillance system it operates codenamed INSENSER.

GCHQ cooperated with the hacking attacks despite having reservations about their legality. One of the Snowden files, previously disclosed by Swedish broadcaster SVT, revealed that as recently as April 2013, GCHQ was apparently reluctant to get involved in deploying the QUANTUM malware due to “legal/policy restrictions.” A representative from a unit of the British surveillance agency, meeting with an obscure telecommunications standards committee in 2010, separately voiced concerns that performing “active” hacking attacks for surveillance “may be illegal” under British law.

In response to questions from The Intercept, GCHQ refused to comment on its involvement in the covert hacking operations. Citing its boilerplate response to inquiries, the agency said in a statement that “all of GCHQ’s work is carried out in accordance with a strict legal and policy framework which ensures that our activities are authorized, necessary and proportionate, and that there is rigorous oversight.”

Whatever the legalities of the United Kingdom and United States infiltrating computer networks, the Snowden files bring into sharp focus the broader implications. Under cover of secrecy and without public debate, there has been an unprecedented proliferation of aggressive surveillance techniques. One of the NSA’s primary concerns, in fact, appears to be that its clandestine tactics are now being adopted by foreign rivals, too.

“Hacking routers has been good business for us and our 5-eyes partners for some time,” notes one NSA analyst in a top-secret document dated December 2012. “But it is becoming more apparent that other nation states are honing their skillz [sic] and joining the scene.” source

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Firework mortars and camp fuel canisters were found stuffed into the back of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel early Wednesday, killing a suspect inside the vehicle and sparking an intense investigation into possible terrorism.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and Clark County Fire Department officials said that a person died inside the futuristic-looking pickup truck and seven people nearby suffered minor injuries.

By late Wednesday afternoon, authorities were still working to get the body out of the vehicle and start processing the evidence inside. President Joe Biden was briefed on the explosion.

“Our number one goal is to ensure that we have the proper identification of the subject involved in this incident,” said Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge for the FBI’s Las Vegas office, “Following that, our second objective is to determine whether this was an act of terrorism or not.”

Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said authorities know who rented the truck with the Turo app in Colorado, but are not releasing the name until investigators determine if it is the same person who died.

McMahill said video captured at Telsa charging stations provided by CEO Elon Musk helped authorities track the vehicle’s journey, arriving in Las Vegas about 7:30 AM. then driving about an hour later into the valet area of the Trump International Hotel, where it sat 15 to 20 seconds before the explosion occurred.

Video presented at an afternoon news conference showed a tumble of charred fireworks mortars, cannisters and other explosive devices crowded into the back of the pickup. The truck bed walls were still intact because the blast shot straight up rather than to the sides.

Musk said Wednesday afternoon on X that “we have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”

In an earlier post on the platform Musk said that his entire senior term was investigating the explosion, adding, “We’ve never seen anything like this.”

Musk has recently become a member of Trump’s inner circle. Neither Trump nor Musk were in Las Vegas early Wednesday. Both had attended Trump’s New Year’s Eve party at Trump’s estate in South Florida.

Musk spent an estimated $250 million during the presidential campaign to support the former president. He was at Trump’s resort on election night and has been a frequent guest there. Trump has named Musk, the world’s richest man, to co-lead a new effort to find ways to cut the government’s size and spending.

“This is a Tesla truck, and we know that Elon Musk is working with President-elect Trump, and it’s the Trump Tower,” McMahill said when reporters asked about possible political connections. “So there’s obviously things to be concerned about and it’s something we continue to look at.”

The truck explosion came hours after a driver rammed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day, killing at least 15 people before being shot to death by police. That crash was being investigated as a terrorist attack and police believe the driver was not acting alone.

In a statement, Turo said it was working with authorities.

“We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat,” the statement said.

In Las Vegas, witness Ana Bruce, visiting from Brazil, said she heard three explosions.

“The first one where we saw the fire, the second one, I guess, was the battery or something like that, and the third was the big one that smoked the entire area and was the moment when everyone was told to evacuate and stay away,” Bruce said.

Her travel companion, Alcides Antunes, showed video he took of flames lapping the sides of the silver-colored vehicle.

The 64-story hotel is just off the Las Vegas Strip and across the street from the Fashion Show Las Vegas shopping mall.

Elon Musk says he will ban Apple devices at his companies.

Apple announced earlier on Monday that it would integrate OpenAI’s technology into its iPhones. When users are speaking to Siri, it will be able to hand off some queries to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s large language model.

Mr Musk said that such an update would be an “unacceptable security violation”.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, the platform he owns.

“And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.” A Faraday cage is a closed box that stops wireless signals coming in or going out.

Mr Musk’s ban would presumably affect SpaceX and Tesla, in addition to X.

Apple had said earlier that the feature would be released later this year. OpenAI confirmed that its technology would be broadly integrated into the operating system.

Both OpenAI and Apple stressed that it would include privacy protections. “Requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured,” OpenAI said in its announcement.

The integration will mean that Siri requests can also be sent to ChatGPT. It will be able to handoff questions – as well as documents and photos – for help.

It will also be available within a new Apple system called “Writing Tools”. That allows users to generate content for their writing, or have their documents re-written in fewer words or in different styles.

And Apple will also integrate OpenAI’s image generation technologies so that they can create illustrations to sit alongside their documents.

All of the features are part of a suite of features called “Apple Intelligence”. While that mostly relies on Apple’s own technologies, it also integrates those from OpenAI.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman was present at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, where the new features were released, through he did not appear during the presentation.

Mr Musk and OpenAI have a long and complicated history. He was one of the founders of the company when it launched at the end of 2015 – but has become gradually more hostile towards it, criticising it for failing to live up to its founding principles.

He has since sued the company and Mr Altman, accusing them of prioritising profits and failing to live up to its original mission. In response, OpenAI said that it rejected all of Mr Musk’s claims.

Mr Musk has also had an occasionally contentious relationship with Apple.

In 2022, he publicly attacked Apple and its chief executive Tim Cook over the cut it takes from payments made on the iPhone. Soon after, Mr Musk met with Mr Cook at Apple’s headquarters.

Apple Finally Unveils IPhone AI Features: ‘The Next Big Step’

Apple has finally revealed its response to the current hype over AI: its own technology called “Apple Intelligence”.

The tools are a “personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant”, Apple said as it announced the feature.

In some ways they are similar to the AI tools that have been announced by most major technology companies in recent months. After the update, iPhones will be able to liaise with ChatGPT and create images using generative AI.

At the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) 2024, Intel gave us a particularly interesting glimpse at what could be the future of chip and interconnect design. The Optical Compute Interconnect (OCI) chiplet integrates a Photonics Integrated Circuit (PIC) with an electrical IC. The chiplet was packaged with an Intel CPU and shown running live data.

Intel believes this technology is a game changer as it meets increasing demand for higher bandwidth across greater distances, while using less power. Of course, the initial applications will be used for AI infrastructure and HPC environments, where scalability concerns across racks and clusters are becoming increasingly apparent in large scale deployments.

Intel’s press release included the following statement: “As an analogy, replacing electrical I/O with optical I/O in CPUs and GPUs to transfer data is like going from using horse-drawn carriages to distribute goods, limited in capacity and range, to using cars and trucks that can deliver much larger quantities of goods over much longer distances. This level of improved performance and energy cost is what optical I/O solutions like Intel’s OCI chiplet emerging bring to AI scaling.” That tells us where Intel believes the future of interconnect technology lies.

Although the OCI is a prototype, it already supports up to 4 terabits per second (Tbps) bidirectional data transfer across distances as far as 100 meters. Importantly, the technology is compatible with PCIe 5.0, making it relatively easy to integrate into existing PCIe compatible infrastructure.

In terms of power savings, Intel claims its solution is much more efficient, consuming only 5 pico-joules (pJ) per bit compared to pluggable optical transceiver modules at about 15 pJ/bit.

The OCI chiplet can be integrated with future CPUs, GPUs and SoCs. Should the technology reach the consumer space in the years ahead—and if it takes off in the enterprise space there’s little reason to doubt it will—then PCs in the years ahead could look very different.

Imagine being able to install a GPU that doesn’t require a PCIe slot. You could install it anywhere in a compatible case, and connect it to a motherboard via a cable without any loss of performance. That should lead to improved cooling performance and potentially simpler (and cheaper) motherboard designs.

Intel says it has developed a new silicon photonics fabrication process and it expects the technology to scale from the 4 Tbps range to tens of Tbps in the future. Chips with optical interconnects and glass substrates likely just got a step closer. source

At the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2024, Intel’s Integrated Photonics Solutions (IPS) Group demonstrated the industry’s most advanced and first-ever fully integrated optical compute interconnect (OCI) chiplet co-packaged with an Intel CPU and running live data. Intel’s OCI chiplet represents a leap forward in high-bandwidth interconnect by enabling co-packaged optical input/output (I/O) in emerging AI infrastructure for data centers and high performance computing (HPC) applications.

What It Does: This first OCI chiplet is designed to support 64 channels of 32 gigabits per second (Gbps) data transmission in each direction on up to 100 meters of fiber optics and is expected to address AI infrastructure’s growing demands for higher bandwidth, lower power consumption and longer reach. It enables future scalability of CPU/GPU cluster connectivity and novel compute architectures, including coherent memory expansion and resource disaggregation.

Why It Matters: AI-based applications are increasingly deployed globally, and recent developments in large language models (LLM) and generative AI are accelerating that trend. Larger and more efficient machine learning (ML) models will play a key role in addressing the emerging requirements of AI acceleration workloads. The need to scale future computing platforms for AI is driving exponential growth in I/O bandwidth and longer reach to support larger processing unit (CPU/GPU/IPU) clusters and architectures with more efficient resource utilization, such as xPU disaggregation and memory pooling.

Electrical I/O (i.e., copper trace connectivity) supports high bandwidth density and low power, but only offers short reaches of about one meter or less. Pluggable optical transceiver modules used in data centers and early AI clusters can increase reach at cost and power levels that are not sustainable with the scaling requirements of AI workloads. A co-packaged xPU optical I/O solution can support higher bandwidths with improved power efficiency, low latency and longer reach – exactly what AI/ML infrastructure scaling requires.

As an analogy, replacing electrical I/O with optical I/O in CPUs and GPUs to transfer data is like going from using horse-drawn carriages to distribute goods, limited in capacity and range, to using cars and trucks that can deliver much larger quantities of goods over much longer distances. How It Works: The fully Integrated OCI chiplet leverages Intel’s field-proven silicon photonics technology and integrates a silicon photonics integrated circuit (PIC), which includes on-chip lasers and optical amplifiers, with an electrical IC. The OCI chiplet demonstrated at OFC was co-packaged with an Intel CPU but can also be integrated with next-generation CPUs, GPUs, IPUs and other system-on-chips (SoCs).

This first OCI implementation supports up to 4 terabits per second (Tbps) bidirectional data transfer, compatible with peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) Gen5. The live optical link demonstration showcases a transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) connection between two CPU platforms over a single-mode fiber (SMF) patch cord. The CPUs generated and measured the optical Bit Error Rate (BER), and the demo showcases the Tx optical spectrum with 8 wavelengths at 200 gigahertz (GHz) spacing on a single fiber, along with a 32 Gbps Tx eye diagram illustrating strong signal quality.

The current chiplet supports 64 channels of 32 Gbps data in each direction up to 100 meters (though practical applications may be limited to tens of meters due to time-of-flight latency), utilizing eight fiber pairs, each carrying eight dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) wavelengths. The co-packaged solution is also remarkably energy efficient, consuming only 5 pico-Joules (pJ) per bit compared to pluggable optical transceiver modules at about 15 pJ/bit. This level of hyper-efficiency is critical for data centers and high-performance computing environments and could help address AI’s unsustainable power requirements.

What’s Next: Intel’s current OCI chiplet is a prototype. Intel is working with select customers to co-package OCI with their SoCs as an optical I/O solution.

Scientists have figured out how to identify people in a building by using artificial intelligence to analyse WiFi signals.

A team at Carnegie Mellon University developed a deep neural network to digitally map human bodies when in the presence of WiFi signals.

The researchers said they developed the technology in an effort to address the limitations of current 2D and 3D computer vision tools like cameras, Lidar and radars.

A pre-print study of the technology describes how the system “can serve as a ubiquitous substitute” for these other methods.

“The results of the study reveal that our model can estimate the dense pose of multiple subjects, with comparable performance to image-based approaches, by utilising WiFi signals as the only input,” the researchers wrote in the study.

“This paves the way for low-cost, broadly accessible, and privacy-preserving algorithms for human sensing.”

The researchers used a system called DensePose, which was developed by AI researchers at Meta’s Facebook, to measure the phase and amplitude signals emitted from WiFi routers.

The WiFi-based model is currently limited to 2D models of people, however the researchers hope to keep developing it in order to be able to predict 3D human shapes.

The team claims the device offers a cheap and “privacy-friendly” alternative to cameras and Lidars, as it does not provide a clear image of the subject.Potential applications include assisting elderly people, the scientists noted, allowing them to continue to live independently.

“We believe that WiFi signals can serve as a ubiquitous substitute for RGB [camera] images for human sensing in certain instances,” they wrote.

Scientists find way to photograph people through walls using WiFi

The technology can be used to map out the inside of a building in 20 to 30 seconds

Scientist at the Technical University of Munich have come up with a new technology that can take 3D photographs of objects inside a room or building using WiFi.

The research, which was published by Physical Review Letters, shows that wireless data transmission systems including WiFi or Bluetooth emit electromagnetic waves with a precisely known amplitude and phase which can be used to map objects in their surroundings.

“Propagating in space, this radiation forms a hologram — a two-dimensional wave front encoding a three-dimensional view of all objects traversed by the light beam. Three-dimensional views of objects and emitters are made by feeding the resulting data into digital reconstruction algorithms,” Philip Holls and Friedemann Reinhard noted in their report.

The two scientist went on to test their ground breaking technology in an experimental environment. Stray radiation from a commercial router was employed to image metre-sized objects by digital holography. The researchers then record a hologram of WiFi radiation by using a synthetic aperture approach.

The scientist then employ digital implementation of dark-field propagation to suppress multipath reflection, which significantly enhances the quality of the resulting images.

“It can basically scan a room with someone’s WiFi transmission,” said Holl, a 23-year-old undergraduate physics student at the Technical University of Munich. He initially built the device as part of his bachelor thesis with the help of his academic supervisor, Friedemann Reinhard.

“If there’s a cup of coffee on a table, you may see something is there, but you couldn’t see the shape,” said Holl. “But you could make out the shape of a person, or a dog on a couch. Really any object that’s more than four centimetres in size.”

The technology, which is at its early stages, has application in a wide range of areas. Adding an array of reference antennas, said Holl, inside a truck, might help rescue workers detect people in rubble left by an earthquake or spy agencies see whether anyone is home.

“You could probably use a drone to map out the inside of an entire building in 20 to 30 seconds,” he said. source

It isn’t immediately clear how using only a WiFi signal to track human movement through walls improves personal privacy … but that’s what a new study from Carnegie Mellon University claims.

In a recently published paper, the researchers expanded on the study of employing WiFi signals to map human movement, especially in low-light situations that make using other technologies less than desirable. They write:

“We developed a deep neural network that maps the phase and amplitude of WiFi signals to UV coordinates within 24 human regions. The results of the study reveal that our model can estimate the dense pose of multiple subjects, with comparable performance to image-based approaches, by utilizing WiFi signals as the only input.”

This pathway opens the options for low-cost, broadly accessible human tracking through walls.

High-cost technology has successfully mapped people’s movements through walls for years. And researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have spent over a decade working on ways to more easily see people through walls, whether using cell phone signals or WiFi. In the Carnegie Mellon study, scientists had WiFi signals send and receive a body’s coordinates and then used DensePose to map the body.

From the study:

“Advances in computer vision and machine learning techniques have led to significant development in 2D and 3D human pose estimation from RGB cameras, LiDAR, and radars. However, human pose estimation from images is adversely affected by occlusion and lighting, which are common in many scenarios of interest.”

This neural network uses WiFi to see through walls

“Yes, a simple WiFi signal can be used to spy on us through walls, a scary thought for people who value their privacy”, Nigel elaborates.

Seeing through walls is an ability most people associate with Superman’s X-ray vision or James Bond’s X-ray sunglasses but scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have come up with a way to see through walls using a neural network and WiFi signals. While previous efforts by MIT researchers used radio waves to see through walls, the images were typically low resolution and difficult to use to identify people.

WiFi signals, however, are apparently even better than regular RGB cameras for detecting humans and can be hooked up to a neural network in order to create a 3D map of a human body standing on the other side of a wall. Yes, a simple WiFi signal can be used to spy on us through walls, a scary thought for people who value their privacy.

WiFi Vision

As opposed to a camera that works on the principles of light and visibility, this innovation sends a low-powered WiFi signal through a wall in order to detect everything in the room on the other side of it. It does this much like a radar signal that bounces off static objects to detect movement. In the case of human bodies, the WiFi signal sends the coordinates of key points on the human body like the head, arms, and legs (that determine posture) which are then fed into a system called DensePose which assimilates them into a 3D picture. DensePose is a deep neural network that can map all the pixels from a 2D RGB image of the human body and convert them to a 3D image.

Developed by a team of researchers from London along with Facebook’s AI team, the process involves establishing a “dense” correspondence between a 2D image and a 3D surface model. In this case, however, it’s not 2D images that are being mapped but rather the results of a WiFi-powered scan that is being mapped to a 3D image.

The efficiency and accuracy of details are quite astounding as you can see in some images on the DensePose website. While this explanation could be interpreted by some to be overly simplified since there’s quite a lot of mathematics involved in this process of “pose estimation,” the short version is that the technology does work and will only require off-the-shelf WiFi equipment to use.

Security Implications

Now while researchers argue that this innovation could be progress for privacy rights since we won’t need cameras everywhere anymore, that’s sort of like making the TV remote shoot lasers and then saying the good part is we don’t need guns anymore. If every lunatic that could get their hands on a TV remote could use it to blast things out of their way, there wouldn’t be a lot of things left to blast. Similarly, if every nosey person could use a WiFi router to see through walls, it would officially be the end of privacy, can you imagine if the paparazzi got their hands on something like this? No one would be safe, especially since walls are something most people expect to be able to rely on for privacy.

Now while there is always an upside to new technology like the potential to use it for law enforcement or even home security purposes, like in the case of nuclear technology, it always cuts both ways. Researchers at Waterloo University have devised a way to use WiFi to see through walls using a store-bought drone and an additional $20 worth of store-bought equipment.

While the Wi-Peep doesn’t have a fancy 3D mapping application powering it, what it does have is a security loophole called Polite WiFi. What this means is that every WiFi-powered device, even secure, will respond to contact attempts from other devices in range. These responses are then used to track and locate the wearers of these devices or the devices themselves.

X-ray Vision

With the amount of data we generate on a daily basis, there are those who would argue that our phones already know more about us than we possibly ever could. That being said, however, the possibility of being spied on every time you operate a WiFi device might be something we may just have to get used to in the future. In addition to walls, WiFi also overcomes a number of obstacles like poor lighting, occlusion, or even the need for a camera.

There’s no argument that it would be great for the armed forces and covert military operations where knowledge of the insides of enemy buildings is generally hard to come by unless you have someone inside. If X-ray vision is a superpower we are going to have soon, we may as well enjoy it. As for privacy, for all we know, it may already be dead. source

WiFi routers can see people through walls. Here’s how it works

With the help of AI, the researchers were able to detect the movement of human bodies in a room using Wi-Fi routers — even through walls.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have repurposed a common piece of tech found inn virtually every household into a tracking technology.

They used radio signals from WiFi routers to detect and track the three-dimensional shape and movements of human bodies in a room. They didn’t have to use any cameras or expensive LiDAR hardware.

“We believe that WiFi signals can serve as a ubiquitous substitute for RGB images for human sensing in certain instances. Illumination and occlusion have little effect on WiFi-based solutions used for interior monitoring. In addition, they protect individuals’ privacy and the required equipment can be bought at a reasonable price. In fact, most households in developed countries already have WiFi at home, and this technology may be scaled to monitor the well-being of elder people or just identify suspicious behaviors at home,” the authors wrote in their study, which is yet to be formally peer-reviewed and is available on the preprint server ArXiv.

AI turns WiFi routers into cameras that can see through walls

The team used DensePose, a system for mapping all of the pixels on the surface of a human body in a photo, developed by researchers at Facebook’s AI lab and a London-based team. What makes DensePose powerful is its ability to identify over two dozen key points and areas in the human body, such as joints and body parts like the arms, head, and torso. This allows the AI to describe a person’s pose.
