A lone gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, walked into a midtown Manhattan office building Monday and opened fire, killing four people before turning the gun on himself.

Three of the four people killed in the shooting were identified as NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tamura appeared to take the wrong elevator bank inside 345 Park Avenue Monday when he carried out his attack, adding that “it appears as though he was going after the employees at the NFL.”

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but the gunman reportedly had a grievance with the NFL, blaming the sport of football for apparent issues with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a side effect from repeated hits to the head.

Julia Hyman, a 2020 Cornell University graduate who worked for Rudin Management, was identified as another one of the victims of the New York City shooting, sources told the New York Post.

Hyman was an associate with the real estate company, according to a LinkedIn profile purportedly belonging to her.

“The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost last night, including our cherished Rudin colleague, a brave New York City police officer, a beloved lobby security guard and an employee at a tenant firm,” the Rudin family said in a statement.

“We are grateful to the NYPD, FBI, EMS and multiple other emergency responders for their swift and courageous action. We also thank the Mayor and Police Commissioner for their leadership. The building will remain closed today as the authorities continue their investigations,” they added. “As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured.”

Earlier this morning, financial firm Blackstone identified Wesley LePatner as an executive who was killed in the attack.

LePatner, a senior managing director, was Blackstone’s Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and the Chief Executive Officer of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust.

The shooting left NYPD Officer Didarul Islam and one other person dead.

Sen. Chuck Schumer revealed Tuesday on the Senate floor that he once worked at 345 Park Avenue, the site of the shooting Monday in New York City.

“Yesterday, my city — the greatest city on earth — was shattered when a gunman took the lives of four innocent New Yorkers in cold blood, just four blocks from my office in Midtown Manhattan,” Schumer said. “I actually worked in the building where the shooting took place for one summer as a summer associate at a law firm.”

“I want to thank the first responders who ran toward the gunfire — all of the cops, EMTs, firefighters that got there fast and prevented even more bloodshed.
In a 2015 Los Angeles Times article, Tamura was mentioned by his high school football coach ahead of his senior year. His coach said Tamura, a running back, was one of the few players he was “looking for big things from.”

LOS ANGELES – Three sheriff’s deputies who were members of the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail were killed following an explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East Los Angeles Friday morning, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion around 7:25 a.m. at the facility located in the 1000 block of Eastern Avenue, near the 710 Freeway.

The training center was evacuated and roads in the area were closed as the investigation continued. The impact of the explosion was so powerful it broke the windows of patrol cars in the parking lot.

The facility serves the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau and Arson/Explosives Detail.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the post-blast investigation and is being assisted by the ATF, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a news conference on Friday.

“There’s a lot more that we don’t know than what we do know. But our intent is to look at this from the very beginning and figure out what is it exactly that caused this tragic event,” Luna said.

LA deputies killed in explosion had long history with the department

Former LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the three deputies killed Friday in an explosion at an East LA training facility had decades of experience with the department. Today’s tragedy is the worst loss of life incident for LASD since 1857.

Explosion at training facility

What we don’t know:

While the official cause of the explosion is under investigation, preliminary information indicates this was a possible training accident.

It’s unclear what type of explosive materials were being handled by the deputies.

The deputies were identified as detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn. They were all assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail, according to the department.

Luna said the deputies had a combined 74 years of service between them at 19 years, 22 years and 33 years.

LASD deputies killed in explosion identified

Three LASD deputies were killed in an explosion in East LA on Friday. Detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn had decades of experience in the department.

“I have met with two of the three families thus far. And as you can imagine, those were extremely challenging conversations,” Luna said, holding back tears.

The deputies had 20 plus years of experience in the field of arson/explosives. Two of the deputies provided security for the LA County Board of Supervisors.

Link to Santa Monica apartment

According to law enforcement, the deadly explosion may be linked to a Santa Monica apartment complex.

Officials say on Wednesday construction workers were installing EV chargers when they found grenades in a former tenant’s personal storage unit. The bomb squad was then called in. LASD officials say the grenades found at the apartment, located at 821 Bay Street, were related to today’s explosion. LASD homicide investigators were at the apartment Friday afternoon.

Santa Monica investigation tied to LASD explosion

Bomb squad investigators at a Santa Monica apartment building found what appeared to be grenades. The alleged grenades may be connected to the explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility that killed three deputies.

This is the largest loss of life for the LA County Sheriff’s Department since an ambush in 1857. In terms of explosives, in 1986 two LAPD bomb squad members were killed in an explosion in North Hollywood.

A procession was held around 5 p.m. Friday, transferring the deputies’ bodies from the training center to the medical examiner’s office. Dozens of sheriff’s deputies stood in formation and saluted as the bodies were carried to a trio of medical examiner vans.

Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda L. Solis, Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn all expressed sorrow and support following the explosion. Solis said she was deeply saddened by the loss and is in contact with Sheriff Robert Luna. Barger also expressed sympathy and said her thoughts are with the department and victims’ families. Hahn called the deadly explosion “an extraordinarily painful day.”

LA Mayor Karen Bass said the city was supporting the tragic incident and that LAFD arson investigators and LAPD bomb squad personnel are assisting as needed.

“The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of these impacted by this blast,” the Mayor said on X.

Sen. Adam Schiff called the incident “an unbelievable tragedy” and added that he is “praying for the deputies’ families and every member of the sheriff’s office.”

Los Angeles-area U.S. Rep. Judy Chu said on X that she was “heartbroken by the tragic news of the explosion at the @LASDHQ training facility in Monterey Park that claimed the lives of three brave deputies.”

“I am monitoring the situation closely,” she wrote. My deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and fellow law enforcement officers mourning this unimaginable loss.

National security expert provides insight

What we know:

National security expert Hal Kempfer, who has worked previously with the LASD, called the situation “a horrific thing to see.”

“They are probably one of the best trained, most professional, special operations, law enforcement organizations in the country and the world,” he said. “So for something like this to happen, they’re gonna be looking at this very closely and trying to figure out what exactly occurred.”

Regarding the cause, Kempfer said it seems the deputies were transporting explosive materials when the incident occurred.

“It just tells me that probably they were transporting or storing something and something went horribly wrong,” he said. “Frankly, things do go wrong with demolitions. You take a lot of precautions and everything, but it’s dangerous work, dangerous training, dangerous business, and sometimes accidents do occur.”

National Security expert weighs in on LASD explosion

Hal Kempfer joined Good Day LA to discuss an explosion that left three Los Angeles County deputies dead on the morning on Friday, July 18.

Kempfer described the possible situation that may have unfolded.

“It would make sense that you’d have a driver and an assistant driver in a vehicle moving this, but because it is dangerous explosives, there may have been a couple of other deputies assigned to provide security in case anything happened along the way, and that might explain why you have four deputies involved,” he said.

“You know the driver sees things, but the assistant driver is an extra pair of eyes. And obviously with something like, you know, if you’re moving a load like this, you absolutely want to be extremely cautious about what you’re doing. So you need that extra set of eyes, but then of course, if anybody from the outside had knowledge that this was a load of explosives being moved, obviously that would make it a potential target for pilferage or worse. So you’d probably want some security as well. On the other hand, it could have been that they were moving to a range or something like that or moving to another facility. And it just happened that there were, you know, four deputies total because of whatever they were planning to do.”

As ar as the protocol goes, Kempfer said it all depends on the amount of explosives that are being moved.

“If you’re moving a few flashbangs, you’re not going to have four deputies needed for that,” he said. “But if you are moving a larger load of explosives, and it could be explosives that were tied to evidence, this could be a part of a seizure, and that would make sense to me if it was part of a seizure because a lot of times when you recover explosives from a crime scene, they’re not necessarily in as good a shape as the stuff that you would normally use. They may be less stable, they may be old, there may be a lot of problems,” he added.

Kempfer said it was “improbable, if not impossible” that the deputies did not know the materials were explosive or active.

“If this was something where someone had secretly planted explosives, that would be a different situation. It sounds like they were just simply moving explosive material and it sounds like a tragic accident,” he said. “Things just sometimes go horribly wrong with explosive materials.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has identified the three deputies killed in Friday’s training facility explosion at an East Los Angeles County training site.

The devastating explosion has been considered one of the agency’s deadliest internal tragedies in years.

The blast happened just after 7:30 a.m., claiming the lives of Deputies Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. All three men were assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail and were described as brave men who served with honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the community, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

“There are no words to express the pain and sorrow we feel,” said Sheriff Robert Luna. “These heroes represented the best of our Department, exemplifying courage, integrity, and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families, but for all of us.”

The incident is still under investigation, and it is unclear if the deputies were examining the explosives at the time of the blast.

A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer who appeared “high” while responding to a call last year has lost his state police certification.

James Shepherd started with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department in January 2018.

According to court documents filed in a federal lawsuit in October, Shepherd responded to a child custody dispute in January 2023.

“Shepherd appeared to be under the influence of some type of substance as he had to lean on the wall for support, was speaking so fast that Plaintiffs could hardly understand him, his face was flush, he was blinking his eyes at an unusual frequency, was slurring his words, and just generally acting strange,” the lawsuit alleged.

A video of the encounter was posted on social media.

Criminal charges were declined and the lawsuit was dismissed in January.

The Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Trainings, or CPOST, which certifies officers in the state, received a complaint about Shepherd, which included the recording.

The commission arranged an interview with Shepherd to determine if any prescription drugs impaired his ability as a police officer. Shepherd’s attorney then told the commission he would not be attending the interview, according to CPOST documents.

The commission can withdraw an officer’s license if they do not cooperate with an investigation. Shepherd’s certification was revoked May 9, records show.

Nikki Richardson, co-founder of Justice for Wyandotte, said the organization was aware of the January 2023 incident.

“Justice for Wyandotte has continued to affirm that KCKPD should continually be held accountable, especially at any point in time where a law enforcement officer isn’t fit to police,” she said.

Richardson said she believed the revocation by CPOST was the appropriate response.

“I would hate for the police officer to leave here and go somewhere else and equally do damage,” she said.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. source

A bizarre cop call leaves a Black Kansas City, Kansas, family wondering if a police officer was “high” on-the-job.

In a video trending on social media, a white Kansas City cop is seen blinking incessantly, shaking, slurring his words, and being unstable while responding to a call.

“You brought a high cop to my house,” Charles Guy yells in the video.

Guy recorded the video on Jan. 6 showing the officer identifying himself as “Officer Shepherd,” who then provided his badge number 2075.Guy told the Kansas City Defender he was having a custody dispute involving his son and wife. Kansas City police were then called to the home.

“I had my son for a couple of hours,” Guy said. “We came back home, and those cops had been inside of my house,” he added.

“That cop admitted on camera that they had already gone into my home,” Guy said.

In Guy’s video, Shepherd can be heard saying the phrase, “if we can’t find anybody, we’re going in” although not everything is clear because some of his speech was unintelligible.

As Guy engages with Shepherd and the second officer, who appears fully coherent, he asks for a sergeant. Meanwhile, Shepherd continues behaving and speaking strangely.

“You’re high as s—t, dude,” Guy said.

“You know for a fact this man is under the influence of something,” Guy said to the other officer.

“If I held my finger up and told you to follow my finger, could you do it?” Guy asked Shepherd. Shepherd responded to the question with another unintelligible response.

Shepherd is then seen continuing to shake and blink his eyes continually, all while leaning against the wall for support.“His teeth were grinding. His eyes were going all over the place. His foot was f—–g twitching it was looking like a jackrabbit. He would close his eyes and go to sleep leaning against the wall,” Guy described.

The posted video is about two minutes, but Guy shared his concerns with the sergeant.

“I told the sergeant I feared for my life. I was scared of the cop being there because he looked clearly intoxicated in some way, and he was wielding a deadly weapon,” Guy said.

Since the incident, Kansas City Police responded on its Facebook page.

“One of the officers appears to be exhibiting concerning behavior,” police wrote.

Police said once they learned of the incident, they launched an internal investigation and placed Shepherd on administrative leave. They said the investigation includes a “fit-for-duty evaluation that consists of a comprehensive medical and physical assessment and drug screening.”

Police also said, “preliminary information indicates that a medical condition may have been a factor in the officer’s appearance.”

Atlanta Black Star reached out to the Kansas City Police Department with additional questions regarding the concerning video. Nancy Chartrand, a spokesperson for the police department, directed us to its Facebook statement. She also confirmed its internal affairs investigation is still ongoing.

Chartrand did not reveal details on if Shepherd had any prior incidents citing his private personnel file. She also said no incident reports were written regarding the incident captured on video.

Social media users chimed in, questioning the police handling of officer Shepherd’s situation.

“Flip the script. If a citizen was behaving this way, the cops would assume they were high AF also and the citizen would be arrested,” Justin Peripheral said on Facebook.

Strong and stoic, a Cal Fire captain fought wildland fires and helped retrieve the bodies of despondent people who had jumped off a remote bridge. When the bridge beckoned him, he couldn’t keep fighting.

He was Superman. A skilled surfer, skateboarder and hockey defenseman. A leader much admired and sometimes resented. He was hard-charging, driven by the motto of his unit: “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.”

Cal Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell was the embodiment of the heroic archetype: 6–foot-4, strong and stoic, brave in the face of danger, the last person anyone expected to take his own life.

Until he did.

On that bright November morning, Mitchell cleared up the paperwork at the end of his shift, locked the bay doors at Station 20 in El Cajon and set out to put an end to his pain.

He drove half an hour through picturesque rolling hills to a remote bridge in San Diego County and pulled off to the side of the road. Nearby, large public-service signs urged anyone considering suicide to call a toll-free number.

Mitchell got out of his car, walked onto the Pine Valley Creek Bridge and stepped off the 440-foot-high span. He was 35 years old.

One of many

It was 2017, and Mitchell was one of at least 117 firefighters across the country who took their own lives that year, according to the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance, the only national organization that tracks such figures.

Although there are ample anecdotal stories about suicides among California firefighters, there is no data detailing the scope of the problem at Cal Fire. National data also is sparse, but suicides appears to be increasing nationwide: The alliance has verified 1,750 firefighter suicides since 1880, with 95% of the deaths occurring between 2000 and 2022. Jeff Dill, a retired fire chief who founded the alliance, estimates that only about a third of firefighter suicides are identified because of the social stigma and code of silence.

The statistics paint a grim picture: Desperate firefighters turn guns on themselves or drive into trees. One jammed a stick of dynamite in his mouth and lit the fuse. Some set themselves on fire.

Tony Martinez, a Cal Fire captain in Napa County, said many coworkers have committed suicide — or attempted to, some multiple times.

“I can’t tell you how many coworkers and longtime friends have killed themselves, and four times as many have attempted it in the last few years. Three co-workers in Cal Fire died last week. Died by suicide,” Martinez said.

Finding Ryan

Cell phones began buzzing around 11 a.m. on that Sunday, when many of Mitchell’s family members and friends were at church. A phone tree began heating up with the same urgent question: “Have you heard from Ryan?”

Tony Mecham, Mitchell’s battalion chief in El Cajon, was driving back from a family emergency and left strict instructions not to be bothered. When he received two calls in five minutes, he knew it was something serious. His duty chief reached him while he was driving with his wife on a freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

“I don’t know how to tell you this, but Ryan Mitchell just jumped off the Pine Valley Bridge,” the chief told Mecham.

“I remember it as clear as day,” Mecham said. “I tried to catch my breath. I pulled over, and as my wife drove, I got on the phone and started making calls.”

The 911 calls did not identify the jumper. But once it became clear that a Cal Fire captain was involved, the tenor of the emergency response changed. In terse, tight communications, the region’s first responders moved swiftly to recover the body of a brother in uniform.

A Cal Fire division chief who knew Mitchell’s parents was dispatched to locate them; another was sent to notify Mitchell’s estranged wife, who had been looking for him when he failed to pick up his 16-month-old son. A sheriff’s deputy met Mitchell’s parents at their church.

Mecham began to manage the emotional fallout he knew was coming. It was the worst possible scenario: Mitchell’s own workmates responded to the 911 call from a citizen reporting his suicide. The crew sent to the scene had recognized Mitchell’s vehicle, a distinctive, beat-up station wagon he used when he went surfing.

Commanders took Mitchell’s fire station out of service for the day and instructed other battalion chiefs to visit every station to break the news. Local fire crews covered for Cal Fire that day.

The San Diego County Sheriff and California Highway Patrol let Cal Fire know they would handle the operation. Mecham wanted his people at the scene, but he didn’t want them to have to retrieve their co-worker’s body.

A team hiked into the rugged canyon underneath the bridge and hoisted Mitchell’s body out in a rescue litter. Everyone on the bridge — now teeming with all manner of uniformed personnel from multiple agencies — saluted as the body was placed on a stretcher and draped with an American flag.

Following Cal Fire tradition, a colleague’s body is escorted at all times during its journey to its final resting place. From the bridge, a procession of emergency vehicles accompanied Mitchell in the coroner’s van, along with a CHP vanguard. A Cal Fire honor guard was at the medical examiner’s office to receive him, and stood watch in shifts until the funeral.

People will tell you that time is elastic in moments of extreme distress. Information is being dispatched, the words are speeding by and you can’t keep up or remember. And the day seems like it’s on repeat, moving slowly and never-ending. In some Cal Fire stations, firefighters wept, some punched their grief into walls and some went home, not knowing what to do with themselves.

Ernie Marugg, a battalion chief in San Diego County who mentored Mitchell, had just left church when he heard the radio call. He took both of his stations in the area out of service and “self-dispatched” to the scene. He considered hiking into the canyon but instead waited on the bridge. “I didn’t want to see him like that, but I didn’t want to leave my boy out there.”

It was Marugg who pushed the gurney with Mitchell’s body into the morgue.

Colleagues began piecing together the day, struggling to construct a timeline as if the assembly of facts might help them understand why Mitchell took his life.

A fellow firefighter walked up to Ryan Mitchell and said, “Hey, buddy, everything alright?” Mitchell told him his car was overheating. “I’m all good,” he said.

A tragic detail emerged of Mitchell’s last moments: A federal battalion chief who knew Mitchell — his unit was based in the same station — was driving by that morning and saw Mitchell sitting quietly in his car by the bridge.

The firefighter pulled over, walked to Mitchell and said, “Hey, buddy, everything alright?” according to Mitchell’s best friend, Battalion Chief Patrick Walker.

Mitchell told him his car was overheating and he was just waiting for it to cool. “I’m all good,” he said, Walker said. The firefighter went on his way, waving.

Sometime after that, Mitchell stepped into air.

Trying to unlock Ryan’s mind

No one knows what set Ryan Mitchell — who had fought dozens of wildland fires throughout the state during his 12 years of service — on his downward spiral. The disintegration of his marriage, too much firefighting and too little sleep — the same problems documented by his colleagues. The struggle to never show weakness and the imperative to save everyone. It could have been all of it — or none of it.

Mitchell dreamed of shifting to aviation, the elite corps of firefighting. When he failed to get accepted into Cal Fire’s program, it was deeply disappointing, and angered him. One of his supervisors said the rejection “broke him.” Mitchell told friends he’d been stressing about his marriage, too.

Denial claims no exclusivity. Mitchell’s friends and family believed his brave front. Through it all, he confided in few people, and even fewer understood the depth of the pain and blankness that he felt.

Mitchell was in Marugg’s office one day and the battalion chief suggested counseling. When Mitchell said he had seen someone and that he was fine, Marugg believed him. It was a month or two before Mitchell died.

“He didn’t offer me a whole lot,” Marugg said. “If he saw the therapist more than two times, I would be surprised. He said everything was back on track. I thought he was getting better.”

Suicide has a stealthy manner, often hiding in plain sight. No one had a clue about Mitchell’s plan to kill himself until he did, and then they thought they saw clues scattered everywhere.

Clinicians often can’t pinpoint the moment, the nudge or push that takes a person from maintaining to can’t-take-it-anymore. There’s no diagnostic template for suicide.

Sometimes it’s a trigger that releases awful memories: The fire captain who responded to a child drowning who lost his own child to drowning. It can be a single, horrific incident: The fire boss who heard the screams of burning colleagues, unable to get to them.

Or it can be the accumulation of a career’s-worth of death, destruction and irreparable wounds. By the time a firefighter reaches that tipping point, trauma has seeped into deep places and is difficult to dredge out.

It can be a single, horrific incident. Or it can be the accumulation of a career’s-worth of death, destruction and irreparable wounds.

The onset of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression can go unnoticed, becoming so much a part of person’s psyche that dark thoughts become the norm, said Sidra Goldman-Mellor, who studies depression and suicide at University of California, Merced.

“People don’t have the language. People don’t recognize that how they are feeling now is not how they always felt. It seems normal to them,” she said.

In California, the mythmaking around wildland firefighting has a century of unvarnished heroism behind it. But human heroes, like Mitchell, have their limits.

“It’s a form of cultural brainwashing,” Dill said. “ You put this uniform on, you act a certain way, you are brave and courageous. ‘We give help, we don’t ask for help.’ The problem with firefighters is we believe our own myths.”

Walker remembers seeing some worrisome signs. He had been concerned about his young friend and colleague for some time. He spoke to Mitchell in the days before his suicide. and was taken aback by how quiet he was: The captain not only didn’t talk about his problems, he didn’t talk much at all.

Yet everything about Mitchell’s suicide showed evidence of deliberation, choosing a spot he knew, a bridge in the remote mountains east of San Diego — one of the highest in the nation — that is frequently the scene of suicides, Walker said. “It was purposeful,” he said. “He had picked up dead bodies from Pine Valley before, and thought, ‘That’s a sure thing.’“

Then there was a photo he posted on Facebook a year before he took his life: It depicted a firefighter in full gear holding a gun to his head.

William Mitchell, shown at his home in Lakeside, California, became a fire chaplain serving Cal Fire after his son, Cal Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell, took his own life.
Even his father, his clone in many ways, didn’t see the desperation in a grown man’s fatigue and emptiness, only the brave boy he raised.

“Ryan wasn’t the kind of guy to have those kinds of issues. He was an unmitigated hard-ass,” Will Mitchell said. “He was a hard-charger in the department, and the department doesn’t tell hard-chargers to slow down. Ryan found his breaking point, it was too much, too hard, too fast.”

Will Mitchell visited his son not long before his death. “He did not look well at that time, he looked gaunt. He was cooked,” Mitchell said. The captain had taken a shift for another firefighter who he deemed too tired to work any longer. Then he went to his home station and worked another three-day shift. “We never saw him again.”

Gone was the man Will Mitchell competed against on surf breaks in Mexico and El Salvador. The agile skateboarder. The kid in the backseat on the way to ice hockey tournaments. The commanding officer who pushed “his guys” in physical training nearly as hard as he pushed himself.

A photograph of Ryan Mitchell when he was between 4 and 5 years old is displayed in the living room of his parents, William and Leslie Mitchell.
Mitchell left behind a wife and son, Aiden, a little towheaded beach kid who mirrors his parents’ sun-splashed good looks. The job — or life — ate away at the marriage, and the couple was separated at the time of Mitchell’s death.

Through the family, his wife, Denelle Mitchell, declined an interview. But she told a television station two years after Ryan’s death that she could see the toll firefighting was taking on him.

“The fire seasons were getting longer and harder,” she said. “There’s days where as a firefighter wife, they come home and they just are so exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally drained.”

Now she raises money for suicide awareness.

Saying goodbye to Ryan

Mitchell’s suicide shook the Cal Fire family. His life was celebrated at a memorial service, with 1,500 in attendance, replete with the fire service’s elaborate rituals.

An honor guard stood at attention on a stage filled with emblems of Mitchell’s life: a surfboard, two hockey jerseys, beat up fire gear and helmets bearing his badge number, 4797. Bagpipers played “Amazing Grace” and firefighters wore their Class A dress uniforms with white gloves. And, finally, the 200-year-old tradition of ringing three bells, a firefighter’s “last alarm.”

Mecham, the battallion chief, spoke at the service, acknowledging the trauma and suicide directly.

“I have witnessed the sadness and anger that Ryan’s death has created,” he told the crowd. “Why did they not catch it, why did we miss it, why Ryan?

“People are looking for understanding for something we may never understand. The harsh reality is we will probably never know why. The Ryan Mitchell you all know and love did not take his own life. Ryan Mitchell’s disease took his life.”

“I don’t know what demons got ahold of my friend on that bridge. But I don’t want them to catch me.”

PATRICK WALKER, CAL FIRE BATTALION CHIEF AND MITCHELL’S BEST FRIEND

Mitchell’s family and other loved ones remain shattered. His father, a burly, no-nonsense building contractor, wears a rubber wristband memorializing Ryan’s life. Already an ordained minister, he was moved after his son’s death to become a chaplain for the fire service, but still struggles with his faith. “I’ve had a few knock-down, drag-outs with God, ” he said.

The cruelty of suicide is felt in its reverberations. Those who are left behind have forever to pose what-ifs and second-guess every small disagreement and overlooked wound — with no chance of making anything right.

“Ryan and my relationship was never perfect as a father and son,” Will Mitchell said. “We butted heads, we were at odds with each other. We didn’t speak to each other for periods of time, we were out of communication way too often.

“I relished the idea of making sure that all that garbage was forgiven and forgotten. I haven’t had the opportunity to do that. It’s a huge regret.”

The suicide of any firefighter prompts soul-searching among colleagues, especially among those who have battled their own troubling thoughts.
CARSON, Calif. – A Manhattan Beach Police Department motorcycle officer was killed Wednesday in a crash on the 405 Freeway in Carson.

The crash was reported about 5:15 a.m. at Del Amo Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A preliminary investigation revealed a speeding vehicle made an unsafe lane change and collided with another vehicle. That second vehicle then collided into the motorcycle officer, identified as 35-year-old Officer Chad Swanson, who was ejected from his motor, authorities said.

Swanson, a motor officer with the Manhattan Beach Police Department for the last 13 years, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

During a press conference, Lieutenant Kelly Benjamin said Swanson “loved riding his motor, but most importantly Chad loved his wife and three boys.”

“He had an infectious smile and was positive. He was a joy to work with, she added.

Probst, who was enjoying a morning bike ride on August 14, was struck from behind.

But it’s what the teens said next on the video that was disturbing.

“Yeah, hit his ass!” encouraged the passenger, who was recording the entire video.

The Hyundai can then be seen speeding up, and the sound of glass can be heard smashing, before Probst’s body rolls to the ground.

“Damn! That [n-word] got knocked out!” said the passenger as the driver is then heard flooring the gas. “We gotta get out of here!”

Probst was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

“He was honestly like a ray of sunshine,” Taylor Probst said of her father. “That just bled through your life.”

Footage shows teen driver appear to deliberately hit and kill retired police chief Andreas Probst

A retired California police chief appeared to be deliberately mowed down and killed while riding his bike in Las Vegas by a laughing teenage driver whose pal can be heard saying “Yeah, hit his ass,” video of the incident shows.

Andreas Probst, 64, was killed after he was deliberately struck while out for a morning bike ride around 6 a.m. on Aug. 14, according to Las Vegas police.

The unidentified 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai was arrested by police soon afterward, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

The teen has since been charged with murder, after police discovered a video posted to social media that allegedly showed him deliberately hitting the man.

This weekend, the shocking footage went viral online, showing the driver asking his pals “ready?” as the passenger films, laughing.

“Yeah, hit his ass,” he tells the driver before plowing into the retiree.

The disturbing clip begins with the passengers cursing at other cars as they speed by on the North Tenaya Way, near West Centennial Parkway.

The video shows the car approaching a man in red riding a bicycle on the side of the road from behind. With his friends’ encouragement, the driver pulls into the bike lane behind him, honks his horn, and deliberately smashes directly into his back tire with a loud bang, sending the cyclist flying.

The passenger films the man lying helplessly on the side of the road behind the vehicle.

“Damn that n—a got knocked out!” the passenger says as the driver can be heard stepping on the gas.

Probst was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to the Review Journal.

It’s not clear if the passenger who filmed the killing has been charged with any crime.

The 17-year-old was arrested the same day as the Probst’s death on suspicion of hit and run. He was later charged with murder because of the video, though the date the charges were set was not clear.

The car is then seen approaching a man, who is riding a bicycle on the side of the road. As his friends continue to encourage him, the driver takes the car in the bicycle lane, honks once, and deliberately rams the bicycle from behind, fatally hitting the cyclist. source
