LOS ANGELES – Three sheriff’s deputies who were members of the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail were killed following an explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East Los Angeles Friday morning, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion around 7:25 a.m. at the facility located in the 1000 block of Eastern Avenue, near the 710 Freeway.

The training center was evacuated and roads in the area were closed as the investigation continued. The impact of the explosion was so powerful it broke the windows of patrol cars in the parking lot.

The facility serves the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau and Arson/Explosives Detail.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the post-blast investigation and is being assisted by the ATF, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a news conference on Friday.

“There’s a lot more that we don’t know than what we do know. But our intent is to look at this from the very beginning and figure out what is it exactly that caused this tragic event,” Luna said.

While the official cause of the explosion is under investigation, preliminary information indicates this was a possible training accident.

It’s unclear what type of explosive materials were being handled by the deputies.

The deputies were identified as detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn. They were all assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail, according to the department.

Luna said the deputies had a combined 74 years of service between them at 19 years, 22 years and 33 years.

According to law enforcement, the deadly explosion may be linked to a Santa Monica apartment complex.

Officials say on Wednesday construction workers were installing EV chargers when they found grenades in a former tenant’s personal storage unit. The bomb squad was then called in. LASD officials say the grenades found at the apartment, located at 821 Bay Street, were related to today’s explosion. LASD homicide investigators were at the apartment Friday afternoon.

Santa Monica investigation tied to LASD explosion

Bomb squad investigators at a Santa Monica apartment building found what appeared to be grenades. The alleged grenades may be connected to the explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility that killed three deputies.

This is the largest loss of life for the LA County Sheriff’s Department since an ambush in 1857. In terms of explosives, in 1986 two LAPD bomb squad members were killed in an explosion in North Hollywood.

A procession was held around 5 p.m. Friday, transferring the deputies’ bodies from the training center to the medical examiner’s office. Dozens of sheriff’s deputies stood in formation and saluted as the bodies were carried to a trio of medical examiner vans.

What they’re saying:

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi was among the first federal officials to comment, saying on X that she had spoken with both Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna and U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli. She also confirmed that the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting with the investigation.

Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda L. Solis, Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn all expressed sorrow and support following the explosion. Solis said she was deeply saddened by the loss and is in contact with Sheriff Robert Luna. Barger also expressed sympathy and said her thoughts are with the department and victims’ families. Hahn called the deadly explosion “an extraordinarily painful day.”

LA Mayor Karen Bass said the city was supporting the tragic incident and that LAFD arson investigators and LAPD bomb squad personnel are assisting as needed.

“The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of these impacted by this blast,” the Mayor said on X.

Sen. Adam Schiff called the incident “an unbelievable tragedy” and added that he is “praying for the deputies’ families and every member of the sheriff’s office.”

Los Angeles-area U.S. Rep. Judy Chu said on X that she was “heartbroken by the tragic news of the explosion at the @LASDHQ training facility in Monterey Park that claimed the lives of three brave deputies.”

“I am monitoring the situation closely,” she wrote. My deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and fellow law enforcement officers mourning this unimaginable loss.

National security expert provides insight

What we know:

National security expert Hal Kempfer, who has worked previously with the LASD, called the situation “a horrific thing to see.”

“They are probably one of the best trained, most professional, special operations, law enforcement organizations in the country and the world,” he said. “So for something like this to happen, they’re gonna be looking at this very closely and trying to figure out what exactly occurred.”

Regarding the cause, Kempfer said it seems the deputies were transporting explosive materials when the incident occurred.

“It just tells me that probably they were transporting or storing something and something went horribly wrong,” he said. “Frankly, things do go wrong with demolitions. You take a lot of precautions and everything, but it’s dangerous work, dangerous training, dangerous business, and sometimes accidents do occur.”

Kempfer described the possible situation that may have unfolded.

“It would make sense that you’d have a driver and an assistant driver in a vehicle moving this, but because it is dangerous explosives, there may have been a couple of other deputies assigned to provide security in case anything happened along the way, and that might explain why you have four deputies involved,” he said.

“You know the driver sees things, but the assistant driver is an extra pair of eyes. And obviously with something like, you know, if you’re moving a load like this, you absolutely want to be extremely cautious about what you’re doing. So you need that extra set of eyes, but then of course, if anybody from the outside had knowledge that this was a load of explosives being moved, obviously that would make it a potential target for pilferage or worse. So you’d probably want some security as well. On the other hand, it could have been that they were moving to a range or something like that or moving to another facility. And it just happened that there were, you know, four deputies total because of whatever they were planning to do.”

As ar as the protocol goes, Kempfer said it all depends on the amount of explosives that are being moved.

“If you’re moving a few flashbangs, you’re not going to have four deputies needed for that,” he said. “But if you are moving a larger load of explosives, and it could be explosives that were tied to evidence, this could be a part of a seizure, and that would make sense to me if it was part of a seizure because a lot of times when you recover explosives from a crime scene, they’re not necessarily in as good a shape as the stuff that you would normally use. They may be less stable, they may be old, there may be a lot of problems,” he added.

Kempfer said it was “improbable, if not impossible” that the deputies did not know the materials were explosive or active.

“If this was something where someone had secretly planted explosives, that would be a different situation. It sounds like they were just simply moving explosive material and it sounds like a tragic accident,” he said. “Things just sometimes go horribly wrong with explosive materials.”

Explosion claimed lives of three veteran officers who had responded to Santa Monica call the day before

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has identified the three deputies killed in Friday’s training facility explosion at an East Los Angeles County training site.

The devastating explosion has been considered one of the agency’s deadliest internal tragedies in years.

The blast happened just after 7:30 a.m., claiming the lives of Deputies Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. All three men were assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail and were described as brave men who served with honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the community, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

“There are no words to express the pain and sorrow we feel,” said Sheriff Robert Luna. “These heroes represented the best of our Department, exemplifying courage, integrity, and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families, but for all of us.”

The fallen deputies had a combined 74 years of service, according to Luna.

The LASD released a statement Friday evening highlighting the service histories of the deputies and each showed a long record of dedication, specialized training, and service across high-risk assignments.

Detective Steven Kelley-Eklund joined LASD in 2006 but served at multiple facilities before becoming a Field Training Officer at South LA Station. Kelley-Elund was promoted to Detective with the Narcotics Bureau in 2016 and worked with major investigations and arrests. He became a certified Arson and Explosive Investigator in 2022. He is survived by his wife, Jessica, and their seven children.

Detective Victor Lemus began his career at LASD in 2003 where he served at Twin Towers and Century Station. Lemus reportedly excelled as a Senior Training Officer and Detective. He was also touted as a decorated Baker to Vegas runner and a K-9 handler.  He joined the Arson and Explosives Unit in 2023. He is survived by his wife, Detective Nancy Lemus, their three daughters, and several family members also serving with LASD.

Detective William Osborn served in patrol, investigations, and training roles across the county and graduated in 1992. He was purportedly a longtime detective with a deep passion for investigative work.  Osborn joined the Arson and Explosive Unit in 2019 and was well-known for being a mentor and his expertise. He was also a trusted leader in the bomb technician community.

LASD officials told Fox News Digital that the same deputies responded to a call Thursday at a complex in Santa Monica where they assisted the local police department in seizing explosives.

The incident is still under investigation, and it is unclear if the deputies were examining the explosives at the time of the blast.

LASD say homicide detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the Santa Monica location and “out of the abundance of caution,” the LAPD bomb squad, L.A. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Los Angeles will search the location for any potential explosive materials.

“At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today’s critical incident,” officials wrote in a statement to Fox Digital. “Santa Monica PD is assisting the Sheriff’s Department in this incident and have evacuated the residents in the complex. They are in the process of locating a shelter for displaced residents.”

Details regarding a memorial service for the deputies will be released soon, according to LASD.

CHP officer dies in Culver City crash after suspected ‘medical emergency’

34-year-old California Highway Patrol officer was killed in the line of duty after suffering a suspected “medical emergency” and then crashing his cruiser in Culver City Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. as Officer Miguel Cano and his partner were transporting a detainee on Bristol Parkway, north of Green Valley Circle, the CHP stated in a news release.

“For reasons still under investigation, Officer Cano lost control of the patrol vehicle, which left the roadway and struck a tree,” the CHP stated.

Emergency crews transported both officers to UCLA Medical Center. “Tragically, despite the lifesaving efforts of emergency personnel, Officer Cano was ultimately pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the CHP stated.

Cano’s partner suffered minor injuries in the crash. The person in custody also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey.

During a 10:30 a.m. news conference, CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said Cano appeared to have lost consciousness before the crash.

“We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cano, who gave his life while serving the people of California,” CHP Commissioner Duryee said. “His dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with his family and our CHP family during this incredibly difficult time.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Milwaukee police officer who was shot Thursday while responding to a call died three days later, the police department announced on Sunday.

Officer Kendall Corder, 32, died Sunday as a result of the injuries he suffered in the shooting. His partner was also shot but survived.

The two officers, both six-year veterans of the department, were responding to a call about a person with a weapon when they were both unexpectedly fired upon in an alley. The officers were not able to return fire, the police department said.

A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested but criminal charges have yet to be filed. The police department did not name the suspect.

“MPD is forever grateful for Officer Corder’s courage in the line of duty,” the police department said in a release announcing his death. “We grieve for his family, friends, loved ones, his partner, and every member of his MPD family whose hearts are shattered by his loss.”

Corder is the sixth Milwaukee police officer shot and killed since 2018.

Gov. Evers is also ordering flags across Wisconsin to fly at half-staff across the state immediately until sunset on Tuesday as well as the date of Officer Corder’s interment, which has not yet been announced. An executive order will be forthcoming. source

While Trump’s overall approval ratings remain underwater in most national polling, thanks to negative numbers on the economy, the visuals from Los Angeles shine a spotlight on the issues on which the president performs best – immigration and border security, and law and order.

“Images splashed across the media of Mexican flag-wielding rioters burning cars and assaulting police officers validate President Trump’s call for greater immigration enforcement and border control. Republican officials and committees are using the violence in Los Angeles as a cudgel to bash Democrats.

“If you look at what’s going on in L.A., it shows exactly what [former President] Biden and the Democrats did by opening their borders the way they did and allowing millions and millions and millions of people coming here unvetted. They’ve caused all this,” Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida claimed on Tuesday. “I think President Trump is doing what he said he was going to do on the campaign trail. He’s going to keep the country safe.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which is the campaign arm of the House GOP, charged that “While LA is burning and law enforcement is being attacked, radical House Democrats are ‘scoffing’ at any thought of condemning the violent riots. The party has completely lost their minds.”

Even first-term Sen. John Fetterman of California, who has increasingly bucked and criticized fellow Democrats, chastised his own party.

“I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that. This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement,” Fetterman argued in a social media post.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (Good Shepherd News) –– A 21-year-old Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in a crash in Santa Clarita has been identified.

Deputy Daniel V. Chavira died after a three-car collision Monday afternoon on San Francisquito Canyon Road.

Chavira, who was off duty at the time, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he later died.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own, who was taken from us far too soon,” said Sheriff Robert Luna. “Our Deputy dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, both in and out of uniform. His commitment to public safety was not just a job — it was who he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.”

“It’s tragic … any way you put it,” Luna added. “But the fact that he’s only 21 years old … incredible young man. We are so fortunate to have hired him. He was providing
excellent service here in the community, on and off duty.”

What we know about Deputy Daniel V. Chavira

Chavira comes from a law enforcement family and joined the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department on May 2, 2024.

He graduated from Academy Class 476 and was assigned to North County Correctional Facility.

Chavira is survived by his father, Rodrigo Valencia, his two brothers, Rodrigo Valencia and Deputy Rene Valencia-Chavira, who works at Lancaster Station, and his wife, Deputy Crystal Valencia, who works at San Fernando Court.

Chavira’s sister, Detective Nancy Alcaraz, and her husband, Deputy Martin Alcaraz, both work at the LASD Palmdale Station.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the deadly crash.

“Unfortunately, we lost one of our very young deputies in an off-duty traffic collision earlier today,” said Sheriff Luna in a video released by a local radio station. “He was transported to this hospital where, unfortunately, he fought valiantly, but lost his life.”

It’s unclear exactly how many other people were injured in the crash, but they were taken to the same hospital by ambulance.

LASD said they were reviewing the deputy’s work schedule and background to determine if he was possibly leaving or driving to work.

Hillsborough County deputies Carlos Brito, 39, and Manny Santos, 31, severely injured but expected to live

Two Florida sheriff’s deputies were seriously injured Thursday, when a man with a lengthy criminal history “intentionally” plowed his car into them in an ambush attack in which he was “determined to kill deputy sheriffs,” authorities said.

One of the injured deputies may possibly have his leg amputated as a result, Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister told reporters at the scene.

“These deputies never had a chance,” he said. “These deputies‘ lives are changed forever.”

Hillsborough County deputies were answering a 911 call from a woman who said her adult son was acting irrationally and violently and that she was afraid of him, Chronister said. The suspect, Ralph Bouzy, 28, was sitting in a running car outside his home in the Heather Lakes subdivision in the Tampa suburb of Brandon and took off when the deputies tried to make contact with him.

Bouzy returned a short time later, sped up and rammed the deputies, pinning them against a patrol vehicle, the sheriff said. Both suffered severe leg injuries but were expected to survive.

Video footage released by the sheriff’s office shows Bouzy’s vehicle driving on a residential street at a high speed toward the two deputies who were standing next to a sheriff’s cruiser.

They tried jumping out of the way just before Bouzy smashed into the police vehicle. After the crash, one of the deputies is seen on the ground while Bouzy gets out of his totaled vehicle and casually walks toward his home. He continued to ignore commands by two deputies, who both pointed Tasers at him.

He was tased seconds later and fell to the ground before being taken into custody.

“There is no other way to describe this other than an ambush,” Chronister said. “He chose today to use his car as a weapon. They didn’t have a chance to get out of the way.”

The two injured deputies were identified as Cpl. Carlos Brito, 39, and 31-year-old Deputy Manny Santos. A piece of Britos’ femur bone was stuck between both vehicles and his leg was in danger of having to be amputated, Chronister said. Santos also sustained a “bilateral break” leg injury.

They were both taken to Tampa General Hospital where Brito underwent surgery.

“You can imagine the type of pain they were in,” Chronister said.

19-year-old Zaid Gracia’s wish to become a police officer came true when he was made an honorary police officer of the Houston Police Department last December.

Zaid Garcia is a burn survivor. As a toddler, he was involved in a fire accident in which 80% of his body was burned when a candle fell and their house caught on fire. The accident blinded him permanently and he also lost both of his hands.

As a little boy, he had to endure many surgeries and faced great challenges over the years as he grew older. But the fighting spirit in him never dimmed or died, even once.

“It’s been a hard path, but I healed, I want to inspire people,” he said.

Garcia had dreamt of becoming a police officer since he was 10 years old but had never really believed that he would become one. However, it would take 9 more years for his wish to be fulfilled.

His dream finally comes true

When social media influencer, Isaiah Garza came across Garcia’s story, he was inspired and wanted to help him fulfill his dream. So he tracked him down.

Garza says, “His mental willpower is beautiful and it doesn’t stop him from wanting to be who he wants to be, everything he’s been through, he still stands tall, and he just is such a brave human being and so much courage.”

Garza, was able to get in touch with the Houston Police Department to help Garcia’s dream be fulfilled.

Garcia spent a day at the academy of HPD doing everything an officer would; learning to make a traffic stop, clearing a room and taking down a suspect, meeting a K9 officer, and at the shooting range.

Later, he also got the opportunity to address the cadets at the academy. Sharing his life’s story, he told them, “I ended up proving the doctors wrong, too, you know. They thought I could not make it, but here I am”.

Trainee officers and staff were left speechless, visibly emotional, and in awe by the courage and brave spirit of the teenager as he shared his story.

“You make our jobs worthwhile and rewarding and I’ll remember your testimony about wanting to be part of law enforcement for the rest of my life,” said a prosecutor who was teaching the class of cadets to Garcia.

“Everybody who’s come in contact and had the pleasure of meeting him today has left better than before they met him,” said one sergeant.

Garcia was also given a junior police officer uniform and a certificate by Chief Troy Finner, who stated that it was a great honor to bestow on Garcia an honorary officer of HPD.

Garcia wants to help people and has a bigger dream of becoming a motivational speaker someday. His journey has only begun and he hopes to inspire more people in the future.

“In some way, you can achieve your dream,” he said. “I may be different, but it doesn’t mean that it stops me.”

‘You make our jobs worthwhile’: Burn survivor inspires LEOs while serving as an officer for a day

The teen, who suffered burns to 80% of his body during a fire, got to experience being an officer while inspiring Houston PD members along the way.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — For 19-year-old Zaid Garcia, becoming a police officer has been a lifelong dream since he was 10 years old, but he always felt his dream might be out of reach.

“I told her, ‘Mom, I think I can do it,’” Garcia told KPRC News. “To be honest, I didn’t even believe it myself.”

His doubts stemmed from a life-changing accident when he was a young child living in Mexico.

Garcia suffered severe burns to more than 80% of his body, blinding him, and causing him to lose both hands, according to KPRC News. The serious injuries put him in a coma and resulted in many surgeries over the years.

“No one knows how but a candle fell, and when the candle fell, the house caught on fire,” he told KPRC.

When Los Angeles social media influencer Isaiah Garza heard about Garcia’s story and aspirations of becoming an officer, he tracked him down to make his dream become a reality.

“His mental willpower is beautiful and it doesn’t stop him from wanting to be who he wants to be,” Garcia told the news platform. “Everything he’s been through, he still stands tall, and he just is such a brave human being and so much courage.”

Garza contacted the Houston Police Department, and the teen spent a day at HPD’s Academy in North Houston doing everything an officer would: learning to make a traffic stop on the driver’s track, helping clear a room and take down a suspect, meeting a K-9 officer, and visiting the shooting range.

Garcia spoke to a group of cadets at the academy that day, telling them, “I ended up proving the doctors wrong, too, you know. They thought I could not make it, but here I am.”

A prosecutor who was teaching the class of cadets was touched by the teen’s story of perseverance and strength.

“You make our jobs worthwhile and rewarding and I’ll remember your testimony about wanting to be part of law enforcement for the rest of my life,” the prosecutor told Garcia during the class.

After receiving a junior police officer uniform and being presented with a certificate by Chief Troy Finner, Garcia proclaimed this day one of the best in his life.

The teenager lost both of his hands and five toes, and his eyes were so severely burned that surgeons covered them with skin to let them heal.

Zaid is hoping to get his sight back through surgery to have the layer of skin removed and his eye lids reconstructed.

He says the first thing he wants to see is his best friend Julia’s ‘beauty’ and his family.

A GoFundMe page was set up by non-profit organisation Special Books for Special Kidswith the initial goal of raising £50,000. 

But supporters turned out in droves and have so far raised £300,000 for the teenager.

Zaid said: ‘I’m sharing my story to inspire people and show them that miracles do exist.

‘They amputated both my hands and they took the fingers too. I have both my legs and feet.’

He added: ‘I have five toes on the left and on the right, I have one toe. I don’t walk normally. I don’t step flat.

‘The doctors shut my eyes under the skin. I don’t know why they didn’t just take them out – probably because they thought I would see in the future.

‘So my next hope is to get my vision back. I’ve been blind since the accident. If I was to have this surgery it would be the first time I’d see the world properly [since before the fire].

‘To be able to see my family again after 14 years will be good. I think it’ll be cool. The first thing I want to see would be one of my friends. My best friend from school, Julia. I’d like to see her beauty, I guess.’

After the incident, Zaid was flown from his former home in Mexico to a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, where he received the treatment for fourth degree burns, which ultimately saved his life.

When Zaid was released from hospital, his family settled in the US state, where he currently attends a school for the blind.

Zaid said: ‘It was hard growing up to be honest. People are scared of me because of the way I look and when I was young, I tried to commit suicide.

‘My mum told me that was not the right thing. I was finding it hard to fit in at school and make friends. I work hard to improve each day. I just want to be accepted.

‘When people meet my parents, my mum prepares them. She explains, “Hey, I have a child with disabilities.”

  

‘She prepares them. Of course, they get surprised, but [soon] they only care about my personality.

‘[When people meet me now], I hope that they think I’m interesting – that I’m easy to talk to. I like going out with friends and giving them time to talk with me if they need something.

‘I like to sing and sometimes I write songs or poems. I love art and playing around with pencils. I have other interests, and I hope people see that when they meet me.’

Zaid has overcome many obstacles throughout his life but remains hopeful for the future, when he plans to become a translator and motivational speaker.

He added: ‘I hope people will realise that you shouldn’t give up just because they tell you you’re not going to make it. I want to encourage people.

‘The doctors said I was going to die. There was no hope for me. They predicted that I would not be able to talk, but I’m a miracle because of that. I can say thank you in nine languages.

‘The most important thing for me is learning languages – Finish, Swedish, Danish, Chinese. In the future I want to be an interpreter and maybe a motivational speaker.

‘Spanish is my first language and I learnt English at school when I was just nine-years-old. I’m a sophomore this year. I’m working hard on my exams and I will probably go to college.

‘My parents say to me ‘be good’ when I go to school. They are very supportive and encourage me to carry on as if nothing happened.’

CARSON, Calif. – A Manhattan Beach Police Department motorcycle officer was killed Wednesday in a crash on the 405 Freeway in Carson.

The crash was reported about 5:15 a.m. at Del Amo Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A preliminary investigation revealed a speeding vehicle made an unsafe lane change and collided with another vehicle. That second vehicle then collided into the motorcycle officer, identified as 35-year-old Officer Chad Swanson, who was ejected from his motor, authorities said.

Swanson, a motor officer with the Manhattan Beach Police Department for the last 13 years, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

During a press conference, Lieutenant Kelly Benjamin said Swanson “loved riding his motor, but most importantly Chad loved his wife and three boys.”

“He had an infectious smile and was positive. He was a joy to work with, she added.

She noted that Swanson was in the crowd at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire on the crowd from a nearby hotel. Benjamin said Swanson helped get people and shooting victims out of the area.

“The entire Manhattan Beach community is mourning the loss of an officer who dedicated his career to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents,” Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery said in a statement.

“His fearless contributions to our community and beyond were marked by bravery, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to duty,” Montgomery said.

Swanson is survived by his wife, three boys, mother, and father.

One other person involved in the crash was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Police officer killed in crash on 405 Freeway

A Manhattan Beach Police Department motorcycle officer was killed today in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound 405 Freeway in the Carson area.

The crash was reported at about 5:15 a.m. at Del Amo Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Information was not immediately available on the identity of the officer, who died at a hospital, the CHP reported.

All northbound lanes were closed in the area while an investigation was conducted into the circumstances of the crash, and traffic was backed up for miles.

According to the CHP’s preliminary investigation:

• The crash that fatally injured the officer, who was believed to have been on duty, involved three other vehicles.

• One of those vehicles, which may have been speeding, made a lane change, hitting another vehicle that went out of control.

• The officer was knocked off the motorcycle by one of the vehicles.

• Another person was transported from the scene for treatment of minor injuries.

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the head while sitting in his patrol vehicle Saturday night, according to law enforcement sources.

The deputy was found “in medical distress” in front of the Palmdale station around 6 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department said in a social media post. Afterward, he was rushed to a Lancaster hospital in critical condition.

The shooting is being treated as a crime, a department official said.

Union leader Derek Hsieh — executive director of the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs — called the shooting an “ambush” and said it has sparked anger and sadness in the law enforcement community.

“It’s an outrage,” he said. “An ambush is a targeted attack against law enforcement and it sends a really clear message.”

He confirmed that the shot deputy is represented by the union and has multiple family members in law enforcement. Late Saturday night, he said that others in law enforcement had already begun reaching out in solidarity.

“I have received calls of support from other law enforcement agencies and an elected official who offered to use her own personal money if an award needs to be offered,” Hsieh said.

Supervisor Janice Hahn called the shooting “senseless and horrific” and said she had reached out to Sheriff Robert Luna.

30-year-old LA County sheriff’s deputy shot, killed in Palmdale ambush; suspect outstanding

PALMDALE, Calif. (KABC) — A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while in his patrol vehicle in what authorities described as an ambush in Palmdale. The shooter remained on the loose Sunday.

Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, a 30-year-old field training officer, was shot Saturday just outside the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station at the corner of Sierra Highway and Avenue Q.

Sheriff Robert Luna said a good Samaritan found the deputy unconscious inside the vehicle around 6 p.m.

Clinkunbroomer was quickly rushed to the Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster where he later died.

Overnight, a procession from the hospital briefly shut down local freeways as deputies escorted his remains to the L.A. County coroner.

Luna said Clinkunbroomer’s death is being investigated as a murder and is seeking the public’s help.

“We really need your help,” said Luna. “We need to get this guy off the street, guy or guys. He’s a public safety threat. He ambushed and killed, murdered, one of our deputies. We need your help to get him off the street.”

Though a description of the suspect or suspects wasn’t immediately available, Luna said he believes the shooting was captured on video.

“Homicide investigators are aware of a video that is circulating and are analyzing that video to determine if it is related to the murder of our deputy,” said Luna.

Who was Dep. Ryan Clinkunbroomer?

According to Luna, Clinkunbroomer was an eight-year veteran of the department and had been with the Palmdale station since July 2018.

He had been working as a field training officer for the past year and a half.

“Not just anybody becomes a field training officer, it’s usually the best of the best,” said Luna.

Clinkunbroomer apparently came from a law enforcement family. Luna said his grandfather and father both had worked for the L.A. sheriff’s department.

“Service was running through his veins … so unfair,” said Luna. “He embodied the values of bravery, selflessness and an absolute commitment to justice.”

Luna also said Clinkunbroomer had just celebrated his engagement about four days before he was killed.

“He was just starting his life,” said Luna.

Manhunt now underway

Luna said numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have offered their assistance in the investigation. However, he’s pushing the public to come forward, especially those people who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting.

“Somebody knows something,” said Luna.

When asked by a reporter if the shooting may have been a targeted attack, Luna noted the investigation is still in its early stages but said “nothing is off the table.”

“I think it was a targeted act, based on what we know now, but we’re still in the extremely early stages of this investigation,” he said.

Palmdale Mayor Laura Bettencourt also spoke to reporters and asked anyone with information to come forward. source

‘It’s an outrage’: L.A. County sheriff’s deputy killed in ambush outside Palmdale station

A Los Angeles County sheriff‘s deputy was ambushed and killed Saturday night, shot in the head by an unidentified attacker while sitting in his patrol cruiser stopped on the street in front of the Palmdale station.

Sheriff Robert Luna called it a “targeted act” and speculated that Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer may have been killed because he worked in law enforcement.

“Somebody decided to shoot and murder him, I’m assuming, at this point, because he was in uniform,” Luna said at the late-night news conference. He said the shooting occurred shortly after the deputy left the sheriff’s station.

Security video shared with The Times shows a black car pulling up behind the deputy’s cruiser and pausing. Seconds later, the black car pulls up a little farther, stops at the driver’s side of the cruiser and pauses again.

Then, the black car speeds off. The deputy’s vehicle drifts forward a foot or two and stops moving.

It’s not clear what circumstances led to the shooting, and authorities have not released any information about potential suspects.

A passerby found Clinkunbroomer unconscious in his vehicle at the intersection of Avenue Q and Sierra Highway around 6 p.m., officials said. The deputy was rushed to a Lancaster hospital in critical condition.

“Despite the medical staff’s best efforts to save our deputy’s life, regrettably he succumbed to his injuries,” Luna said.

Though Luna confirmed the incident may have been captured on surveillance video, he said that investigators are still analyzing the footage and are not releasing it at this time.

Clinkunbroomer, 30, joined the department eight years ago and came from a family of law enforcement.

“He’s third-generation,” Luna said. “His father served with us. His grandfather served with us. Service was running through his veins.”

He transferred to the Palmdale station in July 2018 and worked as a field training officer for 1½ years — a position that Luna said is usually reserved for the “best of the best.”

Four days before his death, the deputy had gotten engaged to be married, Luna said.

“Our hearts absolutely go out to his family,” he added.

Palmdale Mayor Laura Bettencourt called him a “hero” and vowed that the killer would be caught.

“The person that did that is a coward and they will be caught,” she said at the news conference.

L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn called the shooting “senseless and horrific.”

Supervisor Kathryn Barger in a statement mourned the loss and called for justice.

Luna stressed that authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding the shooter and encouraged witnesses to call homicide investigators at (323) 890-5500.

“We’re gonna catch the person who did this,” he said. “Somebody saw something. Somebody knows something.”

The Palmdale station put out its own tribute.

“Words cannot express the shock, sadness and anger over this senseless loss of an exemplary deputy and an even better human being. Deputy Clinkunbroomer strived for excellence in everything he did. He was very thorough in his investigations, genuinely cared for the community he served, and he was always willing to help out his partners any time they needed it. We are numb with grief and are grasping to come to terms with the fact that he has left a very big void within our station family,” the statement read.

“Ryan, we are so very sorry for your family and your fiance. Rest assured, we will do our very best to take care of them in your absence and make sure they know that they are ALWAYS a part of our family.”

Condolences and statements of solidarity poured in from other law enforcement agencies and organizations around the area Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

“Rest easy,” wrote the Ventura County Sheriff’s Foundation. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reiterated calls for help finding the person responsible for “this senseless act of violence.” The California Highway Patrol in Antelope Valley also offered condolences. “Our hearts and prayers are with you,” the agency wrote on Facebook. “Rest in Peace brother.”

Saturday’s shooting comes three years after two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were severely wounded when they were shot several times ambush-style while sitting in their parked patrol car in Compton. The suspect, who was caught on surveillance video, was later arrested.

In 2016, a veteran sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by a burglary suspect in neighboring Lancaster. The suspect was arrested shortly afterward. source

The ambush death of a third-generation Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, shot in his patrol car in front of the department’s Palmdale station — is drawing remorse and outrage while a manhunt is underway for the killer.

“Words cannot describe my immense sorrow for the tragic loss of a brave deputy’s life tonight,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement late Saturday after learning 30-year-old Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer had died after being shot earlier in the day.

“My heart breaks for his family, his fellow officers, and the community at large. There are a lot of unanswered questions — including who committed this heinous and brazen attack and why. Whoever is responsible must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and brought to swift justice.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced Clinkunbroomer’s death during a news conference at the City of Hope Antelope Valley, saying his father and grandfather had also been deputies and that the veteran deputy had become engaged just four days earlier.

“He didn’t deserve this,” Luna said “This is so unfair. We’re hurting because we lost somebody. It hurts bad. It sucks, just to put it bluntly. Our hearts absolutely go out to his family.”

Luna struggled to hold back his emotions while discussing what he described as a targeted ambush killing.

“He was just driving down the street,” Luna said. “And for no apparent reason — and we’re still looking into the specific reasons —somebody decided to shoot and murder him, I’m assuming at this point, because he was in uniform. That, to me, is sickening. That’s not who this community is and that’s why we stand up here collectively together really asking our community for your assistance as we move forward.”

Clinkunbroomer was “found in medical distress” in front of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station at about 6 p.m. Saturday when a Good Samaritan stopped to render aid.

“Thank god for this Good Samaritan,” Luna said, “somebody (who) chose not to just drive by.”

The wounded deputy was transported to Antelope Valley Medical Center in grave condition.

According to media reports, Clinkunbroomer was stopped in a patrol car at a red light when he was shot.

He was found in front of the station at Sierra Highway and East Avenue Q with a gunshot wound to the head.

Video from the scene showed a vehicle drive up behind the patrol car, then pull alongside momentarily before speeding away.

It was unclear whether this was the suspect, the Good Samaritan or someone else.

Shortly after 11 p.m., the department announced Clinkunbroomer had died.

“I want to let to our community know Deputy Clinkunbroomer left his family tonight to serve our community,” Luna said. “He laid everything on the line to serve us. He wore a uniform just like other @LASDHQ deputies wear, driving in a police car, and he was senselessly murdered tonight.

“From everything I know about Ryan, people absolutely loved and adored him. He wasn’t just one of our Deputy Sheriffs. He was a third-generation deputy. His father and grandfather served with us. Service was running through his veins. He embodied the values of bravery, selflessness and was committed to justice. Our deputy was a devoted family member and a cherished community member. He was cowardly shot while working tirelessly to serve our community this evening.

“Our hearts go out to his family. We cannot fully understand their pain, but we will stand with them in solidarity and support them during this difficult time. They deserve unwavering compassion, and we will do everything in our power to provide them with assistance and care.”

Luna said Clinkunbroomer was an eight-year veteran of the department and had been with the Palmdale station since July 2018. He served as a field training officer, which Luna said is a role reserved for only “the best of the best.”

Last week, Clinkunbroomer’s mother, Kim Etzel Clinkunbroomer, posted several photos of her son and his fiancé on Instagram with the message: “We are so excited to add to our family. Congrats to our son Ryan and his fiancé Brittany.”

During an overnight procession, law enforcement officers escorted Clinkunbroomer’s body to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

He is believed to be the first Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy to die in the line of duty since Oct. 5, 2016 when 29-year department veteran Sgt. Steve Owen, 53, of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station was shot and killed while investigating a reported break-in.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn was among those posting on social media in the hours after Clinkunbroomer’s shooting and death.

“The shooting of a @LASDHQ deputy in his patrol car in Palmdale today is senseless and horrific,” Hahn tweeted Saturday. “Tonight I’m praying for him, his friends, fellow deputies at @PalmdaleSheriff, and especially his loved ones.”

Other law enforcement agencies also offered their condolences.

“On behalf of @ChiefNisleit and the entire San Diego Police Department, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer and the entire Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during this heartbreaking time.”

Luna said homicide detectives were studying videos broadcast during local news reports that appear to show a vehicle drive up behind Clinkunbroomer’s patrol car. But he also implored anyone who has video or information to provide it to the department.

“We are utilizing every resource available to apprehend the suspect responsible for this heinous crime,” the sheriff said. “Somebody saw something. Somebody knows something. There is a family here at this hospital grieving an unimaginable loss. We need your help.”

Suspect arrested in the ambush killing of a newly engaged Los Angeles deputy. This is what the sheriff wants the public to know

After an hourslong standoff, a 29-year-old man suspected of gunning down a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was arrested Monday. But the reason behind the killing remains a mystery.

Kevin Cataneo Salazar is accused of ambushing and shooting Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, as the deputy waited at a red light in his patrol car Saturday, Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said.

Cataneo Salazar surrendered after deputies deployed chemical agents at his home Monday.

The sheriff has described the deputy’s killer as a “coward” who took Clinkunbroomer’s life “while he’s sitting at a red light, waiting to serve our community.”

Clinkunbroomer, who got engaged just four days before he was killed, was found fatally wounded by a civilian around 6 p.m. Saturday near his sheriff’s station in Palmdale, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles.

“He was murdered – ambushed – by a coward,” Luna said.

“Our deputy left this station in uniform to serve. And he was shot and killed. Why? We don’t know yet. But we intend to find out.”

Luna thanked the public for valuable information that led to Cataneo Salazar’s capture and praised his deputies for their hard work despite immense grief.

“I ask all of you … to continue to support our deputies here at the Palmdale station, Lancaster station right next door, and really all of law enforcement,” Luna said outside the slain deputy’s station.

“Our officers, our deputies go out and serve this community every day, putting their lives on the line. So we have a lot to be thankful for – that we have men and women who volunteered to do this, and families who kiss them goodbye and just pray that they come back home. And in this case, Ryan’s family will never see him again.”

More than a dozen other families of law enforcement officers are grieving the loss of their loved ones in ambush attacks this year.

There have been 83 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement in 2023, with 101 officers shot – 15 fatally, according to a report this month from the Fraternal Order of Police.

Saturday’s killing came three years after two Los Angeles deputies were shot ambush-style at a train station while sitting in their patrol vehicle.

Clinkunbroomer was a beloved member of the sheriff’s department and “was just starting his life,” Luna said.

The deputy’s father and grandfather both served in the sheriff’s department, Luna said.

“Service was running through his veins. He embodied the values of bravery, selflessness and was committed to justice,” Luna said in a Facebook post. “Our deputy was a devoted family member and a cherished community member.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna thanked the public and asked anyone with additional information to come forward.

The sheriff read a statement on behalf of Clinkunbroomer’s family members, who asked for privacy as they grieve.

“Our son Ryan was a dedicated, hardworking deputy sheriff who enjoyed working here at the Palmdale station,” the statement read in part.

“Ryan was recently engaged to the love of his life. As our firstborn son, Ryan will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the sheriff’s department as a whole.”

Even though a suspect is in custody, Luna said the investigation continues. He urged the public to provide any photos, video or information about the fatal ambush. source
