Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter elicited celebration from conservatives on Friday, particularly among those who felt the company’s former leadership unfairly censored conservative viewpoints. “I feel like a kid in a candy store,” tweeted Libs of TikTok, a popular right-wing Twitter account that has been suspended multiple times for violating the platform’s code of conduct.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted “FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!” from her professional Twitter account on Thursday evening, followed by “We are winning” on Friday morning.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) delivered a similar message, calling Musk’s acquisition of Twitter “one of the most significant developments for free

speech in modern times” during a Fox News television appearance on Thursday. “I’m glad he bought Twitter,” Cruz said. “I think that is tremendous that he fired the top executives.” Referring to Musk reportedly firing executives including Twitter’s CEO Parag Agrawal, Cruz added: “He needed to clean house at the top level, and simply allowing free speech is incredibly important.”

Musk, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” has suggested that he would loosen standards for the policing of harmful content such as misinformation and hate speech once he takes over. He has also voiced support for restoring access to former President Donald Trump, whose account was permanently suspended last year after the deadly Jan. 6 attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Speaking during a live interview with the Financial Times in May, he said he would reverse the “permaban” on Trump, calling the lifetime ban a “morally bad decision.”

“I think it’s very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech,” Musk said at a TED Talk in April. “Twitter has become kind of the de facto town square, so it’s just really important that people have … both the reality and the perception that they are able to speak freely within the bounds of the law.”

The platform has instituted a number of permanent suspensions in recent years to prominent accounts, including Greene’s personal account, which was suspended for repeatedly sharing misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. The Babylon Bee, a conservative satire site, also lost access after it published a transphobic humor piece. Media analysts say both accounts could return under Musk.

Musk acknowledged in a note to advertisers on Thursday before the deal was completed that “Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!” But as news of the deal closing spread on Friday, a number of Twitter accounts had posted racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic slurs, prompting concerns that a Musk-controlled platform would be littered with hateful content designed to offend and cause outrage.

Meanwhile, conservative media pundits claimed Musk’s takeover as a victory for their cause, particularly just weeks ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Ben Shapiro, founder of The Daily Wire, retweeted Musk with a meme of popping champagne, and tweeted, “We can only hope that other social media bosses (cc: Mark Zuckerberg) follow Musk’s lead.”

Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, says that Facebook will “almost certainly” reverse its ban on Trump if Twitter also makes the move. He adds that it could have major implications for the digital town square. “It’s basically giving Republicans a megaphone for the worst forms of election lies, which can inspire further doubt about democracy and even threats,” Carusone says. “And if they can target some of these local election races, they can be very disruptive.”

Trump himself applauded Twitter’s new ownership in a statement posted to TRUTH Social, his own social media platform, on Friday. “I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country,” Trump wrote. He began his message by touting TRUTH Social and claiming without any supporting evidence that it “had bigger numbers” last week “than all other platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and the rest.”

Although Trump has said he would not rejoin Twitter even if his lifetime ban were to be lifted, that didn’t stop some conservative politicians from celebrating the idea on Friday. “The bird is free, now free the GOAT,” tweeted Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), tagging @realdonaldtrump. The acronym stands for “greatest of all time.”

promptly firing several of Twitter’s top executives

Billionaire industrialist Elon Musk took over Twitter Thursday night and immediately fired several top executives, sending shockwaves throughout the social media platform.

CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and head of legal policy, trust, and safety Vijaya Gadde were all fired after Musk had accused them of misleading him and investors over the number of fake accounts on the platform, a source with knowledge of the matter told FOX Business.

Editor-in-chief of The Federalist Mollie Hemingway described the firings as “An excellent start” to Musk’s tenure in a tweet.

Co-Host of Breaking Points Saagar Enjeti posted emoji hands waving “bye” while retweeting a post of his from April where he had written that, “Vijaya Gadde, the top censorship advocate at Twitter who famously gaslit the world on Joe Rogan’s podcast and censored the Hunter Biden laptop story, is very upset about the @elonmusk takeover.”

Recently ousted CNN host Brian Stelter retweeted a post from Musk from April asking if Twitter was a dying platform. Stelter wrote, “What a long strange trip it’s been.”

But several others were very upset at the news. Techdirt writer/editor Mike Masnick shared a different opinion about Gadde, claiming, “People do not realize how much @vijaya did for free speech. Twitter is less of a free speech platform without her.”

Uproxx writer Mike Redmond wrote, “I don’t think any of us are prepared for how quickly this whole site is about to go down. It’s a miracle flames aren’t shooting out of it already.”

“Yay, manbaby with poor impulse control and edgelord tendencies has the helm. Sweet,” tweeted writer Dylan Reeve.

“I would be so happy if I’m wrong. But the [sic] all the red lights are flashing here,” warned NBC News “disinformation” reporter Ben Collins.

Controversial tech columnist Taylor Lorenz tweeted, “It’s like the gates of hell opened on this site tonight.”

Liberal academic and journalism professor Jeff Jarvis’ reaction upon hearing the news was, “The sun is dark.” Earlier in the day, he had warned, “This is an emergency! Twitter is to be taken over by the evil Sith lord.”

Jarvis is no stranger to Twitter hyperbole. In April when Musk’s plans to acquire Twitter first became part of the news cycle, he tweeted, “Today on Twitter feels like the last evening in a Berlin nightclub at the twilight of Weimar Germany.”

Others in media expressed more general outrage about Twitter’s change in leadership before the news was official, claiming that the platform would suffer, with some even threatening to leave it altogether.

Forbes sustainability senior contributor Dave Vetter tweeted, “After Elon has demolished Twitter, where will you go? Ideas below, please.”

He later responded to another commentator by clarifying that “I’m not leaving until the platform becomes essentially unusable or until I’m banned, whichever comes first. But if he does what he says he wants to do, I don’t see how Twitter will continue to function.”

In a now-deleted tweet, liberal journalist Molly Jong-Fast asked, “Can someone make a new Twitter or is this a very stupid question?”

Disgraced CBS anchor Dan Rather used famous lyrics by punk band The Clash to express wariness about Twitter’s future as a platform, writing, “With this Twitter thing maybe changing considerably. a question I am asking: Should I stay or should I go now? If I go, there will be trouble And if I stay it will be double So come on and let me know Should I stay or should I go?”

Noah Berlatsky, a journalist who has written for NBC Think and The Atlantic, responded to what he called an “extremely silly” tweet comparing people threatening to quit Twitter to those who had pledged to move to Canada when Trump won.

“Moving to canada requires a major logistical and financial difficulties. leaving twitter requires you to click a button,” he tweeted. “a huge number of people will leave this platform instantly, because Musk is really controversial and disliked.”

Berlatsky said later in his thread that “musk literally bought the company to troll people and target a big percentage of his user base. so yeah, a lot of those people will leave.”

Even as they predicted doom, many vowed to stay on the platform despite its change in leadership but promoted themselves on other platforms.

Podcaster and author Sarah Kendzior appeared to suggest that Twitter will become a “hellscape” under Musk’s new leadership.

“I’m not planning on leaving Twitter any more than I plan on leaving Missouri. I’m used to navigating a hellscape and finding the beauty that remains,” she wrote, while asking “those leaving” to subscribe to her podcast and Patreon.

MSNBC and NBC writer Joyce Alene tweeted that she would not leave the platform, but offered followers “concerned about what the future may look like here on Twitter” an alternate means of keeping tabs on her work. She wrote, “So, just to be clear. I’m not leaving Twitter. But I’m that girl, who always likes to have an alternative way to stay in touch with friends just in case.”

Lorenz similarly plugged her Substack “before Twitter implodes,” asking people to subscribe “to keep in touch if twitter falls off!!!!”

Jarvis declared he wouldn’t leave the platform and urged others to “stay and fight.” He tweeted, “I’m not leaving Twitter. Can’t get rid of me that easily, Elon. But I fear friends will leave town & we will lose touch. I hope not. Please stay. Fight for the weird little world we’ve built until @rabble & @arcalinea & their allies can build a new world that can’t be bought.”

Former Huffington Post writer Michael Hobbes retweeted a commenter who claimed, “Most of the major social networks are now inside the bubble: Facebook and YouTube are absolutely dominated by right-wing stories and voices. And now Twitter is under the total private control of a Thiel/Trump/Putin ally.”

Hobbes added a somber take of his own, saying, “I’m finding it pretty hard to make jokes about Elon buying Twitter. Nearly every American media institution is now openly right-wing or obsessed with giving reactionaries the benefit of the doubt. What’s the case for optimism about the next decade at this point?”

Not all commentators lamented the change in leadership, however.

LibsofTikTok appeared to joke that now the tables have turned, and Musk is the one who can hold left-wing accounts for misinformation, or in this case, failing to update their bios quickly enough.

“Hey @elonmusk, Parag is spreading misinformation in his Twitter bio and pretending he’s the CEO of your company,” the account tweeted.

Editor-in-chief Kyle Mann of political satire website The Babylon Bee made a video portraying a man in “Twitter jail” lamenting the living conditions until he was busted out by Elon Musk. “[A]ctual footage of @thebabylonbee in twitter jail,” he tweeted.

  “As a result, I am offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter and a 38% premium over the day before my investment was publicly announced,” he wrote. “My offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder.”

  Musk tapped Morgan Stanley as a financial advisor, according to the filing.

  He claimed later on Thursday during a talk at TED2022 that he isn’t interested in acquiring Twitter to make money off it and even said he’s not sure if he’ll even be able to buy the company.

  “This is not a way to sort of make money… it’s just that I think my strong, intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive, is extremely important to the future of civilization,” Musk said at TED2022. “But yeah, I don’t care about the economics at all.”

  He also said during the talk that he would try to retain as many shareholders as possible for a private company.

  The news comes just days after Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal warned investors of “distractions ahead.”

  “The Twitter Board of Directors will carefully review the proposal to determine the course of action that it believes is in the best interest of the Company and all Twitter stockholders,” the company said in a statement Thursday in response to the offer. CNBC’s David Faber reported on “Squawk on the Street” that Twitter’s board will meet at 10 a.m. to evaluate the bid, per people familiar.

  Musk first disclosed his stake in the social media giant on April 4. He later landed a seat on the company’s board of directors before reversing those plans.

  The Tesla CEO has previously criticized the social media giant publicly, polling people on Twitter last month about whether the company abides by free speech principles. He also said he was considering building a new social media platform.

  Shares of Twitter have seesawed in recent weeks amid the news from Musk, but are up 6% this year and 18.5% since the start of the month.

Twitter leftists lose it after Elon Musk offers to buy the social media giant: ‘I am frightened’

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s offer to buy Twitter Thursday elicited strong negative reactions from a certain segment of users of the social media giant, with some expressing fear about the impact his purchase could have on society, some threatening to leave the platform altogether, and others calling on billionaires to be abolished.

“I made an offer,” Musk announced on Twitter, including a link to the SEC filing detailing his offer to buy the company for $54.40 per share or $41 billion dollars.

The offer came following days of speculation as to what action Musk was planning after news he had become Twitter’s largest shareholder earlier this month with a purchase of 9.2% of company shares and declined a subsequent offer to join Twitter’s board.

Critics let loose following the revelations of Musk’s offer.

“I am frightened by the impact on society and politics if Elon Musk acquires Twitter. He seems to believe that on social media anything goes. For democracy to survive, we need more content moderation, not less,” liberal columnist Max Boot wrote, while venture capitalist Fred Wilson claimed Twitter was “too important to be owned and controlled by a single person.”

“Elon Musk is why to abolish billionaires. Asking them to chip in their fair share isn’t enough. Regulating them isn’t enough. When people are allowed to acquire this much concentrated influence, they will inevitably manspread economic power into every other form of power,” wrote MSNBC analyst Anand Giridharadas.

A number of users threatened to delete their Twitter accounts if Musk’s offer was accepted, including CEO of the Center for Employment Justice and former Democrat congressional candidate Pam Keith who wrote, “I love you all, but I am 100% OUT if Musk takes overt (sic) Twitter.”

Former assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York Richard Signorelli claimed Musk was “getting on my nerves” and implored Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal to reject the offer “for the good of the long term interests of Twitter & democracy.”

Musk suggested in his SEC filing that if his offer is not accepted, he might sell his stake in the company, which some have suggested could lead to damaging effects on the share price.

If Musk’s offer is accepted, a number of changes could be in store for the liberal company considering Musk’s expressed lack of “confidence in management,” as well as his desire to take the company private.
