Tamara De Treaux, Pat Bilon, and Matthew DeMeritt. were in the E.T. suit at different times in the production

Several people played E.T. in the movie “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. While the main E.T. was a mechanical puppet created by Carlo Rambaldi, actors also wore the suit in various scenes. Pat Bilon and Matthew DeMeritt, who was born without legs, were the primary actors who physically portrayed E.T. 

A team of puppeteers controlled E.T.’s face with animatronics. Two little people, Tamara De Treaux and Pat Bilon, as well as 12-year-old Matthew DeMeritt, who was born without legs, took turns wearing the costume, depending on what scene was being filmed.

Matthew DeMeritt a 12 year old disabled boy born with no legs.  Matthew De Meritt is best known for his role as E.T in the blockbuster sci-fi film E.T The Extra-Terrestrial (1982). He was born without legs and used his hands to walk.

 
He was a pre-teen while appearing as E.T. He was put inside the E.T. suit and moved for E.T. in most of the scenes where E.T. gets into the kitchen and falls over drunk. Another person operated the arms.
