All vehicles parked illegally in posted locations within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone will be towed by the city, Humphrey said. The LAFD will reevaluate weather conditions on Sunday to determine if the Red Flag Alert will be extended.

The windy conditions are expected to primarily affect the northern portion of Los Angeles County, enveloping the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, along with the Malibu coast, Santa Monica Mountains, Calabasas, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeway corridors.

Red flag warnings indicating critical fire danger conditions will be in place for those areas from 3 a.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Monday.

“The onset of Santa Ana winds will bring rapid drying to the region late Saturday night, with widespread single-digit humidities Sunday into Monday,” according to the National Weather Service. “The strongest Santa Ana winds are expected Sunday, when gusts of 35 to 50 mph will be common, except gusts of 50 to 65 mph likely in the Los Angeles county mountains, Santa Susana mountains, western Santa Monicas, and wind-prone foothills. Dry and breezy offshore flow conditions will persist into Tuesday which may extend critical fire weather conditions across portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.”

Wind-prone coastal and valley areas, will experience winds ranging from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph.

The red flag warnings will be accompanied in most areas by high wind warnings.

In Orange County, high wind warnings will be in place from 11 p.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Monday in the Santa Ana Mountains and foothills and inland areas, with 20 to 30 mph winds anticipated and isolated gusts of up to 70 mph. OC coastal areas will be under a less-severe wind advisory, with winds gusting up to 45 mph.

The combination of gusting winds and dry conditions across most of L.A. County will raise the risk of wildfires.

“If fire ignition occurs, there could be rapid spread of wildfire that would lead to a threat of life and property,” according to the NWS.

Firefighters asked residents and visitors to:

— Report immediately to 911 any smoke or flames without firefighters present;

— Use extreme caution when operating any spark, flame or heat producing equipment in grass or brush areas;

— Access real-time LAFD alerts and subscribe to the free NotifyLA system to assure you receive official messaging;

— Have an evacuation plan that includes at least two exit routes from your area;

— Follow the orders of uniformed public safety officials, and if told to evacuate, to do so immediately, and;

— Report any suspicious or criminal activity to law enforcement.

Southern California Edison officials said the utility has begun reaching out to customers and public safety agencies about the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs, in which power is cut in areas being battered by heavy winds that could damage electrical lines or equipment and spark wildfires.

According to Edison, roughly 150,240 of the utility’s 5 million customers are being notified that they are within areas that could potentially be impacted by the power cuts.

Edison offered a series of safety and preparation tips for residents:

— Check emergency supplies and have a battery-operated radio, flashlight and fresh batteries handy.

— Secure any temporary structures in backyards or businesses, including backyard furniture and tents, patio equipment and covers used in commercial settings.

— Do not touch downed power lines, but call 911 immediately.

— Don’t try to remove a broken tree limb or branch that has come in contact with a power line.

— At intersections where traffic signals are out, the crossings should be treated by motorists as four-way stops.

— If a power line falls on a vehicle, remain inside the vehicle and call 911.

— Use flashlights at home rather than candles to reduce fire danger.

— For people who use a generator, place it outdoors and plug individual appliances directly into it, using a heavy-duty extension cord.

— Do not use any equipment inside that is designed for outdoor heating or cooking, due to possible emission of carbon monoxide and other toxic gases. source

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has issued a citywide Red Flag Alert due to expected high winds and dry weather, increasing fire risk in Los Angeles. The alert includes temporary parking restrictions in certain areas, starting at 8:00 AM PDT on Sunday, October 29, 2023, for a minimum of 24 hours. This alert applies especially to the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The city will tow illegally parked vehicles in these zones.

Residents can check the status of the parking restrictions and if their address is affected on the designated website. The LAFD will review the weather conditions on Sunday to determine if the Red Flag Alert needs to be extended. The department highlights the importance of public cooperation in following the alert and its restrictions.

The LAFD urges residents and visitors to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to 911, especially if no firefighters are present. People are also advised to be careful when using equipment that can produce sparks, flames, or heat in grass or brush areas.

Everyone is encouraged to subscribe to the free NotifyLA system for real-time LAFD ALERTS and official messages. It is also recommended to have an evacuation plan with at least two exit routes from their area.

Finally, the department advises residents to promptly follow the instructions of uniformed public safety officials. If an evacuation order is given, residents should comply immediately. Any suspicious or criminal activities should be reported to the police. source

RED FLAG RESTRICTED PARKING PROGRAM

RED FLAG INSTRUCTION: In an attempt to increase public safety, the Fire Department and Department of Transportation have created a program to remove illegally parked vehicles in posted locations within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. This program was implemented with the assistance of the City Council to remove vehicles that create a hazardous condition on Red Flag Days. Station Commanders were asked to survey their district and identify critical areas where parked vehicles could delay citizens trying to evacuate and fire companies attempting to gain access during a Brush Incident. Station Commanders were asked to identify areas such as very narrow roads, hairpin turns, tight curves, and key intersections that, if not cleared of vehicles, would create a choke point. These intersections were highlighted and given to the Department of Transportation. The Department of Transportation made 1700 new signs and posted them in these identified areas, since January 1, 2006.

The goal of this program is to educate the public on the potential hazards associated with a fast-moving brush fire, and the importance of keeping roadways clear and traffic moving. The fire service has learned from incidents such as the Oakland Hills fire and the Cedar fire that citizens becoming trapped in their vehicles, while evacuating, can lead to a catastrophic situation.

Evidence of Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction by fire and brimstone (sulfur)

Sodom and Gomorrah are two cities mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Book of Genesis. According to the biblical narrative, these cities, along with three others in the region, were known for their wickedness and immorality.

The story goes that God decided to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah due to their sinful behavior. Two angels, disguised as men, visited Sodom to rescue Abraham’s nephew, Lot, and his family. The men of the city demanded that the visitors be handed over to them for immoral purposes, but Lot offered his daughters instead. The angels warned Lot and instructed him to leave the city with his family, as destruction was imminent.

As they left, fire and brimstone (often associated with sulfur) rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah, destroying the cities and their inhabitants. Lot’s wife, however, disobeyed the angels’ command not to look back and turned into a pillar of salt.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is often used as an example of divine judgment and the consequences of wickedness. The exact location of these cities remains uncertain, with several theories proposed over the years, but there is no conclusive archaeological evidence to confirm their existence or the specific details of the destruction described in the Bible.

The ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah have been discovered southeast of the Dead Sea. The modern names are Bab edh-Dhra, thought to be Sodom, and Numeira, thought to be Gomorrah. Both places were destroyed at the same time by an enormous conflagration. The destruction debris was about three feet thick. What brought about this awful calamity? Startling discoveries in the cemetery at Bab edh-Dhra revealed the cause. Archaeologists found that buildings used to bury the dead were burned by a fire that started on the roof.

What would cause every structure in the cemetery to be destroyed in this way? The answer to the mystery is found in the Bible. “Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens” (Genesis 19:24). The only conceivable explanation for this unique discovery in the annals of archaeology is that burning debris fell on the buildings from the air. But how could such a thing happen?

There is ample evidence of subterranean deposits of a petroleum-based substance called bitumen, similar to asphalt, in the region south of the Dead Sea. Such material normally contains a high percentage of sulfur. It has been postulated by geologist Frederick Clapp that pressure from an earthquake could have caused the bitumen deposits to be forced out of the earth through a fault line. As it gushed out of the earth it could have been ignited by a spark or surface fire. It would then fall to Earth as a burning, fiery mass.

It was only after Clapp formulated this theory that Sodom and Gomorrah were found. It turns out that the sites are located exactly on a fault line along the eastern side of a plain south of the Dead Sea, so Clapp’s theory is entirely plausible. There is some evidence for this scenario from the Bible itself. Abraham viewed the destruction from a vantage point west of the Dead Sea. The Bible records what Abraham saw: “He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace” (Genesis 19:28). Dense smoke suggests smoke from a petroleum-based fire. Smoke rising like smoke from a furnace indicates a forced draft, such as would be expected from subterranean deposits being forced out of the ground under pressure.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah became an example in the Bible of how God judges sin. “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before Me.
Sodom and Gomorrah, notoriously sinful cities in the biblical book of Genesis, destroyed by “sulfur and fire” because of their wickedness (Genesis 19:24). Sodom and Gomorrah along with the cities of Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar (Bela) constituted the five “cities of the plain,” and they are referenced throughout both the Old and New Testament and the Qurʾān.

Scriptural accounts

In the Genesis account, God reveals to Abraham that Sodom and Gomorrah are to be destroyed for their grave sins (18:20). Abraham pleads for the lives of any righteous people living there, especially the lives of his nephew, Lot, and his family. Abraham seems to negotiate with God on behalf of the righteous in the two cities. God first agrees to spare the cities if 50 righteous people can be found and eventually agrees to spare them if 10 righteous people can be found (18:23–32). Two angels, appearing as men, are sent to Lot in Sodom but are met with a wicked mob who ask for the newcomers. Lot offers the mob his daughters instead, but this only further enrages the mob, who are then struck blind by the angelic guests (19:1–11). Finding only Lot and his family as righteous among the inhabitants, the angels warn Lot to quickly evacuate the city and not look back. As they flee the destruction, Lot’s wife looks back upon the city and is turned into a pillar of salt (19:12–29).

The account in the Qurʾān (11:74–83 and 29:28–35) is similar, though the cities are not mentioned by name. Abraham pleads for “Lot’s people” but is told that the chastisement cannot be averted. Lot is grieved when the messengers tell him of the fate of his people and, as in the biblical narrative, offers his daughters in vain to the mob. Righteous Lot is told to escape in the night with his followers and is warned that his wife will suffer the same fate as the rest. The cities are destroyed by stones raining down.

The exact nature of the damning wickedness of the cities has been the subject of debate. Traditionally, Sodom and Gomorrah have been associated with homosexual acts. The mob of men that accosts the angels had demanded of Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them” (Genesis 19:5). This has long been interpreted as “carnal knowledge,” and many believe that it is the widespread homosexuality of the inhabitants that earns their obliteration. Other biblical references to Sodom and Gomorrah, including Jude 1:7, which mentions sexual immorality and “unnatural lust,” and the “abominable things” of Ezekiel 16:50, are seen as support for this view. source

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White has died, the band announced on Sunday, January 1, 2023. He was 67.

The brother of Earth, Wind & Fire founders Maurice and Verdine White, the then-teenage Fred joined the band in 1974 after drumming for the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Donny Hathaway. His talent helped Earth, Wind & Fire land their first Billboard No. 1 hit with “Shining Star,” helping to transform them into the disco powerhouse they’d soon become.

Though he left the band in the ’80s, Fred returned for their induction ceremony to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

He was brother number 4 in the family lineup. But more than that at home and beyond he was the wonderful bro that was always entertaining and delightfully mischievous!”

The official Earth, Wind & Fire Instagram account shared a video of Fred performing a drum solo during the band’s 1979 world tour in Germany. Watch it below.
