The young suspect is in custody after Monday night’s gunfire in Apopka, charged with second-degree attempted murder.

An 11-year-old boy is accused of shooting two 13-year-olds after they had scuffled at a youth football practice in central Florida on Monday night, authorities said.

The boy was arrested and booked on a single charge of second-degree attempted murder after the incident at the Northwest Recreation Complex in Apopka, outside Orlando, police said.

“That’s not good,” Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley told reporters. “We shouldn’t have 11-year-olds that have access to guns and think they can resolve a dispute with a firearm.”

The call for help came at 8:18 p.m., and officers arrived at 8:24 p.m., police said.

The young suspect and the victims had fought earlier in the evening during practice at the complex’s Field of Fame before the dispute spilled into the parking lot, officials said.

The 11-year-old retrieved a gun from his mother’s car and fired one shot, hitting a boy in the arm and another in the torso, McKinley said.

It was a crowded scene, and the gunfire could have led to more dire results, McKinley said. One of the boys remained stable in the hospital, and the other was released.

“We all thank God nobody was hurt more seriously than what they were,” he said. “This could have been a very tragic incident.”

The gun was in a box in the shooter’s mom’s car, but it was not locked as it should have been, said McKinley, who added that the suspect’s parent is also likely to face charges for not securing the gun.

A security camera allegedly captured the incident and showed the victims running from the shooter when he pulled the trigger.

“As a society, we need to reflect on this. We see this way too often in our society now of juveniles — young juveniles, and they’re getting younger every day — that have access to guns,” McKinley said.

“But the more disturbing part is they believe that gun, that firearm, is a resolution to their problems — and it’s not a resolution to anybody’s problems,” he said.

Pop Warner officials are trying to “better understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and work to ensure appropriate measures are in place to support the program and its members,” the Mid-Florida league of the youth football organization said in a statement Tuesday.

“We were saddened by the frightening incident,” Mid-Florida Pop Warner said. “The scourge of gun violence is even more disturbing when young children are involved.” source

Police: 11-year-old charged with shooting two 13-year-olds at youth football practice in Apopka

APOPKA, Fla. — Police in Apopka said an 11-year-old has been arrested and charged after two teens were shot at a youth football practice.

Apopka police said the shooting happened at a Pop Warner football practice Monday evening.

Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley said they received the call around 8:20 p.m. for a shooting at the Field of Fame.

McKinley said three juveniles got into a fight on the football field and carried the fight into the parking lot.

The police chief said the 11-year-old grabbed a gun from his mom’s car and fired one round that hit the two teens, who are both 13 years old.

One of them was hit in the arm and the other was hit in the torso.

Both teens were taken to the hospital, and are expected to be OK.

Police said additional charges could be coming.

HIRAM, Ga. — Two people were rushed to the hospital after they were shot at a Walmart in Paulding County Wednesday evening, Hiram Police said.

Authorities said the double shooting happened at 4166 Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway, which is a Walmart Supercenter located in Hiram. The store is in the same parking lot as the Hiram Crossing shopping mall and it’s also near a Subway, McDonald’s and Jimmy John’s.

Hiram Police said the scene is “contained.”

Details remain limited at this time. It’s unclear at this time how the shooting began or the extent of the injuries for the two people hurt by the gunfire.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. – A deputy in Riverside County is dead after being shot Friday.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane in Lake Elsinore. The deputy, later identified as 30-year-old Darnell Calhoun, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to Sheriff Chad Bianco, deputies responded to a child custody call around 4:20 p.m. Some short of altercation occurred, leading to Calhoun being shot. A second deputy arrived on scene and found Calhoun wounded on the street, Bianco stated. A shootout between that deputy and the suspect ensued. The suspect was struck and taken to the hospital in critical condition where they were also placed into custody. They have since been identified as 42-year-old Jesse Navarro.

Bianco said Calhoun joined the department in February 2022 after serving with the San Diego Police Department for two years. Calhoun was a husband, a son and was going to be a father.

“There is not one person with one negative to say about him,” Bianco said of Calhoun. “He was the most good, wholesome man you could ever imagine.”

“I hugged his mother and promised I would take care of him,” the sheriff emotionally said.

On behalf of the nearly 6,000 men and women of the California Department of Justice, I extend our deepest condolences to Deputy Calhoun’s family, colleagues, and the entire Riverside community. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Late Friday night, a procession was held to honor the deputy killed in the line of duty.

This violent incident comes just weeks after another Riverside County deputy was shot and killed by a suspect in Jurupa Valley. On the afternoon of Dec. 29, Deputy Isaiah Cordero was killed while attempting to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect who fired the shot, 44-year-old William Shae McKay, was later killed following a pursuit.

Darnell Calhoun: Slain Riverside County deputy laid to rest

Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy Darnell Calhoun was shot and killed responding to a domestic violence call in Lake Elsinore on Jan. 13.

 

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – The Riverside County community laid deputy Darnell Calhoun, who was killed in the line duty just over a week ago, to rest at a funeral service Saturday.

The 30-year-old Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy was killed on Jan. 13, responding to a domestic violence call in Lakeland Village near Lake Elsinore. On that day, Riverside County officials said 42-year-old Jesse Navarro shot Calhoun. Navarro was then shot by a second deputy who arrived on the scene. Navarro was taken to the hospital in critical condition and taken into custody.

“Our law enforcement family did not have time to process or come to grips with the loss of Isaiah [Cordero], when we were forced to deal with the unthinkable,” Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said at the service Saturday.

Bianco told FOX 11 that Calhoun joined the department in February 2022 after serving with the San Diego Police Department for two years. Saturday, Bianco reflected on asking Calhoun why he wanted to join the Riverside County Department and leave the San Diego Police.

 

“He responded that his commute was too long and he wanted to spend that time with his family,” Bianco said. “With that answer, I knew we had hired a good one.”

Calhoun was a father of two, with a third child on the way. His pregnant wife did not speak at Saturday’s ceremony, but did issue a statement on Facebook the night before, saying that Calhoun always made sure his children, “knew how much you loved them. I know that the love you have shown them will sustain them through this life.”
