Flock Cameras in Santa Clarita: The License Plate Reader Dragnet Tracking Every Car You Drive — and Why We Say It Violates the 4th and 14th Amendments

The City of Santa Clarita leases dozens of AI-powered Flock Safety license plate readers that photograph every vehicle that passes, build a searchable “fingerprint” of your car, and log where you have been — at locations the Sheriff’s Station refuses to disclose. Volunteers mapped them anyway. Search your own street below, see what these cameras collect, and read why we believe this is precisely the surveillance state the Constitution was written to prevent.

You didn’t consent to this. You were never asked. But if you drove to church on Sunday, to the pharmacy on Tuesday, or to a friend’s house on Friday night, there is a very good chance a camera bolted to a pole somewhere in Santa Clarita photographed your car, read your plate, logged the time and place, and filed it in a private company’s database where any deputy with a login can search it — no warrant, no judge, no suspicion required.

The cameras are made by Flock Safety, a venture-backed Atlanta company that has become the largest seller of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) in the United States. In November 2024, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a two-year lease of 35 Flock cameras for roughly $261,250, with renewals allowed up to $511,250, to be operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley station. By March 2025 the station said all 35 were installed. Where? The station told the local paper it would rather not say, citing the safety of the cameras.

The government that answers to you has placed surveillance equipment on public streets, paid for with your money, and decided that you are not entitled to know where it is watching you from.

Live map: Flock cameras and license plate readers in Santa Clarita

The Sheriff’s Station may not publish a list, but the cameras stand on public right-of-way in plain view, and a nationwide volunteer effort called DeFlock has been documenting them one by one into OpenStreetMap. This map pulls that data live every time the page loads. Red dots are Flock Safety cameras; gold dots are other or unlabeled license plate readers. The faint wedge shows which direction the lens faces. Click any dot for details. Type your ZIP code or street address to see every reader near your home, your church, or your child’s school.

Flock Cameras: A Warrantless Dragnet on Every Road

Flock Safety license plate readers photograph every car that passes — plate, make, color, bumper stickers, dents — and store where you were and when in a private database that police search with no warrant, no judge, and no suspicion. Santa Clarita leases 35 of them and won’t say where they are. Volunteers mapped them anyway.

Fourth Amendment. A permanent, searchable log of everyone’s movements is a search. The Supreme Court said so for cell-phone location data in Carpenter (2018) and again in Chatrie (2026). A camera on every chokepoint is the same dragnet on a pole.

Fourteenth Amendment. No notice, no hearing, no vote — the public was never told where the cameras are. And a tool any logged-in user can point at any group, with no judge in between, is not equal protection of the laws.

Look at where they sit. Not scattered at random — at the chokepoints. The freeway approaches. The arterials every neighborhood drains into. The parking lot exits. As of this writing the community data shows 67 license plate readers inside Santa Clarita — 34 tagged as Flock Safety hardware and 33 from other vendors or not yet identified — every one of them with a recorded facing direction. That is nearly double the 35 the city leased, which tells you the city contract is only part of the picture: homeowners associations, shopping centers, and other agencies are running their own. If you leave your neighborhood the same way each morning, you are passing the same camera every day. That is not a tool for finding a stolen car. That is a net.

What is a Flock camera, and what does it actually record?

A Flock Safety camera is a solar-powered, cellular-connected license plate reader, usually mounted on a black pole or an existing traffic signal, aimed at the rear plates of passing cars. Flock’s marketing says its cameras “just read license plates.” The City of Santa Clarita’s own staff report says otherwise. The cameras, in the city’s words, employ machine learning and artificial intelligence to capture vehicle characteristics beyond the plate — color, make, body type, roof racks, bumper stickers, dents — so that a vehicle can be searched for even when no plate number is known. Flock calls this a “Vehicle Fingerprint.” A single camera can process up to 30,000 vehicles a day.

Every one of those 30,000 captures is a record of an innocent person going about their life. The camera does not know or care whether you are a fugitive or a grandmother. It records everyone and sorts it out later — which is to say, it records everyone and keeps it. Once uploaded, the data lives on Flock’s servers, and any officer with credentials can search it — and, depending on the sharing settings the agency chooses, so can hundreds of other agencies around the country through Flock’s national network.

Why we believe Flock cameras violate the Fourth Amendment

The Fourth Amendment guarantees “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” For most of American history the government could not follow you everywhere you went because doing so was expensive: it took a deputy, a car, and a lot of coffee. That cost was itself a protection. Flock cameras erase it. For a few thousand dollars a pole, the government now follows everyone, everywhere, all the time, and stores the result.

The Supreme Court has already recognized this danger. In Carpenter v. United States (2018) it held that the government needs a warrant to obtain historical cell phone location records, because a record of “the whole of a person’s movements” reveals their “familial, political, professional, religious, and sexual associations.” This summer, in Chatrie v. United States, the Court went further, holding by a 6–3 vote that pulling a person’s location data is a search even when investigators only take a narrow slice of a much larger database — the exact argument cities have used to defend their camera networks.

We will be honest about the state of the law, because our readers deserve it. In January 2026, a federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia ruled that that city’s network of 176 Flock cameras did not yet violate the Fourth Amendment, because with 21-day retention and gaps in coverage it did not capture the “whole” of a person’s movements. The same judge warned in the same opinion that ALPR surveillance could cross the line “at some point.” In that case, the city’s own data showed the two plaintiffs’ cars — two ordinary people, no warrant, no charges — had been photographed hundreds of times in four months. The plaintiffs have appealed to the Fourth Circuit, and the Institute for Justice has filed a similar Fourth Amendment suit against San Jose, right here in California.

“Not today,” the judge wrote. We say: what is the number, then? How many cameras, how many days of retention, before a free people are entitled to say the government may not build a searchable record of where every one of us has been?

Santa Clarita has already decided the answer for us, without asking. We believe the courts will eventually catch up to what common sense already knows: a permanent, warrantless, city-wide log of the movements of every innocent driver is an unreasonable search, whether the judge in Norfolk is ready to say so or not.

The Fourteenth Amendment: due process and equal protection

The Fourteenth Amendment promises that no state shall deprive any person of liberty without due process of law, nor deny any person the equal protection of the laws. Both promises are broken here.

No notice, no hearing, no vote

Due process starts with notice. Santa Clarita installed a surveillance network on public streets and refused to tell the public where it is. There was no hearing on whether residents wanted to be tracked, no public vote, no meaningful opportunity to object — only a line item on a council agenda approved after “some debate.” The city cannot deprive you of the liberty to move about anonymously in your own town and then deny you even the information needed to understand what was taken.

A dragnet that falls on whoever the person at the keyboard chooses

Equal protection is the promise that the law falls on everyone alike. But a camera network at neighborhood chokepoints does not fall on everyone alike; it falls hardest on whoever the person at the keyboard decides to look for. Around the country, Flock data has been used to track a woman across state lines over an abortion and to feed federal immigration enforcement — in Mountain View, California, city officials discovered federal and state agencies had searched their cameras without consent. That revelation is why Santa Clara County voted in February 2026 to drop Flock entirely, why Los Altos Hills pulled its cameras down in January, and why by one count more than 90 cities nationwide have rejected or canceled Flock contracts. When a tool can be pointed at any group by any logged-in user with no judge in between, “equal protection” becomes whatever the person searching decides it is.

California’s Constitution says privacy is inalienable — and Sacramento did nothing

California’s own Constitution goes further than the federal one: Article I, Section 1 names privacy as an inalienable right of every Californian. And yet, as CalMatters reported this week, the Legislature has now failed for the fifth straight year to pass meaningful regulation of these cameras; this year’s bill, SB 1013, died without a vote. The people who could set the limits have declined to. That leaves it to cities — and to us.

The 1984 surveillance state, built one pole at a time

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is usually invoked lazily. We invoke it precisely. Orwell’s insight was not that the telescreen was always watching; it was that no one could ever be sure whether it was, and so everyone behaved as if it were. That is the effect of a camera network whose locations are secret and whose data is searchable at will. You do not have to be guilty of anything to change where you drive, whom you visit, which meeting you attend, which church or clinic or lawyer’s office you pull into. You only have to know that someone could look.

A community of free people does not have to accept this. We are told the cameras help deputies with staffing shortages; we are told they find stolen cars. Perhaps. Every surveillance state in history has been able to point to a criminal it caught. The question a constitutional republic asks is different: what does it cost the innocent, and who gets to decide? In Santa Clarita, so far, the answer to the second question has been “not you.”

What Santa Clarita residents can do about Flock cameras

Speak at City Council. The Flock lease is a two-year contract with renewal options. Renewal is a vote. Show up, put your name on the record, and ask each councilmember whether they will vote to renew warrantless tracking of their own constituents.

Demand the audit logs. California’s ALPR statute (Civil Code §1798.90.5 et seq.) requires every ALPR operator to maintain a usage and privacy policy and to log who accessed the data and why. File a California Public Records Act request with the City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Sheriff’s Station for the Flock usage policy, the search/access logs, and every outside agency the data has been shared with.

Map the cameras. If there is a reader on your street that isn’t on the map above, photograph it and add it at deflock.org. Secrecy is the program’s first defense; a complete public map takes it away.

Ask your HOA and your shopping center. Nearly half the readers mapped in this city are not the city’s. Ask who owns the one at your gate, what it keeps, and who can search it.

Sign, and tell your neighbors. Resident petitions to remove the cameras — including “Remove Flock Cameras from Santa Clarita” and “DeFlock SCV” — are circulating. Signatures alone won’t do it, but they tell the council which way the wind is blowing.

Frequently asked questions about Flock cameras in Santa Clarita

<details open="open">

Are there Flock cameras in Santa Clarita?

Yes. The City of Santa Clarita approved a lease of 35 Flock Safety automated license plate readers in November 2024, operated by the LASD Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, and confirmed all 35 were installed by March 2025. Volunteers have mapped 67 license plate readers in the city in total, including cameras operated by HOAs, businesses, and other agencies.

</details>
<details open="open">

Where are the Flock cameras located in Santa Clarita?

The city and the Sheriff’s Station have declined to publish locations. The live map on this page shows every reader that volunteers have documented in OpenStreetMap, clustered at freeway approaches, major intersections, neighborhood entrances, and shopping-center exits. Search your ZIP code or address in the map to see the readers nearest you.

</details>
<details open="open">

What does a Flock camera look like?

Typically a small black or gray rectangular camera on top of a slender black pole with a solar panel, or bolted to an existing traffic signal or light pole, angled down toward the road to photograph rear license plates.

</details>
<details open="open">

What information does a Flock camera collect?

According to the City of Santa Clarita’s own staff report, the cameras use machine learning and AI to capture the license plate plus vehicle characteristics such as make, color, body type, roof racks, bumper stickers, and damage — what Flock calls a “Vehicle Fingerprint” — along with the time, date, location, and direction of travel. Each camera can process up to 30,000 vehicles per day.

</details>
<details open="open">

Do police need a warrant to search Flock camera data?

No. Under current practice, deputies with credentials can search the database without a warrant. Whether that violates the Fourth Amendment is being litigated: a federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia ruled in January 2026 that Norfolk’s network did not yet cross the line but warned it could; that ruling is on appeal, and the Supreme Court’s June 2026 decision in Chatrie v. United States strengthened the argument that warrantless location tracking is a search.

</details>
<details open="open">

Can other agencies, or the federal government, see Santa Clarita’s Flock data?

Flock allows each agency to share its data with other Flock customers, and the network has been searched by outside and federal agencies in other California cities — Mountain View found federal and state agencies had accessed its cameras without consent. Whether and with whom Santa Clarita shares its data is exactly what a Public Records Act request for the Flock audit logs would reveal.

</details>
<details open="open">

How much do Flock cameras cost Santa Clarita taxpayers?

About $261,250 for the initial two-year lease of 35 cameras, with total contract costs not to exceed $511,250 if renewed.

</details>
<details open="open">

Are Flock cameras legal in California?

California has no law banning ALPRs. Civil Code §1798.90.5 et seq. requires operators to have a usage and privacy policy and keep access logs, and Article I, Section 1 of the California Constitution declares privacy an inalienable right. The Legislature has failed five years running to pass stricter regulation, most recently letting SB 1013 die in 2026.

A new book investigating the maths in The Simpsons has revealed something ridiculously awesome and completely unexpected – in the 1998 episode “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace”, Homer comes up with a mathematical equation that predicts the mass of the Higgs boson more than a decade before physicists at CERN discovered it.

Why, you ask? Well if you don’t remember the episode, Homer suddenly becomes an inventor, coming up with such devices as an electric hammer and a make-up gun. In the process, he unleashes his hidden mathematical ability, predicting the mass of the Higgs boson to be 775 giga-electron-volts (GeV). British science writer and author of The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets, Simon Singh, says in the scheme of things, that figure isn’t actually that far off the 125 GeV estimate that was the result of the CERN Higgs boson discovery in 2012.

Turns out a lot of the writers on The Simpsons are mathematicians, Singh telling The Independent that it’s “the most mathematical TV show on prime-time television in history.” The mathematician who happened to write that formula for Homer is David X. Cohen, who went on to be the head writer and executive producer of Futurama. According to Richard Gray at The Daily Mail, Cohen contacted one of his high school friends, David Schiminovich, who is an astronomer at Columbia University, and worked with him on the equation.

The Simpsons has ended up being a real treasure trove of fascinating little tidbits for scientists to mull over. Just last month, astronomer Phil Plait made the rather unsettling discovery that Springfield might just be set in the Southern Hemisphere, thanks to THIS MOON. And late last year, the most mathematical show on prime-time television, plus someone called ‘Kim Jong Fun’, helped prove the very important point that some journals will publish literally anything. How lucky are we to have had Homer and co. in our lives for almost 30 years?

Key Predictions That Came True:

Digital Currencies: The authors anticipated the rise of private, decentralized forms of money that would bypass governments — remarkably similar to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Decline of Nation-States: They predicted that as wealth and information moved online, traditional governments would lose control over money, taxation, and citizens who could operate globally through digital systems.

Cybercrime & Cyber Warfare: They foresaw new forms of conflict in cyberspace, where power would shift from physical to digital battlegrounds.

Remote Work & Digital Nomadism: The authors envisioned a future where highly skilled individuals could live and work anywhere, leveraging technology to achieve independence from centralized systems.

Wealth Disparity & Political Polarization: They warned that technology would create new elites — “sovereign individuals” — while destabilizing traditional economic and political structures.

Another 1997 warning came from Wired magazine’s July 1997 cover story, which predicted enormous technological progress but also flagged potential crises that could derail it — including pandemics, climate change, and soaring energy costs.

Together, these 1997 insights painted a surprisingly accurate picture of the 21st century — an age of digital power, decentralization, and disruption that defines our world today.

Hydrogen-powered cars. Biological, then quantum computing. Gene-therapy cancer treatments. An end to the War on Drugs. Reliable automatic translation. The impending end of the nation-state. Man setting foot on Mars. These are just a few of the developments in store for our world by the year 2020 — or so, at any rate, predicts “The Long Boom,” the cover story of a 1997 issue of Wired magazine, the official organ of 1990s techno-optimism. “We’re facing 25 years of prosperity, freedom, and a better environment for the whole world,” declares the cover itself. “You got a problem with that?”

Since the actual year 2020, this image has been smirkingly re-circulated as a prime example of blinkered End-of-History triumphalism. From the vantage of 2021, it’s fair to say that the predictions of the article’s authors Peter Schwartz and Peter Leyden (who expanded their thesis into a 2000 book) went wide of the mark.

But their vision of the 21st century hasn’t proven risible in every aspect: a rising China, hybrid cars, video calls, and online grocery-shopping have become familiar enough hardly to merit comment, as has the internet’s status as “the main medium of the 21st century.” And who among us would describe the cost of university as anything but “absurd”?

Schwartz and Leyden do allow for darker possibilities than their things-can-only-get-better rhetoric make it seem. Some of these they enumerate in a sidebar (remember sidebars?) headlined “Ten Scenario Spoilers.” Though not included in the article as archived on Wired’s web site, it has recently been scanned and posted to social media, with viral results. A “new Cold War” between the U.S. and China; a “global climate change that, among other things, disrupts the food supply”; a “major rise in crime and terrorism forces the world to pull back in fear”; an “uncontrollable plague — a modern-day influenza epidemic or its equivalent”: to one degree or another, every single one of these ten dire developments seems in our time to have come to pass.

“We’re still on the front edge of the great global boom,” we’re reminded in the piece’s conclusion. “A hell of a lot of things could go wrong.” You don’t say. Yet for all of the 21st-century troubles that few riding the wave of first-dot-com-boom utopianism would have credited, we today run the risk of seeing our world as too dystopian. Now as then, “the vast array of problems to solve and the sheer magnitude of the changes that need to take place are enough to make any global organization give up, any nation back down, any reasonable person curl up in a ball.” We could use a fresh infusion of what Schwartz and Leyden frame as the boom’s key ingredient: American optimism. “Americans don’t understand limits. They have boundless confidence in their ability to solve problems. And they have an amazing capacity to think they really can change the world.” In that particular sense, perhaps we all should become Americans after all.

PATRIOT Act Author: The NSA Is Actively Violating The Law

Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), the author of the original USA PATRIOT Act, disagrees.

In a amicus brief filed in support of the American Civil Liberties Union’s lawsuit against the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of U.S. phone records, Sensenbrenner argues that the government has gone far beyond what the legislation authorizes.

Section 215, known as the business records provision, authorizes intelligence agencies to apply for information if “the records are relevant to an ongoing foreign intelligence investigation.”

In practice, the NSA uses section 215 to collect data pertaining to every phone call to, from, and within the U.S. in the name of combating terrorism.

Sensenbrenner and the other members of Congress who enacted Section 215 “did not intend to authorize the program at issue in this lawsuit or any program of a comparable scope,” according to the brief.

The brief goes on to propose this question (emphasis ours):

The NSA is gathering on a daily basis the details of every call that every American makes, as well as every call made by foreigners to or from the United States. How can every call that every American makes or receives be relevant to a specific investigation?“

Filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the brief notes that Sensenbrenner “was not aware of the full scope of the program when he voted to reauthorize Section 215” and would have voted against it if he had known.

In Sensenbrenner’s words: “The suggestion that the administration can violate the law because Congress failed to object is outrageous. But let them be on notice: I am objecting right now.” source

Further evidence supports controversial claim that SARS-CoV-2 genes can integrate with human DNA

After being challenged, research team provides more data to back its controversial hypothesis but the relevance to human health is unclear

Science‘s COVID-19 reporting is supported by the Heising-Simons Foundation.

A team of prominent scientists has doubled down on its controversial hypothesis that genetic bits of the pandemic coronavirus can integrate into our chromosomes and stick around long after the infection is over. If they are right—skeptics have argued that their results are likely lab artifacts—the insertions could explain the rare finding that people can recover from COVID-19 but then test positive for SARS-CoV-2 again months later.

Stem cell biologist Rudolf Jaenisch and gene regulation specialist Richard Young of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who led the work, triggered a Twitter storm in December 2020, when their team first presented the idea in a preprint on bioRxiv. The researchers emphasized that viral integration did not mean people who recovered from COVID-19 remain infectious. But critics charged them with stoking unfounded fears that COVID-19 vaccines based on messenger RNA (mRNA) might somehow alter human DNA. (Janesich and Young stress that their results, both original and new, in no way imply that those vaccines integrate their sequences into our DNA.)

Researchers also presented a brace of scientific criticisms, some of which the team addresses in a paper released online today by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). “We now have unambiguous evidence that coronavirus sequences can integrate into the genome,” Jaenisch says.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has genes composed of RNA, and Jaenisch, Young, and co-authors contend that on rare occasions an enzyme in human cells may copy the viral sequences into DNA and slip them into our chromosomes. The enzyme, reverse transcriptase, is encoded by LINE-1 elements, sequences that litter 17% of the human genome and represent artifacts of ancient infections by retroviruses. In their original preprint, the researchers presented test tube evidence that when human cells spiked with extra LINE-1 elements were infected with the coronavirus, DNA versions of SARS-CoV-2’s sequences nestled into the cells’ chromosomes.

Many researchers who specialize in LINE-1 elements and other “retrotransposons” thought the data were too thin to support the claim. “If I would have had this data, I would have not submitted to any publication at that point,” says Cornell University’s Cedric Feschotte, who studies endogenous retrovirus chunks in the human genome. He and others also said they expected higher quality work coming from scientists of the caliber of Jaenisch and Young. In two subsequent studies, both posted on bioRxiv, critics presented evidence that the supposed chimeras of human and viral DNA traces are routinely created by the very technique the group used to scan for them in chromosomes. As one report concluded, the human-virus sequences “are more likely to be a methodological product, [sic] than the result of genuine reverse transcription, integration and expression.”

In their new paper, Jaenisch, Young, and colleagues acknowledge that the technique they used accidentally creates human-viral chimeras. “I think it’s a valid point,” Jaenisch says. He adds that when they first submitted the paper to a journal, they knew it needed stronger data, which they hoped to add during the review process. But the journal, like many, requires authors to immediately post all COVID-19 results to a preprint server. “I probably should have said screw you, I won’t put it on bioRxiv. It was a misjudgment,” Jaenisch says.

In the new PNAS paper, the team provides evidence that artifacts alone can’t explain the detected levels of virus-human chimeric DNA. The scientists also show that portions of LINE-1 elements flank the integrated viral genetic sequence, further supporting their hypothesis. And they have collaborated with one of the original skeptics, Stephen Hughes of the National Cancer Institute, who suggested an experiment to clarify whether the integration was real or noise, based on the orientation of the integrated viral sequences relative to the human ones. The results support the original hypothesis, says Hughes, a co-author of the new paper. “That analysis has turned out to be important,” he says.

“The integration data in cell culture is much more convincing than what was presented in the preprint, but it’s still not totally clean,” says Feschotte, who now calls Jaenisch’s and Young’s hypothesis “plausible.” (SARS-CoV-2, he notes, can also persist in a person for months without integrating its genes.)

The real question is whether the cell culture data have any relevance to human health or diagnostics. “In the absence of evidence of integration in patients, the most I can take away from these data is that it is possible to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA retroposition events in infected cell lines where L1 is overexpressed,” Feschotte says. “The clinical or biological significance of these observations, if any, is a matter of pure speculation at this point.”

Jaenisch’s and Young’s team do report hints of SARS-CoV-2 integration in tissue from living and autopsied COVID-19 patients. Specifically, the researchers found high levels of a type of RNA that is only produced by integrated viral DNA as the cell reads its sequence to make proteins. But, Young acknowledges, “We do not have direct evidence for that yet.”

Harmit Malik, a specialist in ancient viruses in the human genome at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, says it’s a “legitimate question” to ask why people who should have cleared the virus sometimes have positive polymerase chain Reaction tests for its sequences. But he also remains unconvinced that the explanation is integrated virus. “Under normal circumstances, there is so little reverse transcription machinery available” in human cells, Malik says.

The controversy has grown decidedly more civil since December. Both Young and Jaenisch say they received more intense criticism for their preprint than any studies in their careers, in part because some researchers worried it played into the hands of vaccine skeptics spreading false claims about the newly authorized mRNA vaccines. “If there ever was a preprint that should be deleted, it is this one! It was irresponsible to even put it up as a preprint, considering the complete lack of relevant evidence. This is now being used by some to spread doubts about the new vaccines,” Marie-Louise Hammarskjöld, a microbiologist at the University of Virginia, posted in a comment on bioRxiv at the time.

And what of the original journal submission? “They rejected it,” Jaenisch says. source

When people are told that the earth’s rock layers represent millions of years of slow and steady processes, most simply accept it without question. After all, it’s what the textbooks say. But sometimes nature itself speaks louder than any textbook. One photo of a common geological feature is enough to raise serious doubts about the standard story of “deep time.”

The photo shows horizontal layers of sedimentary rock with a vertical seam cutting directly through them. Evolutionary geologists insist that these layers were laid down slowly, hardened into stone, and then—millions of years later—molten rock pushed upward, creating the vertical seam. But here’s the problem: if those layers had really been hard rock for millions of years, the intrusion should have shattered them. Instead, the seam slices neatly through, as if the layers were still soft when it happened.

This observation fits perfectly with the biblical account of Noah’s Flood. The Flood was not a tranquil rise of water, but a catastrophic, worldwide event that deposited vast amounts of sediment in a very short time. These layers would have built up quickly, not over millions of years, and while still water-saturated and pliable, molten material intruded and cooled into the vertical feature we see today. What evolutionary geologists interpret as “slow and gradual over eons” can be better explained as “rapid and catastrophic during the year-long Flood.”

And here lies the real issue: evolution cannot survive without millions and billions of years. Darwin’s theory requires deep time as its foundation. Without it, the supposed slow accumulation of changes, mutations, and adaptations has no stage to play on. If the rocks themselves testify not to endless ages but to rapid catastrophe, then the time needed for evolution simply evaporates.

In other words, this photo doesn’t just challenge a detail of geology—it strikes at the very heart of the evolutionary story. The Bible tells us in 2 Peter 3:3–6 that in the last days people would deliberately forget the reality of God’s creation and the judgment of the Flood. What we see in the rocks is exactly what Scripture has told us all along: God created, God judged, and His Word can be trusted.

The evidence is right before our eyes. Layers formed quickly. Intrusions cut cleanly. Catastrophe, not deep time, shaped the earth. The question is not whether the Bible can be trusted—it is whether we will trust the Bible or the ever-changing opinions of man.

The Rosenhan experiment, conducted by psychologist David L. Rosenhan in the early 1970s, investigated the validity of psychiatric diagnoses by examining how mental health professionals identified mental illness. In this controversial study, eight individuals without any psychiatric history feigned auditory hallucinations to gain admission to twelve different mental hospitals across the United States. Despite providing truthful information about their lives and claiming to no longer hear voices, all participants were diagnosed with severe mental disorders, primarily schizophrenia, and remained hospitalized for an average of nineteen days. The study highlighted significant issues within psychiatric institutions, such as the staff’s limited interaction with patients and their tendency to misinterpret normal behavior as symptomatic of mental illness.

Rosenhan’s findings raised critical questions about the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses and the impact of labeling on both patients and staff perceptions. This experiment prompted discussions regarding the biases present in mental health evaluations and led to reforms in psychiatric care and diagnostic practices. While the study has faced scrutiny over its methodology, its implications continue to resonate across psychology, sociology, and mental health fields, making it a landmark investigation into the nature of mental illness and the functioning of psychiatric institutions.

In 1973 a bombshell study appeared in the premier scientific journal Science. It was called “On Being Sane in Insane Places.” Its author, a Stanford psychology professor named David Rosenhan, claimed that by faking their way into psychiatric hospitals, he and eight other pseudo-patients had proven that psychiatrists were unable to diagnose mental illness accurately.

Psychiatrists panicked, and, as a result, re-wrote what’s known as “psychiatry’s bible”—the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM. The study and the subsequent overhaul of the DSM changed the field forever. So it was a surprise when, decades later, a journalist reopened Rosenhan’s files and discovered that the study was full of inconsistencies and even blatant fraud. So should we throw out everything it revealed? Or can something based on a lie still contain any truths?

On being sane in insane places – Rosenhan, D.L. (1973)

Have you ever had a reputation for something that you didn’t like? Was it difficult to change people’s minds? Have you ever made up your mind about a person before you’ve met them properly, based only on a rumour you’ve heard? We are all guilty of labelling people all the time. But what if you were labelled as ‘insane’? How would you prove that you weren’t mad?

Don’t forget the second study…

Arguably the most ingenious and certainly the most mischievous part of Rosenhan’s paper is the second study he reported, involving “a research and teaching hospital whose staff had heard these findings but doubted that such an error could occur in their hospital.”

Don’t forget this second study when discussing Rosenhan’s conclusions and applications, as it shows that therapists’ diagnosis can be manipulated the other way as well! When they are primed to be more careful, they can be made to make the opposite mistake that that they did in the first study.

This shows very clearly that the diagnosis of mental illness is hugely influenced by labelling, and that by altering the label that they are likely to give to a newly arrived patient, they could alter the disgnosis that they were likely to get. As Rosenhan is careful to point out, it does not imply that the doctors are hopeless, merely that the label makes a big difference to the diagnosis, and the second study is crucial in illustrating this conclusively.

What is the Longest Living Terrarium?

A terrarium is a self-sustaining miniature ecosystem, capturing a slice of nature within glass. With the right conditions, terrariums can last for years, creating a thriving environment for plants to grow with minimal maintenance. But just how long can a terrarium live? Some have been known to survive for decades, even over a century, without intervention. The longest-living terrarium on record has been growing strong for more than 60 years, proving that with the right balance of water, light, and airflow, a terrarium can thrive indefinitely.

In 1960, David Latimer planted a tiny garden inside of a large glass bottle and sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.
For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.

the plant used in this long experiement is tradescantia

The World’s Oldest Terrarium

The longest-living closed terrarium was planted by David Latimer in 1960. He sealed the glass container in 1972, and since then, it has remained almost completely untouched. Despite being watered only twice in over 50 years, the terrarium has continued to thrive. The plants inside recycle nutrients through a self-sustaining water and air cycle, proving how resilient a closed ecosystem can be.

The Glass Container and Initial Setup

Latimer used a 10-gallon glass carboy, a large, globular glass jug originally intended for storing liquids. On Easter Sunday in 1960, he carefully placed composted soil at the base of the carboy, along with a small amount of water. To plant the cuttings inside, he used a piece of wire to lower them through the narrow opening. The jar was sealed with a greased cork stopper, ensuring an airtight environment. Twelve years later, in 1972, Latimer decided to open the bottle just once to add a bit more water. Since then, the terrarium has remained sealed, functioning entirely as a self-sustaining ecosystem without any outside interference.

The Self-Sustaining Ecosystem

Inside the carboy, the spiderwort plant (Tradescantia) has thrived by cycling water, nutrients, and air. The plant’s leaves release moisture through transpiration, which condenses on the inside walls of the glass and falls back into the soil creating a miniature water cycle. The fallen leaves decompose naturally, providing essential nutrients for continued growth.

Despite being completely sealed, the ecosystem continues to regulate itself. During the day, the spiderwort undergoes photosynthesis, producing oxygen, while at night, it consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The balance of gases, along with decomposing organic matter, has allowed the terrarium to sustain itself for over 60 years.

David Latimer’s Perspective

Latimer originally created the terrarium as an experiment, inspired by the bottle garden craze of the 1960s. He never expected it to last for decades but was fascinated by its self-sustaining nature. The terrarium has been kept in the same spot in his home, about six feet from a window, where it receives only indirect sunlight. Occasionally, he rotates the bottle to ensure even light exposure, but otherwise, it requires no care. Over the years, the terrarium has drawn interest from scientists and gardening enthusiasts alike. It has been cited as an example of how plants could sustain themselves in closed environments, similar to the concept of self-sustaining life support systems in space exploration.

Latimer’s Own Reflections and Statements

David Latimer has shared his personal impressions of the terrarium in various interviews, especially after the story caught public attention around 2013. For many years, the bottle garden quietly sat in his home (in the hallway under the stairs) without fanfare. Latimer eventually sent a photograph of the flourishing sealed garden to the BBC Radio program “Gardener’s Question Time” in the early 2010s, asking the panel of experts if his bottle garden was of any scientific or horticultural interest. This sparked media interest in his experiment – soon reporters and scientists were inquiring about the 50-year-old terrarium. The story was covered in major outlets like The Daily Mail and The Times, and Latimer, then about 80 years old, gave interviews describing the history of his unique houseplant.

It’s true that Latimer created a self-sustaining ecosystem inside a sealed bottle in 1960 that survived for more than half a century.

In speaking about his sealed terrarium, Latimer has emphasized how effortless its care really is. He has called it “the definition of low-maintenance,” noting that he’s “never pruned it” and essentially does nothing beyond occasional turning of the bottle. The plant seems to have self-regulated its growth once it filled the space, so there’s little for a gardener to do. In fact, Latimer humbly admitted that the bottled garden is “incredibly dull and doesn’t really do anything” on a day-to-day basis there are no dramatic changes to observe in a given week or month. However, he remains deeply proud and fascinated by its long-term survival. Latimer has expressed excitement to see “just how long it will last,” keeping the experiment going for as long as possible.

Now in his old age, he has even joked about the terrarium outliving him. He hopes to pass on this living bottle garden to his children in the future – and if his family isn’t interested in keeping it, Latimer has said he would like to donate the terrarium to the Royal Horticultural Society so that it can continue to be cared for and studied by others. Through his interviews and statements, David Latimer comes across as a pleasantly surprised caretaker: he started the project out of simple curiosity, and decades later he is as amazed as anyone that his sealed bottle terrarium is still green and thriving. It stands as a testament to nature’s resilience and the elegance of closed ecosystems, all born from one man’s idle experiment back in 1960.

Latimer, a retired electrical engineer from Surrey, England, created his bottle garden in 1960.

“At the time the chemical industry had changed to transporting things in plastic bottles so there were a lot of glass ones on the market,” Latimer told the Daily Mail in 2013. “Bottle gardens were a bit of a craze and I wanted to see what happened if you bunged the thing up.”

The concept was simple: He planted a spiderwort plant (tradescantia) inside a 10-gallon glass carboy and sealed it off from the outside world with a cork. He watered the plant once in 1972, and since then, the ecosystem has been entirely self-sustaining, requiring no further intervention.

The garden’s longevity testified to the principles of a closed ecological system. Inside the sealed bottle, the spiderwort plant undergoes photosynthesis — the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy to produce food and release oxygen — which sustains its own growth and the survival of microorganisms within the ecosystem. The water cycle is also self-contained, with moisture released by the plant condensing and returning to the soil. This self-sustaining cycle continued for more than 50 years.

“It’s 6ft from a window so gets a bit of sunlight. It grows towards the light so it gets turned round every so often so it grows evenly,” Latimer told the Daily Mail. “Otherwise, it’s the definition of low-maintenance. I’ve never pruned it, it just seems to have grown to the limits of the bottle.”

Latimer’s sealed bottle garden has sparked discussions about the potential applications of closed ecological systems in various fields, including space exploration and environmental conservation.

NASA’s research has shown that plants not only produce oxygen through photosynthesis but also help regulate carbon dioxide levels with their so-called air-scrubbing qualities, provide fresh food and even purify water, making long-duration space missions more sustainable and self-sufficient.

The Weather Channel’s story in 2016 was the last public update on the garden that Snopes could find; its status in 2024 was unclear. The Daily Mail reported that Latimer hoped to leave his bottle garden to his children, and if they didn’t want it he planned to donate it to the U.K.’s Royal Horticultural Society.

How Does a Terrarium Live for Decades?

The longevity of a terrarium depends on several key factors. When carefully designed, a terrarium can function like a miniature rainforest, where moisture, air, and nutrients continuously cycle through the system. Here’s how:

1. The Water Cycle A closed terrarium creates its own rain cycle. Water evaporates, condenses on the glass, and then drips back down to nourish the plants. This process prevents the need for frequent watering and ensures a steady supply of moisture.

2. Photosynthesis and Oxygen Exchange Plants in a sealed terrarium generate oxygen during the day through photosynthesis. At night, they release carbon dioxide. This natural cycle allows the terrarium to regulate itself without outside interference.

3. Decomposers Keep the Ecosystem Clean Fallen leaves and organic matter break down naturally, thanks to beneficial bacteria and microorganisms. These act as decomposers, recycling nutrients back into the soil, just as they would in a real forest.

4. Balanced Light and Temperature Terrariums need indirect light to keep the plants healthy without overheating the system. Excess heat or direct sunlight can cause condensation to build up too quickly, potentially leading to mould or plant stress.

Can Your Terrarium Live Forever?

In theory, a well-maintained terrarium could last indefinitely. If the balance of light, water, and nutrients remains stable, the ecosystem will continue cycling without the need for human intervention. However, external factors like overwatering, insufficient light, or an imbalance in plant life can shorten its lifespan.

To give your terrarium the best chance at longevity:

Choose hardy plants that thrive in humid environments, such as moss, ferns, and fittonia. Avoid overwatering – a single watering when setting up the terrarium is often enough for months or even years. Provide indirect light to encourage healthy photosynthesis. Monitor for mould and remove any decaying plant matter to maintain a healthy balance.

The longest-living terrariums prove that a well-balanced, closed ecosystem can last for decades with little to no care. Whether you’re starting your first terrarium or looking to improve your current one, focusing on the right conditions can help it thrive for years to come.

Laika weighed just over 10 pounds, and life as a stray dog in bustling 1950s Moscow likely terrified her. The city streets were packed with cars, sidewalks were constantly full of fast-moving human feet, and the temperature dropped far below freezing during winter. When a group of experimenters scooped up the little dog on a brisk October day in 1957, she had no way of knowing her life was about to get much worse. Over the next few weeks, Laika went from a stray dog to a “Space Dog” in training. Learn who Laika was and why even the experimenters who sentenced her to death eventually regretted their decision.

Experimenters kept the dogs in extreme confinement for days to accustom them to the cramped space capsule. This imprisonment reportedly caused the dogs to stop urinating and defecating—even when given laxatives—and their mental condition allegedly deteriorated. The dogs were also forced through centrifuge simulations that mimicked a space launch and exposed to loud, continuous noises, which reportedly caused their pulse rates to double and their blood pressure to spike, seemingly causing extreme terror for the dogs.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still spreading worldwide, and there is an urgent need to effectively prevent and control this pandemic. This study evaluated the potential efficacy of Egg Yolk Antibodies (IgY) as a neutralizing agent against the SARS-CoV-2. We investigated the neutralizing effect of anti-spike-S1 IgYs on the SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus, as well as its inhibitory effect on the binding of the coronavirus spike protein mutants to human ACE2. Our results show that the anti-Spike-S1 IgYs showed significant neutralizing potency against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus, various spike protein mutants, and even SARS-CoV in vitro. It might be a feasible tool for the prevention and control of ongoing COVID-19.
