A landmark scientific study found that children exposed to physical abuse and domestic violence can develop heightened neurological responses to perceived threats—similar to patterns previously observed in soldiers exposed to combat. The findings raise serious questions about what happens to a child’s developing brain when home becomes a place of fear instead of safety.

By Philip senior journalist | Good Shepherd News Media

The place where a child should feel safest may become the place where the brain learns to expect danger.

For most children, home is supposed to be a refuge. It is where they learn trust, develop relationships, discover the world, and build the emotional foundation that will follow them into adulthood.

But what happens when home becomes a place of constant arguing, intimidation, physical violence, threats, or fear?

Scientists have discovered something deeply troubling: children exposed to family violence can develop measurable differences in how their brains respond to threatening situations.

And the neurological pattern researchers observed bears a striking resemblance to one previously identified in soldiers exposed to combat.

This is not simply a question of whether a child is upset, frightened, or emotionally affected by what happens around them. Researchers found measurable differences in brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

The implications reach far beyond childhood behavior. They raise important questions about the long-term consequences of growing up in an environment where a child never knows when the next confrontation might occur.

On December 6, 2011, researchers published a study in the scientific journal Current Biology titled:

“Heightened Neural Reactivity to Threat in Child Victims of Family Violence.”

The research was conducted by scientists associated with University College London (UCL) and the Anna Freud Centre.

The researchers included Eamon J. McCrory, Stéphane A. De Brito, Catherine L. Sebastian, Andrea Mechelli, Geoffrey Bird, Phillip A. Kelly, and Essi Viding.

Their research examined how children exposed to family violence processed emotional signals, particularly signs of anger.

Using functional MRI brain imaging, the scientists identified increased activity in two important brain regions:

The Amygdala

A brain structure involved in processing emotional information, detecting potential threats, and coordinating responses to danger.

The Anterior Insula

A region involved in processing emotional and bodily signals, including experiences associated with threat and distress.

The researchers observed increased activity in these regions when children exposed to family violence viewed angry faces.

Interestingly, the same heightened response was not observed when the children viewed sad faces.

This distinction matters. The findings suggested that the children’s brains were responding particularly strongly to signals associated with potential danger.

In other words, their brains appeared especially sensitive to signs of anger.

43children had their brains scanned with fMRI in the study

4–16%of children are affected by physical abuse, according to estimates cited by the researchers

8–25%of children are affected by intimate partner violence, according to the same estimates

The lead researcher, Dr. Eamon McCrory, stressed that all of the children studied were healthy and none was suffering from a mental health problem. The changes appeared before any diagnosis—which is exactly why the team believes they may be an early warning sign. In McCrory’s words, such changes may be helpful to a child in the short term but may raise the risk of problems later.

Why Scientists Compared These Children to Combat Soldiers

One of the most significant aspects of this research was its comparison with earlier brain-imaging studies involving soldiers exposed to combat.

Previous research had identified increased activity in the amygdala and anterior insula among soldiers who had experienced combat.

The UCL researchers found a similar pattern of heightened activity in children exposed to family violence.

The comparison is striking because the circumstances are so different.

A soldier may experience gunfire, explosions, enemy attacks, and the constant possibility of death while deployed.

A child may experience threats, physical abuse, violence between parents, or an unpredictable home environment.

Yet the brain’s response to signals of potential danger can show similar patterns.

Important Scientific Distinction

Researchers were comparing patterns of neurological activity identified in separate studies. They were not claiming that the children’s brains were identical to those of combat veterans, nor that every child exposed to family conflict develops the same neurological response.

Nevertheless, the findings provide powerful evidence that violence within a family can affect a child’s developing threat-detection system.

What Later Research Has Added

The 2011 study was not the end of the story. The same UCL team later published a follow-up study in the British Journal of Psychiatry comparing 18 maltreated children with 23 children who had not been maltreated. They again found stronger activity in the right amygdala in the maltreated group—this time in response to faces shown too briefly for the children to consciously notice.

A Second Finding

In that follow-up, the level of amygdala activity was linked to how early the abuse began. The younger the child was when the maltreatment started, the stronger the response tended to be for several types of abuse.

A later scientific review by McCrory and colleagues looked across many brain-imaging studies of maltreated children and teenagers. It concluded that these brain differences can appear even without any obvious psychiatric disorder, resemble patterns seen in people who do have such disorders, and can help predict later symptoms. The researchers describe this as a “latent vulnerability”—a hidden risk that can be identified and addressed before a child becomes ill.

When the Brain Learns to Expect Danger

Imagine a child who regularly hears screaming, watches adults threaten one another, witnesses physical confrontations, or lives with the uncertainty of never knowing what will happen next.

For that child, an angry facial expression may not simply be an expression.

It may signal that something dangerous is about to happen.

A raised voice may trigger anxiety. A slammed door may create fear. An argument in another room may cause a child to become immediately alert.

The child may begin watching the expressions, movements, and moods of adults because recognizing danger becomes important to feeling safe.

This is sometimes described as hypervigilance: a heightened state of awareness of possible threats.

The scientific findings suggest that this heightened sensitivity may have a neurological component.

In the short term, being especially alert to danger may help a child recognize threatening situations.

But what happens when that same sensitivity follows the child into classrooms, friendships, relationships, and adulthood?

That is where the long-term implications become particularly concerning.

The Consequences May Follow Children Beyond Their Home

The researchers warned that heightened neural reactivity may represent an adaptation to sustained environmental danger.

However, they also cautioned that this response could become an underlying neurological risk factor associated with later psychological difficulties.

This is an important distinction.

A response that helps a child recognize danger in an unsafe environment may become problematic when that child enters an environment where danger is no longer present.

Consider how this could affect everyday life:

Relationships: A child who grows up around intimidation or explosive arguments may become especially sensitive to anger, disagreement, or perceived rejection.

Education: A child who remains alert to potential danger may find it difficult to concentrate when their attention is occupied by monitoring their surroundings.

Emotional development: Repeated exposure to fear and instability may contribute to difficulties regulating emotions and responding to stressful situations.

Trust: When the people responsible for providing protection are also sources of fear, a child’s understanding of safety and relationships can become complicated.

Not Inevitable

These are possible consequences of childhood adversity, not inevitable outcomes for every child. Children respond differently, and supportive relationships and appropriate intervention can make a meaningful difference.

Toxic Stress: How Fear Gets Under the Skin

The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University uses the term “toxic stress” for stress that is excessive or prolonged. When a child’s stress response stays switched on at high levels for long periods, with no caring adult to help calm it, Harvard’s scientists say it can disrupt the healthy development of brain architecture—especially in areas that handle language, attention and decision-making.

The same research carries a message of hope: supportive, responsive relationships with caring adults can help buffer a child’s stress response, and can help prevent or even reverse the damage. One steady, protective adult can change what the stress does to a child.

A Problem Far Bigger Than One Study

The landmark CDC–Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study surveyed more than 17,000 Southern California adults about abuse, neglect and household dysfunction in their first 18 years. It found that almost two-thirds reported at least one adverse experience, and more than one in five reported three or more.

17.3%of adults in a 2023 CDC report from 25 states reported four or more adverse childhood experiences

The ACE research found a graded “dose-response” relationship: as the number of adverse childhood experiences goes up, so does the risk of poor health and well-being later in life. In short, the more a child is exposed, the greater the toll—which is why early protection matters so much.

Not Every Broken Home Is the Same—and the Science Matters

There is an important distinction that should not be lost in the discussion.

This study did not establish that every child living in a divorced household, a financially struggling household, or a household experiencing ordinary disagreements develops these neurological changes.

The research specifically examined children exposed to family violence, including physical abuse and domestic violence.

An unstable household is not automatically an abusive household.

Parents can separate without subjecting their children to violence. Families can experience financial hardship without creating an environment of fear. Adults can disagree without traumatizing their children.

The concern is sustained exposure to threatening and abusive environments.

That distinction is essential because the purpose of this research is not to condemn families experiencing difficulties. It is to recognize the potential consequences when children are repeatedly exposed to violence and fear.

A Child Should Not Have to Live Like a Soldier in a War Zone

Perhaps the most troubling implication of the research is what it tells us about the importance of a child’s home environment.

Children do not have the ability to simply leave an unsafe household and find somewhere else to live. They depend on adults for protection, food, shelter, emotional support, and stability.

They cannot control whether the adults around them argue, threaten, intimidate, or become violent.

Yet their developing brains may be adapting to those circumstances.

Signs Worth Attention

A child who appears withdrawn, unusually alert, anxious, easily startled, or constantly concerned about the moods of adults may be communicating distress that goes far beyond what can be seen on the surface.

Not every behavioral change indicates abuse, and these signs alone cannot establish what is happening in a household. But they deserve attention rather than dismissal.

The responsibility of adults is not merely to provide a roof over a child’s head. It is to create an environment where that child can develop without constantly anticipating the next threat.

What Parents, Families, and Communities Should Take Away

The research offers an important reminder: children are not simply observers of family conflict.

They are developing human beings whose brains are actively responding to their surroundings.

The emotional climate of a household matters.

The way adults treat one another matters.

The presence of intimidation, violence, and repeated threats matters.

And perhaps most importantly, the absence of physical violence does not necessarily mean a child feels emotionally safe.

Children need consistency, protection, reassurance, and adults who understand that their actions can have consequences extending far beyond a single argument.

Early support, safe environments, and stable relationships can help children recover and develop healthier ways of responding to stress.

Hope

The scientific findings should not be interpreted as a life sentence for children who have experienced trauma. The brain continues developing, and early intervention and supportive relationships offer important opportunities for healing.

The Final Question: What Are We Teaching the Next Generation to Expect From Home?

The 2011 research published in Current Biology provides a sobering scientific perspective on childhood exposure to violence.

Researchers found that children who experienced family violence showed increased activity in brain regions involved in detecting and processing threats—a pattern previously observed in soldiers exposed to combat.

The discovery forces us to consider something that is easy to overlook: a child does not need to be physically struck every day to be affected by an environment filled with danger.

Repeated exposure to violence can influence how a child recognizes threats, processes emotions, and experiences the world around them.

A home should be a place where children learn trust, security, and love.

It should never become a place where their developing brains must learn the skills of survival.

A child deserves to grow up preparing for life—not preparing for the next fight.

Zoanthid corals are soft corals known as colony-forming anemones. These decorative ornamental corals are commonly called 'button polyps', 'sun polyps' or 'zoas'. Species of Zoanthid coral (e.g. Palythoa species and Zoanthus species) can contain a highly toxic, naturally-occurring and potentially lethal substance known as Palytoxin. Zoanthid corals are often recommended to new marine aquarium owners because they are considered to be relatively easy to keep. Health risks associated with keeping soft corals in home aquariums are often unrecognised or underestimated by aquarium enthusiasts and suppliers because there are limited cases documented to raise awareness.","https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTILyL3tDA7bOZgtHpJXk5tsTex-j3pJtVsuD4B0ZYP6YIhIQ0A4XmSfETTDLgsm0E8ULCnsOCYFlg33JM","SA Health","https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/faviconV2?url=https://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au&client=AIM&size=128&type=FAVICON&fallback_opts=TYPE,SIZE,URL",[[1792575457448518,8389652,1897670083],null,null,null,null,[[2,11]]],null,"478d6c34-94aa-455b-853b-28a493dbc56c"]]-->.

What is Zoanthid coral?

Zoanthid corals are soft corals known as colony-forming anemones. These decorative ornamental corals are commonly called ‘button polyps’, ‘sun polyps’ or ‘zoas’.

Health risks associated with keeping soft corals in home aquariums are often unrecognised or underestimated by aquarium enthusiasts and suppliers because there are limited cases documented to raise awareness.

How do you know if a coral is poisonous?

It is not possible to tell which Zoanthid corals contain Palytoxin when deciding whether to keep them in aquariums. While it is possible that people may not intend to buy Zoanthids – it is important to remember that other types of coral or any ‘live rock’ bought from aquarium suppliers may unintentionally contain Zoanthids.

Marine aquarium owners should always presume Palytoxin is present and take appropriate precautions when handling corals to avoid being exposed to this toxin.

Protect yourself and your family

Keep general handling of corals to a minimum.

Do not handle coral with your bare hands. Barrier protection e.g. protective eyewear and gloves should always be worn when coral is handled. Latex gloves break easily when handling sharp rocks so long thick rubber industrial gloves that protect your hands and forearms are recommended.

Always handle coral underwater. Bag the live rock plus water at a distance from aquarium lighting (the warming effect in shallow water can trigger Palytoxin release) while wearing protective equipment and seal the bag before removing from the aquarium,

Monitor aquarium water levels closely to make sure coral surface is completely submerged at all times (particularly with evaporation under aquarium lights)

Avoid any coral maintenance activity that can potentially produce aerosols e.g. breaking, cutting, scrubbing (even with cold water), scraping, brushing and using boiling water or chemicals.

Avoid placing coral under powerful halide lights when out of the water. Halide lights used to sustain and raise new coral colonies can cause heat stress in corals that are out of the water causing rapid release of Palytoxin.

Avoid splashing and contaminating nearby surfaces when changing tank water, and dispose of aquarium water carefully as it can contain Palytoxin.

Remember that Palytoxin can travel some distance in water aerosols.

Be aware that Palytoxin is heat stable – heating does not remove the toxin but it can be deactivated using bleach.

How could you be exposed to palytoxin?

Palytoxin poisoning is relatively rare, with most cases occurring after eating contaminated seafood. Fatalities in these circumstances have been reported.

Exposure to Palytoxin can also occur by direct contact with intact or damaged skin, by direct contact with eyes or by inhaling aerosols or steam vapours associated with aquariums or the natural marine environment.

Zoanthid corals readily proliferate, become overgrown and colonise other corals; forming large, tightly attached colonies that are difficult to thin out. This increases the potential for aquarium enthusiasts to be exposed to Palytoxin.

Most aquarium-related cases occur as a result of skin exposure after prolonged handling through cuts on hands or inhalation of coral dust, steam vapours or water droplets and aerosols while cleaning, separating, growing/propagating, collecting, transporting mechanically removing or eradicating over-growing corals by pouring boiling water on live rock as well as cleaning home marine aquariums.

Symptoms of palytoxin poisoning

Although poisonings are relatively rare it is important to be aware that Palytoxin poses a significant risk to human safety due to its extreme toxicity.

Symptoms can occur and progress rapidly within minutes to hours after handling coral.

Severity depends on how long people have been exposed, the distance they were from the location where coral was being handled, the route of exposure and the presence of cuts or abrasions on hands (Palytoxin can easily pass through a skin wound and reach the bloodstream).

Symptoms include:

Flu-like symptoms such as coughing, fever, chills, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, chest pain, respiratory distress.

Skin symptoms: rash (hives), itching, numbness, dermatitis.

Respiratory symptoms: wheezing, tight chest, shortness of breath, runny nose, fluid in the lungs.

Gastrointestinal symptoms: abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.

Ocular symptoms, conjunctivitis, photophobia, blurred vision, corneal ulceration.

Neurological symptoms: fatigue, dizziness, speech disturbance, bitter metallic taste, tremors, tingling or numbness of extremities.

Muscle symptoms: pain, weakness, cramps, spasms.

Cardiac effects: irregular, slow, fast hear rate, cardiac muscle damage, low or high blood pressure

Severe cases report muscle breakdown, kidney failure, coma and death from cardiac or respiratory failure. There is no specific treatment of antidote for Palytoxin poisoning with medical treatment limited generally to supportive care.

Since this was first reported on by the press and discovered by the public in late 2005, EFF has been at the forefront of the effort to stop it and bring government surveillance programs back within the law and the Constitution.

History of NSA Spying Information since 2005 (See EFF’s full timeline of events here)

News reports in December 2005 first revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been intercepting Americans’ phone calls and Internet communications. Those news reports, combined with a USA Today story in May 2006 and the statements of several members of Congress, revealed that the NSA is also receiving wholesale copies of American’s telephone and other communications records. All of these surveillance activities are in violation of the privacy safeguards established by Congress and the US Constitution.

In early 2006, EFF obtained whistleblower evidence (.pdf) from former AT&T technician Mark Klein showing that AT&T is cooperating with the illegal surveillance. The undisputed documents show that AT&T installed a fiberoptic splitter at its facility at 611 Folsom Street in San Francisco that makes copies of all emails web browsing and other Internet traffic to and from AT&T customers and provides those copies to the NSA. This copying includes both domestic and international Internet activities of AT&T customers. As one expert observed, “this isn’t a wiretap, it’s a country-tap.”

Secret government documents, published by the media in 2013, confirm the NSA obtains full copies of everything that is carried along major domestic fiber optic cable networks. In June 2013, the media, led by the Guardian and Washington Post started publishing a series of articles, along with full government documents, that have confirmed much of what was reported in 2005 and 2006 and then some. The reports showed-and the government later admitted—that the government is mass collecting phone metadata of all US customers under the guise of the Patriot Act. Moreover, the media reports confirm that the government is collecting and analyzing the content of communications of foreigners talking to persons inside the United States, as well as collecting much more, without a probable cause warrant. Finally, the media reports confirm the “upstream” collection off of the fiberoptic cables that Mr. Klein first revealed in 2006.

EFF Fights Back in the Courts

EFF is fighting these illegal activities in the courts. Currently, EFF is representing victims of the illegal surveillance program in Jewel v. NSA, a lawsuit filed in September 2008 seeking to stop the warrantless wiretapping and hold the government and government officials behind the program accountable. In July 2013, a federal judge ruled that the government could not rely on the controversial “state secrets” privilege to block our challenge to the constitutionality of the program. On February 10, 2015, however, the court granted summary judgment to the government on the Plaintiffs’ allegations of Fourth Amendment violations based on the NSA’s copying of Internet traffic from the Internet backbone. The court ruled that the publicly available information did not paint a complete picture of how the NSA collects Internet traffic, so the court could not rule on the program without looking at information that could constitute “state secrets.” The court did not rule that the NSA’s activities are legal, nor did it rule on the other claims in Jewel, and the case will go forward on those claims. This case is being heard in conjunction with Shubert v. Obama, which raises similar claims.

In July, 2013, EFF filed another lawsuit, First Unitarian v. NSA, based on the recently published FISA court order demanding Verizon turn over all customer phone records including who is talking to whom, when and for how long—to the NSA. This so-called “metadata,” especially when collected in bulk and aggregated, allows the government to track the associations of various political and religious organizations. The Director of National Intelligence has since confirmed that the collection of Verizon call records is part of a broader program.

In addition to making the same arguments we made in Jewel, we argue in First Unitarian that this type of collection violates the First Amendment right to association. Previously, in Hepting v. AT&T, EFF filed the first case against a cooperating telecom for violating its customers’ privacy. After Congress expressly intervened and passed the FISA Amendments Act to allow the Executive to require dismissal of the case, Hepting was ultimately dismissed by the US Supreme Court.

In September of 2014, EFF, along with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho, joined the legal team for Anna Smith, an Idaho emergency neonatal nurse, in her challenge of the government’s bulk collection of the telephone records of millions of innocent Americans. In Smith v. Obama, we are arguing the program violated her Fourth Amendment rights by collecting a wealth of detail about her familial, political, professional, religious and intimate associations. In particular, we focus on challenging the applicability of the so-called “third party doctrine,” the idea that people have no expectation of privacy in information they entrust to others.

First Unitarian v. NSA: EFF’s case challenging the NSA’s phone metadata surveillance

Jewel v. NSA: EFF’s case challenging the NSA’s dragnet surveillance

Hepting v. AT&T: EFF’s case that challenged AT&T’s complicity in illegal NSA spying

Smith v. Obama: EFF’s appeal with the ACLU of an Idaho nurse’s challenge to the NSA’s phone metadata surveillance. source

A cooling, homemade cannabis rub can ease everyday aches, and you can make a gallon of it for the price of a few store-bought jars. It won’t get you high, and made the right way, it won’t ruin your clothes.

I started making this rub for sore joints and muscles after long days in the shop and on the ranch. The formula has been through a few rounds of testing: cannabis from the garden, high-proof rubbing alcohol, menthol, and a careful blend of essential oils. Here is the version that works, scaled to a single gallon, with every ingredient that stains left out.

Why each oil is in the blend

Each oil earns its place by cooling, warming, relaxing, reducing inflammation or scenting the rub. Most of these uses come from long tradition and small studies, not large clinical trials. Menthol is the only ingredient here that the FDA recognizes as a topical pain reliever.

Many people find cannabis rubs help arthritis and muscle soreness, but the clinical evidence is still being studied. Cannabinoids applied to skin stay mostly in the skin, which is why a rub doesn’t cause a high.

Part of the relief comes from ingredients with a longer track record. Menthol is the active ingredient in many drugstore pain rubs, and the cooling alcohol and the massage itself help too. Think of this as a comfort rub, not a medicine.

Many people do find it relieving when used regularly it seems to relieve inflammation, which is for many inflammation is a major reason they have pain.

More oil is not better. Keep the total around 2–3% of the batch, or the rub starts to burn.

Left out on purpose: turmeric, patchouli, sandalwood, rose, German chamomile and yarrow oils (they’re blue), and steeped herbs. All of them tint the liquid and can mark fabric. Regular bergamot is left out because it can cause sunburn-like reactions on treated skin.

New to cannabis? Start here

You don’t need any experience to make this. If you can bake cookies and follow a recipe, you can make this rub.

Where to buy it. Go to a licensed dispensary (adults 21 and over in California). Tell the staff you’re making a rub for sore joints. Ask for “shake” or “trim”: smaller leftover pieces that work just as well and cost much less. If you’d rather avoid THC altogether, ask for a high-CBD or 1:1 CBD-to-THC flower.

What you’ll need from your kitchen

A baking sheet and parchment paper

An oven, plus an inexpensive oven thermometer (most ovens run hotter or cooler than the dial says)

A large glass jar or jug with a tight lid

Cheesecloth and coffee filters

A funnel and dark glass bottles

Kitchen gloves, if you have sensitive skin

What “decarb” means

Raw cannabis is mostly in an inactive form called THCA. Gentle heat converts it to the active form, THC, the way toasting bread changes it. This step is called decarboxylating, or “decarb” for short. It doesn’t make the rub intoxicating on your skin. It simply activates more of the plant.

Here’s how to do it:

Heat the oven to 240°F. Check the oven thermometer, because too hot burns off the good compounds.

Break the cannabis into small pieces, about the size of a pea. Your fingers work fine. Don’t grind it to powder.

Spread it in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake for 30–40 minutes. Stir it once halfway through.

Look for the color change. It’s done when it turns from bright green to a light golden brown and feels dry and crumbly.

Let it cool completely before it goes anywhere near alcohol.

About the smell: decarbing smells strong for about an hour. Turn on the stove fan or open a window. Some people use an oven bag or a covered baking dish to keep the smell down.

How to make it

Decarb the cannabis as described above, and let it cool.

Soak it briefly. Put the cooled cannabis in your jar, pour the alcohol over it, close the lid tight, and shake for 3–5 minutes. A short soak keeps the rub light in color.

Strain it. Pour through cheesecloth set in a funnel. Put the same cannabis back in the jar, pour the strained alcohol over it again, and shake another 3–5 minutes. Strain again.

Strain once more through a coffee filter. This takes a little patience, so let gravity do the work.

Dissolve the menthol. Add the menthol crystals and shake until they disappear, about 5 minutes.

Add the essential oils. Measure each one with measuring spoons and shake well. A little cloudiness is normal.

Test it on yourself first. Rub a dime-sized spot on the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. If there’s no redness or itching, it’s ready to use.

Bottle and label it. Use a funnel to fill dark glass bottles. Write “EXTERNAL USE ONLY – FLAMMABLE” and the date on every bottle.

To use it: rub a small amount (about a teaspoon) into the sore area until it dries. Use it up to 3–4 times a day. Expect a cool tingle first, then gentle warmth.

Optional, for experienced makers: cannabis concentrate (wax) can be added for extra strength. Decarb 10–15 g in a small glass dish at 250°F for 30–45 minutes, until it stops bubbling. Let it cool, then rinse it out with some of the alcohol. Beginners can skip this; the flower alone works well.

Keeping it off your good clothes

The alcohol evaporates in minutes, but the oils and plant resin stay behind and can spot wool and silk.

Let it dry fully, at least 15 minutes, before you get dressed. Applying at night is best.

Wash your hands afterward so you don’t carry it to cuffs, collars or ties.

Keep the wet rub off fabric. High-proof alcohol can loosen some dyes.

If it does get on a garment, blot it rather than rubbing, and tell your dry cleaner it’s an oil and alcohol stain.

Storage and safety

Store it in a cool, dark cabinet with the caps tight, where it keeps 1–2 years. Skip the fridge: cold makes menthol crystallize, and fridges aren’t built for flammable vapors.

Never heat the alcohol over a flame or in an oven. The vapors ignite easily.

Isopropyl is poisonous to drink. Label every bottle and keep it away from children.

Keep it off the face, eyes, mucous membranes and broken skin.

Pets: cats are especially sensitive to essential oils, including the fumes.

Pregnancy or seizure disorders: rosemary, eucalyptus and clary sage aren’t advised.

If it starts to sting more than it used to, the oils have aged. Make a fresh batch.

THIS CANNABIS RUB IS INTENDED FOR EXTERNAL APPLICATION TO THE SKIN ONLY. NEVER EAT IT, DRINK IT, SMOKE IT, OR USE IT FOR THE PURPOSE OF BECOMING INTOXICATED.

As Christians, we are called to remain sober-minded, alert, self-controlled, and obedient to God. Deliberately pursuing intoxication, becoming drunk or high, and surrendering our judgment and self-control to a substance are contrary to these biblical principles.

The Bible commands us in Ephesians 5:18:

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)

First Peter 5:8 also instructs believers to be sober and vigilant. These principles remind us that our minds and bodies should be governed by wisdom, discipline, and the desire to honor God.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS RUB IS TOPICAL USE FOR SORE MUSCLES AND JOINTS — NOT INTOXICATION OR RECREATIONAL DRUG USE. This article does not endorse getting high, impairing one’s judgment, or using substances to escape responsibility.

CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: This formula contains isopropyl rubbing alcohol, which is poisonous if swallowed, and is flammable. Keep it away from flames, children, and pets. Apply only to appropriate, intact skin and avoid the eyes, face, mucous membranes, and broken skin. Do not ingest the mixture under any circumstances.

Biblical Sobriety: More Than Just Avoiding Alcohol

The strongest biblical foundation for your message is that being sober-minded is a Christian duty involving the entire life of the mind: clear judgment, self-control, spiritual alertness, disciplined thinking, prayer, and resistance to temptation. Alcohol is one concern, but it is not the whole subject.

I also read the article you linked, Daily His Disciple, “16 Bible Verses for a Sober Mind (KJV)”. Its central message is that Christians cultivate a sober mind by renewing their thoughts through Scripture, rejecting false thinking, developing Christlike character, and remaining spiritually vigilant.

1. The Bible teaches sobriety as a way of life

Here are the most relevant passages to expand your article’s Christian message.

Titus 2:11–12 — Live soberly, righteously, and godly.

1 Peter 5:8 — Be sober and vigilant.

1 Corinthians 6:12 — Do not be brought under the power of anything.

1 Peter 5:8 — Be sober and vigilant

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Sobriety is connected to watchfulness. Christians are instructed to remain alert to spiritual danger rather than become careless, distracted, or vulnerable to temptation.

1 Peter 4:7 — Clear-mindedness for prayer

“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.”

The verse connects sobriety with prayer, sound judgment, and spiritual preparation. The concern is not merely what someone drinks; it is whether the person is living with the discipline and clarity needed to seek God.

Romans 12:2 — Renewing the mind

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

Christians are called to examine what shapes their thinking. This includes the habits, entertainment, influences, and desires that can pull a person away from God’s will.

2 Corinthians 10:5 — Bringing thoughts under Christ’s authority

“…bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

A disciplined Christian mind does not simply follow every impulse. It tests thoughts and desires against the teachings of Christ.

Philippians 4:8 — Guarding what occupies the mind

“…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Sobriety also involves the quality of our thinking: what we dwell on, what we accept as true, and what we allow to influence our hearts.

1 Thessalonians 5:6–8 — Awake, alert, and self-controlled

Paul contrasts spiritual wakefulness with drunkenness and calls believers to live with faith, love, and the hope of salvation. The broader lesson is to remain spiritually prepared instead of becoming careless or asleep to one’s responsibilities.

Titus 2:11–12 — Sober living and self-control

Paul teaches that God’s grace trains believers to reject ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present world. Sobriety belongs to a larger pattern of Christian conduct, not merely a warning about alcohol.

2. The verse that may be most important for your message

Titus 2:11–12 is especially powerful because it connects God’s grace with rejecting ungodliness and living soberly.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” — Titus 2:11–12 (KJV)

This goes beyond the question of alcohol. It teaches that Christians should exercise self-control, resist ungodly desires, and live in a manner that honors God.

Other important passages include:

1 Corinthians 6:12 — “I will not be brought under the power of any.” A principle of freedom from enslavement to habits or desires.

Galatians 5:22–23 — The fruit of the Spirit includes temperance, commonly understood as self-control.

Proverbs 25:28 — A person without self-control is compared to a city whose walls are broken down.

2 Timothy 1:7 — God gives a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

Mark 5:15 — The formerly afflicted man is described as sitting, clothed, and “in his right mind.”

Together, these passages support a broad Christian teaching about clear thinking, mastery over impulses, and spiritual discipline.

3. How this applies to cannabis and your topical-rub article

I recommend making the distinction between using a product for a physical purpose and seeking intoxication explicit.

There is an important nuance: the Bible does not specifically discuss modern cannabis products, and topical cannabis preparations are not necessarily intoxicating. Whether a particular product is safe or produces impairment depends on its ingredients, formulation, and how it is used. So your Christian position can be stated firmly without suggesting that every cannabis preparation automatically causes intoxication.

The City of Santa Clarita leases dozens of AI-powered Flock Safety license plate readers that photograph every vehicle that passes, build a searchable “fingerprint” of your car, and log where you have been — at locations the Sheriff’s Station refuses to disclose. Volunteers mapped them anyway.
You didn’t consent to this. You were never asked. But if you drove to church on Sunday, to the pharmacy on Tuesday, or to a friend’s house on Friday night, there is a very good chance a camera bolted to a pole somewhere in Santa Clarita photographed your car, read your plate, logged the time and place, and filed it in a private company’s database where any deputy with a login can search it — no warrant, no judge, no suspicion required.

The cameras are made by Flock Safety, a venture-backed Atlanta company that has become the largest seller of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) in the United States. In November 2024, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a two-year lease of 35 Flock cameras for roughly $261,250, with renewals allowed up to $511,250, to be operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley station. By March 2025 the station said all 35 were installed. Where? The station told the local paper it would rather not say, citing the safety of the cameras.

The Sheriff’s Station may not publish a list, but the cameras stand on public right-of-way in plain view, and a nationwide volunteer effort called DeFlock has been documenting them one by one into OpenStreetMap. This map pulls that data live every time the page loads. Red dots are Flock Safety cameras; gold dots are other or unlabeled license plate readers. The faint wedge shows which direction the lens faces. Click any dot for details. Type your ZIP code or street address to see every reader near your home, your church, or your child’s school.

Flock Cameras: A Warrantless Dragnet on Every Road

Flock Safety license plate readers photograph every car that passes — plate, make, color, bumper stickers, dents — and store where you were and when in a private database that police search with no warrant, no judge, and no suspicion. Santa Clarita leases 35 of them and won’t say where they are. Volunteers mapped them anyway.

Fourth Amendment. A permanent, searchable log of everyone’s movements is a search. The Supreme Court said so for cell-phone location data in Carpenter (2018) and again in Chatrie (2026). A camera on every chokepoint is the same dragnet on a pole.

Fourteenth Amendment. No notice, no hearing, no vote — the public was never told where the cameras are. And a tool any logged-in user can point at any group, with no judge in between, is not equal protection of the laws.

Look at where they sit. Not scattered at random — at the chokepoints. The freeway approaches. The arterials every neighborhood drains into. The parking lot exits. As of this writing the community data shows 67 license plate readers inside Santa Clarita — 34 tagged as Flock Safety hardware and 33 from other vendors or not yet identified — every one of them with a recorded facing direction. That is nearly double the 35 the city leased, which tells you the city contract is only part of the picture: homeowners associations, shopping centers, and other agencies are running their own. If you leave your neighborhood the same way each morning, you are passing the same camera every day. That is not a tool for finding a stolen car. That is a net.

What is a Flock camera, and what does it actually record?

A Flock Safety camera is a solar-powered, cellular-connected license plate reader, usually mounted on a black pole or an existing traffic signal, aimed at the rear plates of passing cars. Flock’s marketing says its cameras “just read license plates.” The City of Santa Clarita’s own staff report says otherwise. The cameras, in the city’s words, employ machine learning and artificial intelligence to capture vehicle characteristics beyond the plate — color, make, body type, roof racks, bumper stickers, dents — so that a vehicle can be searched for even when no plate number is known. Flock calls this a “Vehicle Fingerprint.” A single camera can process up to 30,000 vehicles a day.

Every one of those 30,000 captures is a record of an innocent person going about their life. The camera does not know or care whether you are a fugitive or a grandmother. It records everyone and sorts it out later — which is to say, it records everyone and keeps it. Once uploaded, the data lives on Flock’s servers, and any officer with credentials can search it — and, depending on the sharing settings the agency chooses, so can hundreds of other agencies around the country through Flock’s national network.

Why we believe Flock cameras violate the Fourth Amendment

The Fourth Amendment guarantees “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” For most of American history the government could not follow you everywhere you went because doing so was expensive: it took a deputy, a car, and a lot of coffee. That cost was itself a protection. Flock cameras erase it. For a few thousand dollars a pole, the government now follows everyone, everywhere, all the time, and stores the result.

The Supreme Court has already recognized this danger. In Carpenter v. United States (2018) it held that the government needs a warrant to obtain historical cell phone location records, because a record of “the whole of a person’s movements” reveals their “familial, political, professional, religious, and sexual associations.” This summer, in Chatrie v. United States, the Court went further, holding by a 6–3 vote that pulling a person’s location data is a search even when investigators only take a narrow slice of a much larger database — the exact argument cities have used to defend their camera networks.

We will be honest about the state of the law, because our readers deserve it. In January 2026, a federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia ruled that that city’s network of 176 Flock cameras did not yet violate the Fourth Amendment, because with 21-day retention and gaps in coverage it did not capture the “whole” of a person’s movements. The same judge warned in the same opinion that ALPR surveillance could cross the line “at some point.” In that case, the city’s own data showed the two plaintiffs’ cars — two ordinary people, no warrant, no charges — had been photographed hundreds of times in four months. The plaintiffs have appealed to the Fourth Circuit, and the Institute for Justice has filed a similar Fourth Amendment suit against San Jose, right here in California.

“Not today,” the judge wrote. We say: what is the number, then? How many cameras, how many days of retention, before a free people are entitled to say the government may not build a searchable record of where every one of us has been?

Santa Clarita has already decided the answer for us, without asking. We believe the courts will eventually catch up to what common sense already knows: a permanent, warrantless, city-wide log of the movements of every innocent driver is an unreasonable search, whether the judge in Norfolk is ready to say so or not.

The Fourteenth Amendment: due process and equal protection

The Fourteenth Amendment promises that no state shall deprive any person of liberty without due process of law, nor deny any person the equal protection of the laws. Both promises are broken here.

No notice, no hearing, no vote

Due process starts with notice. Santa Clarita installed a surveillance network on public streets and refused to tell the public where it is. There was no hearing on whether residents wanted to be tracked, no public vote, no meaningful opportunity to object — only a line item on a council agenda approved after “some debate.” The city cannot deprive you of the liberty to move about anonymously in your own town and then deny you even the information needed to understand what was taken.

A dragnet that falls on whoever the person at the keyboard chooses

Equal protection is the promise that the law falls on everyone alike. But a camera network at neighborhood chokepoints does not fall on everyone alike; it falls hardest on whoever the person at the keyboard decides to look for. Around the country, Flock data has been used to track a woman across state lines over an abortion and to feed federal immigration enforcement — in Mountain View, California, city officials discovered federal and state agencies had searched their cameras without consent. That revelation is why Santa Clara County voted in February 2026 to drop Flock entirely, why Los Altos Hills pulled its cameras down in January, and why by one count more than 90 cities nationwide have rejected or canceled Flock contracts. When a tool can be pointed at any group by any logged-in user with no judge in between, “equal protection” becomes whatever the person searching decides it is.

California’s Constitution says privacy is inalienable — and Sacramento did nothing

California’s own Constitution goes further than the federal one: Article I, Section 1 names privacy as an inalienable right of every Californian. And yet, as CalMatters reported this week, the Legislature has now failed for the fifth straight year to pass meaningful regulation of these cameras; this year’s bill, SB 1013, died without a vote. The people who could set the limits have declined to. That leaves it to cities — and to us.

The 1984 surveillance state, built one pole at a time

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is usually invoked lazily. We invoke it precisely. Orwell’s insight was not that the telescreen was always watching; it was that no one could ever be sure whether it was, and so everyone behaved as if it were. That is the effect of a camera network whose locations are secret and whose data is searchable at will. You do not have to be guilty of anything to change where you drive, whom you visit, which meeting you attend, which church or clinic or lawyer’s office you pull into. You only have to know that someone could look.

A community of free people does not have to accept this. We are told the cameras help deputies with staffing shortages; we are told they find stolen cars. Perhaps. Every surveillance state in history has been able to point to a criminal it caught. The question a constitutional republic asks is different: what does it cost the innocent, and who gets to decide? In Santa Clarita, so far, the answer to the second question has been “not you.”

What Santa Clarita residents can do about Flock cameras

Speak at City Council. The Flock lease is a two-year contract with renewal options. Renewal is a vote. Show up, put your name on the record, and ask each councilmember whether they will vote to renew warrantless tracking of their own constituents.

Demand the audit logs. California’s ALPR statute (Civil Code §1798.90.5 et seq.) requires every ALPR operator to maintain a usage and privacy policy and to log who accessed the data and why. File a California Public Records Act request with the City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Sheriff’s Station for the Flock usage policy, the search/access logs, and every outside agency the data has been shared with.

Map the cameras. If there is a reader on your street that isn’t on the map above, photograph it and add it at deflock.org. Secrecy is the program’s first defense; a complete public map takes it away.

Ask your HOA and your shopping center. Nearly half the readers mapped in this city are not the city’s. Ask who owns the one at your gate, what it keeps, and who can search it.

Sign, and tell your neighbors. Resident petitions to remove the cameras — including “Remove Flock Cameras from Santa Clarita” and “DeFlock SCV” — are circulating. Signatures alone won’t do it, but they tell the council which way the wind is blowing.

Frequently asked questions about Flock cameras in Santa Clarita

<details open="open">

Are there Flock cameras in Santa Clarita?

Yes. The City of Santa Clarita approved a lease of 35 Flock Safety automated license plate readers in November 2024, operated by the LASD Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, and confirmed all 35 were installed by March 2025. Volunteers have mapped 67 license plate readers in the city in total, including cameras operated by HOAs, businesses, and other agencies.

Where are the Flock cameras located in Santa Clarita?

The city and the Sheriff’s Station have declined to publish locations. The live map on this page shows every reader that volunteers have documented in OpenStreetMap, clustered at freeway approaches, major intersections, neighborhood entrances, and shopping-center exits. Search your ZIP code or address in the map to see the readers nearest you.

</details>
<details open="open">

What does a Flock camera look like?

Typically a small black or gray rectangular camera on top of a slender black pole with a solar panel, or bolted to an existing traffic signal or light pole, angled down toward the road to photograph rear license plates.

</details>
<details open="open">

What information does a Flock camera collect?

According to the City of Santa Clarita’s own staff report, the cameras use machine learning and AI to capture the license plate plus vehicle characteristics such as make, color, body type, roof racks, bumper stickers, and damage — what Flock calls a “Vehicle Fingerprint” — along with the time, date, location, and direction of travel. Each camera can process up to 30,000 vehicles per day.

</details>
<details open="open">

Do police need a warrant to search Flock camera data?

No. Under current practice, deputies with credentials can search the database without a warrant. Whether that violates the Fourth Amendment is being litigated: a federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia ruled in January 2026 that Norfolk’s network did not yet cross the line but warned it could; that ruling is on appeal, and the Supreme Court’s June 2026 decision in Chatrie v. United States strengthened the argument that warrantless location tracking is a search.

</details>
<details open="open">

Can other agencies, or the federal government, see Santa Clarita’s Flock data?

Flock allows each agency to share its data with other Flock customers, and the network has been searched by outside and federal agencies in other California cities — Mountain View found federal and state agencies had accessed its cameras without consent. Whether and with whom Santa Clarita shares its data is exactly what a Public Records Act request for the Flock audit logs would reveal.

</details>
<details open="open">

How much do Flock cameras cost Santa Clarita taxpayers?

About $261,250 for the initial two-year lease of 35 cameras, with total contract costs not to exceed $511,250 if renewed.

</details>
<details open="open">

Are Flock cameras legal in California?

California has no law banning ALPRs. Civil Code §1798.90.5 et seq. requires operators to have a usage and privacy policy and keep access logs, and Article I, Section 1 of the California Constitution declares privacy an inalienable right. The Legislature has failed five years running to pass stricter regulation, most recently letting SB 1013 die in 2026.

A new book investigating the maths in The Simpsons has revealed something ridiculously awesome and completely unexpected – in the 1998 episode “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace”, Homer comes up with a mathematical equation that predicts the mass of the Higgs boson more than a decade before physicists at CERN discovered it.

Why, you ask? Well if you don’t remember the episode, Homer suddenly becomes an inventor, coming up with such devices as an electric hammer and a make-up gun. In the process, he unleashes his hidden mathematical ability, predicting the mass of the Higgs boson to be 775 giga-electron-volts (GeV). British science writer and author of The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets, Simon Singh, says in the scheme of things, that figure isn’t actually that far off the 125 GeV estimate that was the result of the CERN Higgs boson discovery in 2012.

“If you work it out, you get the mass of a Higgs boson that’s only a bit larger than the nano-mass of [what] a Higgs boson actually is,” Singh told Nick Clark at The Independent. “It’s kind of amazing as Homer makes this prediction 14 years before it was discovered.”

Turns out a lot of the writers on The Simpsons are mathematicians, Singh telling The Independent that it’s “the most mathematical TV show on prime-time television in history.” The mathematician who happened to write that formula for Homer is David X. Cohen, who went on to be the head writer and executive producer of Futurama. According to Richard Gray at The Daily Mail, Cohen contacted one of his high school friends, David Schiminovich, who is an astronomer at Columbia University, and worked with him on the equation.

The Simpsons has ended up being a real treasure trove of fascinating little tidbits for scientists to mull over. Just last month, astronomer Phil Plait made the rather unsettling discovery that Springfield might just be set in the Southern Hemisphere, thanks to THIS MOON. And late last year, the most mathematical show on prime-time television, plus someone called ‘Kim Jong Fun’, helped prove the very important point that some journals will publish literally anything. How lucky are we to have had Homer and co. in our lives for almost 30 years?

Key Predictions That Came True:

Digital Currencies: The authors anticipated the rise of private, decentralized forms of money that would bypass governments — remarkably similar to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Decline of Nation-States: They predicted that as wealth and information moved online, traditional governments would lose control over money, taxation, and citizens who could operate globally through digital systems.

Cybercrime & Cyber Warfare: They foresaw new forms of conflict in cyberspace, where power would shift from physical to digital battlegrounds.

Remote Work & Digital Nomadism: The authors envisioned a future where highly skilled individuals could live and work anywhere, leveraging technology to achieve independence from centralized systems.

Wealth Disparity & Political Polarization: They warned that technology would create new elites — “sovereign individuals” — while destabilizing traditional economic and political structures.

Another 1997 warning came from Wired magazine’s July 1997 cover story, which predicted enormous technological progress but also flagged potential crises that could derail it — including pandemics, climate change, and soaring energy costs.

Together, these 1997 insights painted a surprisingly accurate picture of the 21st century — an age of digital power, decentralization, and disruption that defines our world today.

Hydrogen-powered cars. Biological, then quantum computing. Gene-therapy cancer treatments. An end to the War on Drugs. Reliable automatic translation. The impending end of the nation-state. Man setting foot on Mars. These are just a few of the developments in store for our world by the year 2020 — or so, at any rate, predicts “The Long Boom,” the cover story of a 1997 issue of Wired magazine, the official organ of 1990s techno-optimism. “We’re facing 25 years of prosperity, freedom, and a better environment for the whole world,” declares the cover itself. “You got a problem with that?”

Since the actual year 2020, this image has been smirkingly re-circulated as a prime example of blinkered End-of-History triumphalism. From the vantage of 2021, it’s fair to say that the predictions of the article’s authors Peter Schwartz and Peter Leyden (who expanded their thesis into a 2000 book) went wide of the mark.

But their vision of the 21st century hasn’t proven risible in every aspect: a rising China, hybrid cars, video calls, and online grocery-shopping have become familiar enough hardly to merit comment, as has the internet’s status as “the main medium of the 21st century.” And who among us would describe the cost of university as anything but “absurd”?

Schwartz and Leyden do allow for darker possibilities than their things-can-only-get-better rhetoric make it seem. Some of these they enumerate in a sidebar (remember sidebars?) headlined “Ten Scenario Spoilers.” Though not included in the article as archived on Wired’s web site, it has recently been scanned and posted to social media, with viral results. A “new Cold War” between the U.S. and China; a “global climate change that, among other things, disrupts the food supply”; a “major rise in crime and terrorism forces the world to pull back in fear”; an “uncontrollable plague — a modern-day influenza epidemic or its equivalent”: to one degree or another, every single one of these ten dire developments seems in our time to have come to pass.

“We’re still on the front edge of the great global boom,” we’re reminded in the piece’s conclusion. “A hell of a lot of things could go wrong.” You don’t say. Yet for all of the 21st-century troubles that few riding the wave of first-dot-com-boom utopianism would have credited, we today run the risk of seeing our world as too dystopian. Now as then, “the vast array of problems to solve and the sheer magnitude of the changes that need to take place are enough to make any global organization give up, any nation back down, any reasonable person curl up in a ball.” We could use a fresh infusion of what Schwartz and Leyden frame as the boom’s key ingredient: American optimism. “Americans don’t understand limits. They have boundless confidence in their ability to solve problems. And they have an amazing capacity to think they really can change the world.” In that particular sense, perhaps we all should become Americans after all.

PATRIOT Act Author: The NSA Is Actively Violating The Law

Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), the author of the original USA PATRIOT Act, disagrees.

In a amicus brief filed in support of the American Civil Liberties Union’s lawsuit against the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of U.S. phone records, Sensenbrenner argues that the government has gone far beyond what the legislation authorizes.

Section 215, known as the business records provision, authorizes intelligence agencies to apply for information if “the records are relevant to an ongoing foreign intelligence investigation.”

In practice, the NSA uses section 215 to collect data pertaining to every phone call to, from, and within the U.S. in the name of combating terrorism.

Sensenbrenner and the other members of Congress who enacted Section 215 “did not intend to authorize the program at issue in this lawsuit or any program of a comparable scope,” according to the brief.

The brief goes on to propose this question (emphasis ours):

The NSA is gathering on a daily basis the details of every call that every American makes, as well as every call made by foreigners to or from the United States. How can every call that every American makes or receives be relevant to a specific investigation?“

Filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the brief notes that Sensenbrenner “was not aware of the full scope of the program when he voted to reauthorize Section 215” and would have voted against it if he had known.

In Sensenbrenner’s words: “The suggestion that the administration can violate the law because Congress failed to object is outrageous. But let them be on notice: I am objecting right now.” source

Further evidence supports controversial claim that SARS-CoV-2 genes can integrate with human DNA

After being challenged, research team provides more data to back its controversial hypothesis but the relevance to human health is unclear

Science‘s COVID-19 reporting is supported by the Heising-Simons Foundation.

A team of prominent scientists has doubled down on its controversial hypothesis that genetic bits of the pandemic coronavirus can integrate into our chromosomes and stick around long after the infection is over. If they are right—skeptics have argued that their results are likely lab artifacts—the insertions could explain the rare finding that people can recover from COVID-19 but then test positive for SARS-CoV-2 again months later.

Stem cell biologist Rudolf Jaenisch and gene regulation specialist Richard Young of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who led the work, triggered a Twitter storm in December 2020, when their team first presented the idea in a preprint on bioRxiv. The researchers emphasized that viral integration did not mean people who recovered from COVID-19 remain infectious. But critics charged them with stoking unfounded fears that COVID-19 vaccines based on messenger RNA (mRNA) might somehow alter human DNA. (Janesich and Young stress that their results, both original and new, in no way imply that those vaccines integrate their sequences into our DNA.)

Researchers also presented a brace of scientific criticisms, some of which the team addresses in a paper released online today by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). “We now have unambiguous evidence that coronavirus sequences can integrate into the genome,” Jaenisch says.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has genes composed of RNA, and Jaenisch, Young, and co-authors contend that on rare occasions an enzyme in human cells may copy the viral sequences into DNA and slip them into our chromosomes. The enzyme, reverse transcriptase, is encoded by LINE-1 elements, sequences that litter 17% of the human genome and represent artifacts of ancient infections by retroviruses. In their original preprint, the researchers presented test tube evidence that when human cells spiked with extra LINE-1 elements were infected with the coronavirus, DNA versions of SARS-CoV-2’s sequences nestled into the cells’ chromosomes.

Many researchers who specialize in LINE-1 elements and other “retrotransposons” thought the data were too thin to support the claim. “If I would have had this data, I would have not submitted to any publication at that point,” says Cornell University’s Cedric Feschotte, who studies endogenous retrovirus chunks in the human genome. He and others also said they expected higher quality work coming from scientists of the caliber of Jaenisch and Young. In two subsequent studies, both posted on bioRxiv, critics presented evidence that the supposed chimeras of human and viral DNA traces are routinely created by the very technique the group used to scan for them in chromosomes. As one report concluded, the human-virus sequences “are more likely to be a methodological product, [sic] than the result of genuine reverse transcription, integration and expression.”

In their new paper, Jaenisch, Young, and colleagues acknowledge that the technique they used accidentally creates human-viral chimeras. “I think it’s a valid point,” Jaenisch says. He adds that when they first submitted the paper to a journal, they knew it needed stronger data, which they hoped to add during the review process. But the journal, like many, requires authors to immediately post all COVID-19 results to a preprint server. “I probably should have said screw you, I won’t put it on bioRxiv. It was a misjudgment,” Jaenisch says.

In the new PNAS paper, the team provides evidence that artifacts alone can’t explain the detected levels of virus-human chimeric DNA. The scientists also show that portions of LINE-1 elements flank the integrated viral genetic sequence, further supporting their hypothesis. And they have collaborated with one of the original skeptics, Stephen Hughes of the National Cancer Institute, who suggested an experiment to clarify whether the integration was real or noise, based on the orientation of the integrated viral sequences relative to the human ones. The results support the original hypothesis, says Hughes, a co-author of the new paper. “That analysis has turned out to be important,” he says.

“The integration data in cell culture is much more convincing than what was presented in the preprint, but it’s still not totally clean,” says Feschotte, who now calls Jaenisch’s and Young’s hypothesis “plausible.” (SARS-CoV-2, he notes, can also persist in a person for months without integrating its genes.)

The real question is whether the cell culture data have any relevance to human health or diagnostics. “In the absence of evidence of integration in patients, the most I can take away from these data is that it is possible to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA retroposition events in infected cell lines where L1 is overexpressed,” Feschotte says. “The clinical or biological significance of these observations, if any, is a matter of pure speculation at this point.”

Jaenisch’s and Young’s team do report hints of SARS-CoV-2 integration in tissue from living and autopsied COVID-19 patients. Specifically, the researchers found high levels of a type of RNA that is only produced by integrated viral DNA as the cell reads its sequence to make proteins. But, Young acknowledges, “We do not have direct evidence for that yet.”

Harmit Malik, a specialist in ancient viruses in the human genome at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, says it’s a “legitimate question” to ask why people who should have cleared the virus sometimes have positive polymerase chain Reaction tests for its sequences. But he also remains unconvinced that the explanation is integrated virus. “Under normal circumstances, there is so little reverse transcription machinery available” in human cells, Malik says.

The controversy has grown decidedly more civil since December. Both Young and Jaenisch say they received more intense criticism for their preprint than any studies in their careers, in part because some researchers worried it played into the hands of vaccine skeptics spreading false claims about the newly authorized mRNA vaccines. “If there ever was a preprint that should be deleted, it is this one! It was irresponsible to even put it up as a preprint, considering the complete lack of relevant evidence. This is now being used by some to spread doubts about the new vaccines,” Marie-Louise Hammarskjöld, a microbiologist at the University of Virginia, posted in a comment on bioRxiv at the time.

And what of the original journal submission? “They rejected it,” Jaenisch says. source

A Rock Formation That Challenges Millions of Years

When people are told that the earth’s rock layers represent millions of years of slow and steady processes, most simply accept it without question. After all, it’s what the textbooks say. But sometimes nature itself speaks louder than any textbook. One photo of a common geological feature is enough to raise serious doubts about the standard story of “deep time.”

The photo shows horizontal layers of sedimentary rock with a vertical seam cutting directly through them. Evolutionary geologists insist that these layers were laid down slowly, hardened into stone, and then—millions of years later—molten rock pushed upward, creating the vertical seam. But here’s the problem: if those layers had really been hard rock for millions of years, the intrusion should have shattered them. Instead, the seam slices neatly through, as if the layers were still soft when it happened.

This observation fits perfectly with the biblical account of Noah’s Flood. The Flood was not a tranquil rise of water, but a catastrophic, worldwide event that deposited vast amounts of sediment in a very short time. These layers would have built up quickly, not over millions of years, and while still water-saturated and pliable, molten material intruded and cooled into the vertical feature we see today. What evolutionary geologists interpret as “slow and gradual over eons” can be better explained as “rapid and catastrophic during the year-long Flood.”

And here lies the real issue: evolution cannot survive without millions and billions of years. Darwin’s theory requires deep time as its foundation. Without it, the supposed slow accumulation of changes, mutations, and adaptations has no stage to play on. If the rocks themselves testify not to endless ages but to rapid catastrophe, then the time needed for evolution simply evaporates.

In other words, this photo doesn’t just challenge a detail of geology—it strikes at the very heart of the evolutionary story. The Bible tells us in 2 Peter 3:3–6 that in the last days people would deliberately forget the reality of God’s creation and the judgment of the Flood. What we see in the rocks is exactly what Scripture has told us all along: God created, God judged, and His Word can be trusted.

The evidence is right before our eyes. Layers formed quickly. Intrusions cut cleanly. Catastrophe, not deep time, shaped the earth. The question is not whether the Bible can be trusted—it is whether we will trust the Bible or the ever-changing opinions of man.
