THE CHRISTIAN CALL TO SOBRIETY GOES FAR BEYOND ALCOHOL. GOD CALLS US TO BE SOBER-MINDED, SELF-CONTROLLED, SPIRITUALLY ALERT, AND FREE FROM THE DOMINION OF UNGODLY DESIRES.

The Bible repeatedly teaches that Christians must guard their minds, exercise self-control, and remain vigilant in their walk with the Lord. Although Scripture explicitly condemns drunkenness, its teaching about sober-mindedness extends to our thoughts, conduct, spiritual awareness, and the things that may gain control over our lives.

First Peter 5:8 commands believers to “be sober” and “be vigilant.” First Peter 4:7 connects sobriety with prayer. Titus 2:11–12 teaches that God’s grace trains us to reject ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly.

These are not merely warnings about alcohol. They are instructions for Christian living.

Do Not Become a Slave to Any Substance

In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul declares, “I will not be brought under the power of any.”

Christians should carefully examine whether a substance or habit is controlling their decisions, weakening their self-discipline, or drawing them away from their responsibilities to God and others. Galatians 5:22–23 identifies temperance, or self-control, as a fruit of the Spirit.

Keep Your Mind Clear and Your Heart Focused on God

Philippians 4:8 instructs believers to direct their thoughts toward what is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. Romans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

A Christian should not deliberately seek to surrender sound judgment or become intoxicated for pleasure or escape. Our desire should be to honor God with our minds, our bodies, and our conduct.
