During a 10:30 a.m. news conference, CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said Cano appeared to have lost consciousness before the crash.

Cano apparently told his fellow officer he wasn’t feeling well prior to the crash, Duryee said.

The person being detained, who has not been identified, was in possession of drugs and an illegal handgun at the time of their arrest.

“The subject we did have under arrest did have drugs in their possession. We do not think this was an exposure to drugs. The other officer and the subject did not experience any signs or symptoms related to that,” Duryee said.

“We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cano, who gave his life while serving the people of California,” CHP Commissioner Duryee said. “His dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with his family and our CHP family during this incredibly difficult time.”
